SsangYong Musso 2024 review: XLV Ultimate | Cheap dual-cab ute alternative to Ford Ranger 4x4 tested

You'd be forgiven for not realising that the 2024 SsangYong Musso is a thing. After all, it competes in the incredibly competitive mid-size ute segment, which is currently dominated by the Ford Ranger, Toyota HiLux and Isuzu D-Max. Needless to say, the Korean model has its work cut for itself.
It's no surprise, then, that the Musso has been given an update to keep it fresh against its rivals - and that's before you take into account the very recent arrival of the next-generation Mitsubishi Triton. Either way, the SsangYong has upgraded to a 12.3-inch touchscreen multimedia system (up from 8.0 inches) and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster (up from 10.25 inches), plus there's more.

Own the Rexton which Musso is based on and basically suv version of the musso. Great car, build quality is great and service centre has been good so far. Highly recommend.

Have 2023 model, happy with it. 25,000km so far, so good. ANCAP needs to be understood, treat the Musso as a 4 seater, enjoy no driver facing camera. - Check Cadogan's new triton review.

Most Korean vehicles are fantastic & I think they will be large players in the future of utes. Ps give more manual transmission options 🙏

I was a manual driver for about 15 years. I was very suprised at how good the auto was in this ute. I dont miss my manual gearbox at all and have been driving a musso for 3 years.

It would be good if these reviews would include some basic specs like wading depth and suspension upgrading. Before anyone buys this Ute you really need to look at the specs. Wading depth is 220mm, any sort of creek crossing will potentially void your warranty. You can’t lift the coil model over 43mm without upsetting the pinion angles, you can’t adjust the trans or diff angles in the coil model. Warranty support to disgusting, far better of with a base model triton or go to a cannon, at least GWN provide half decent customer support

We.are going to get this as its cheap with a 7yr warrenty. Not interested in paying through the nose for a Hilux or Ranger.

Bought the 23 musso short w/b cant update the nav system , dealer says ring the main company (still waiting for email) now the dealer i bought it of does not recommend a bull bar , too many problems with cameras etc , starting to regret this purchase>>>

I have owner a Musso for about 3 years. One annoying feature is the radio dominance. I turn the radio off but everytime you access the radio features like Android auto it will default back to radio. It will automatically start even though you turned it off on the last drive. Another annoyance is that the seat temps have to be restarted on every drive, why can't it be left on from the previous drive. Another annoyance is the screen access button has no 'back' feature and it is frustrating to be forced to rotate through the menus.

Hi, mate. What's the view over the screen, like? Is it bright and reflect back in your face and therefore effect night vision on road? How are the road lights at night time? How is the high beam? Thanks.

@Shilo-fc3xm I don't have any issues with the center screen, but then i have the radio off and is normally in clock mode. The dash screen is fine too. The 360deg camera is handy, but if it is bright sunlight, finding the parking lines can be tricky. The lights are not good enough, I put a set of LEDs on, they made an improvement, but if I did a lot of night driving they would leave me wanting more. I think a light bar would help. I find you can turn out of the lights when turning hard left, so more light out there from a light bar would also help. My car is 3 years old, don't know what the latest ones are like. I would consider getting another one. No radar cruise control can be annoying as well. All the best. I hope that helps.

Prefer this over the LDV and GWM… never have a DPF issue unlike the other 2.

Well it's a race to see which manufacturer can create the biggest front end grill, so when you hit a pedestrian they are definitely going to get the full force.

as other have said, better off getting gwm, there is a few reasons to why. Gwm is selling about 4k cars a month (up a lot YOY) vs ssangong which is down a lot and only selling a few hundred cars a month thats 1/10 the sales of gwm. GWM also looks nicer, has adaptive cruise, more mods, lane keep, other safety stuff. I can't talk about reliability but I see way more gwm cannons than these on the road

The Musso does have lane assist (on the ultimate model) and a heap of other features not mentioned in this review. Sales numbers arent everything. Ford Ranger outsell everything and everyone knows about their engine failure rate so well that its a running joke as to when it will break.

So just because people choose a cheaper chinese made Ute, does that make it seem like the logical choice ? They are cheap for a good reason and people that know the difference should stay away from them. At least the UK has woken up and banned GWM from their markets. Australia has got no standards in comparison.

Centre screens shitting themselves, non exsistant after sales care. Driveline vibration at 80kmh that nobody seems to be able to fix? Yeah real good value!😂😂 Was seriously considering one till i done the research. Wouldn't go near one now.

80kmh viabration has been solved now. most people who had the issue have a drivetrain mount/dampener that wasnt making enough contact/pressure. after sales care is fully dependant on the dealership, theres good ones and bad out there
