SS United States
The majestic ocean liner, built in 1951, carried celebrities and former U.S. Presidents, and still holds the record for the fastest ocean liner ever to cross the Atlantic.

Great images! I watched as they brought her into Philly in 1996, first under the Walt Whitman Bridge and later she was moved to the pier she's at. I was lucky enough to spend a day onboard her in 1998 with her one of her former engineers. Couldn't believe she was in my city and am still shocked she is still there after 27 years!! No matter how much cosmetic decay, she is still beautiful.

Sadly, I think the SS United States has become a lesson in why preserving a ship is not the best way to preserve the history of a ship. The SS United States has now spent decades as a sad, decaying hulk, but during my childhood she was vibrant and proud in the photos I recall. Had she been scrapped when she reached her reasonable end of life, she would have been forever young. Now she will most likely be forever derelict instead.

I sadly see this ship eventually either getting towed to sea and scuttled or scrapped. I remember a few stories of parties being interested in her and wanting to make her a museum ship/floating hotel similar to Queen Mary. But the reoccurring issue seems to be money. From what I've been able to tell. this ship is just a hull. All the exterior is there and doesn't seem to need to much more then a coat of paint. But the interior seems to have been completely stripped out of her and it seems nobody, even other cruise lines want to throw in the money it's going to take to restore the ship.

@americanrambler4972 2 года назад
She has been pretty much gutted. Very little in the way of combustibles left on board to burn or be used to start a fire. But, she can still catch or be set on fire. Just not very easily. There are always things like residual paints, oils and remaining furnishings scattered around which may burn. However, if she does catch fire, she has very little if any capability or equipment left on board to contain or control the fire.
@johnjerman3421
@johnjerman3421 2 года назад
@@americanrambler4972 actually if you do the research you would find it never had any combustibles to start with - every item was designed to be "fireproof" & or contained "asbestos" which already has been removed & all other hazardous materials have long been removed
@americanrambler4972
@americanrambler4972 2 года назад
@@johnjerman3421 I have done a reasonable amount of research on the ship and it’s current state and condition. The original advertisements claim the only wooden thing on the ship was the galley butcher block. But there is no such thing as a fire proof ship. Unless it has sunk. At best you can only call it fire resistant. The ship has deteriorated markedly in the last 10 years. Her biggest preservation benefit has been the location she is moored in. She is not sitting in salt water, but brackish water with a much lower salt content, so corrosion has been much slower. And her aluminum superstructure has also been a great help in preservation. But there has been very minimal if any maintenance on this ship in a number of years. Her deterioration is at a point where it is accelerating markedly.
@americanrambler4972
@americanrambler4972 2 года назад
In the 1950’s, the SS United States was the fastest ocean liner built, and the pride of the American fleet of ocean liners. But she was never the most opulent or luxurious. And she was not the most beautiful liner either. However, she does have very sleek lines and her own graceful unique look. She has great Performance and structurally she was built to a very high standard. (Military specifications were used in her hull and her functional equipment). But unfortunately, that did not make her a profitable ship to operate. I currently do not foresee any situation where she will be restored or refurbished for preservation or used commercially in the near or long term future. The time of her scrapping is approaching. Just to repaint her would cost multi millions of dollars. Who is going to provide that funding? Donations certainly do not and will not.

Being such a gas guzzler brought her down. The government did not have much interest in supporting a reserve troop ship of such size anymore and transatlantic passenger traffic was at an all time low, so it was uneconomical to keep fueling her. Restoring this ship to full seaworthy condition with the original machinery would cost all the money in the world, but I'm sure if Cunard and QM2 can turn a profit on the North-Atlantic run and part-time cruising, the United States could do it too. However even in her current state the SS US is a prime example of nautical engineering, remaining afloat in such disrepair for decades.

Look at the design she has, despite its decrepit paint and the rust eating away , she's still unbelievable magnificent ,a beautiful and great lady, even today. Those who love ships and particularly Ocean Liners, the real ones, those who were still on a human scale; cannot remain insensitive to so much beauty. Good morning and Happy New Year. I HAVE SOME VERY VERY BAD NEWS. PLEASE READ!! 😢😢 Court date set for Tuesday January 16th at 8 am Philadelphia courthouse. Please go there and help😢😢.. The SS United States is facing serious and immediate threats. The vessel’s landlord, Penn Warehousing, doubled the ship’s rent during the coronavirus pandemic and has sued the Conservancy, demanding back rent and the removal of the ship from the pier. The Conservancy has been unable to secure an alternative berth, and a trial is scheduled in mid-January. An unfavorable judgment would devastate the Conservancy and likely compel us to relinquish control of the vessel. The Conservancy’s board is now evaluating various contingencies on a very tight and demanding schedule. If Penn Warehousing wins a judgment against the Conservancy, the SS United States may have to be scrapped.
