SSB side by side of XieGu G90 and Icom IC 703 April 2019

Here I just do a quick side by side test on SSB under some very poor band cdx using the ICOM IC-703 and the XieGu G90. Pre-amps were off on both radios and I was using internal speakers on both radios as the G90 only has a headphone port and no external speaker jack, and audio on the headphone jack would require an amplified speaker be used. Nothing scientific here, just wanted to show you all a brief side side.

I have the 703+. Do not want to get rid of it because of: 1. Low power draw. 2. Uses the same port as the 746pro and 2720 for SignaLink. Plus LDG IC100 tuner.

Yes you can connect a speaker. Connect it and push volume button.

SirHaugen sure u can but it is attenuated for headphones and will not push full audio, Xiegu said it may harm the radio as well the audio amp

The 703 has a better sounding audio and is as solid as a brick.

Isn't the fact the 703 was receiving with the coax in your hand more due to poor case shielding on it and the Xiegu has better shielding?

Both are good radios. However, I would NEVER trade my IC-703 for the G90. The IC-703 is a beefier radio with an easy to read display. I like the Rx audio quality much better on the IC-703. But I would own a G90 as it has it's good qualities as well. Six of one and a half-dozen of the other.

Just took the IC-703 out of its storage tote this weekend to use. It is a nice radio still to this day for sure, I find it a bit noisier to my IC-7300, but close with other rigs like the G90 and FT-817...cheers Fred VE3FAL

Wow nice comparison Fred, maybe make a pro and cons comparison would be fine. ;) I own a 703 and I love it. I use de RF gain to balance de noise and that receiver rocks that way. Thinking in a future about the g90

Eduardo Power keep in mind as well that the 703 is an older analogue rig and the G90 is an SDR radio. Speaker on G90 is much smaller and filter default state for SSB is currently set at 2.4k. Maybe bring out my FT817 next and put it up against the G90. Only other rig I have close to SDR is my KX2.....cheers Fred

The IC 703 seems a little more noisy than the G90 plus it does not have a waterfall display. Once you start using a waterfall, it is hard to go back.

@@TXLorenzo - Unfortunately the screen on the G90 is about the size of a postage stamp. Wait until you are in your 60's and you'll see what's not to like...lol!

It seems that the G90 has a quieter receiver than the 703, I had trouble making out what was being said on the 703 but heard it fine on the G90. It's really hard to tell though on a video. Good comparison Fred.

Why not compare with weak stations that would be better. CW comparisons would also be better.

hey great comparison. been looking for this type of video cause I strongly believe the RX on my G90 is DEAF. I compared it to all my other HF radios and an S5 signal on my G90 is a s9+10 on Ts950sdx, I have been trying to return it under warranty but They keep making do test. I was told to reflash the firmware which did nothing. Any suggestions?

The RF Gain defaults to 50% and the S-meter is supposedly correct then. However I use 1% mostly (less hiss) which makes the S-meter annoyingly very low. A user says the new 1.7.6 firmware (fixes AGC) means his now needs 72% RF Gain instead to show S9 at 50uV.

Also, some have had a thin wire break, which connects the aerial socket on the inside to the circuitboard.

Even G90 having narrower BW it's not as much comfortable to listen than ft817. It's super tiring for me thou. To the point that I sold my G90 after last Field Day Contest. Changing radio from g90 to ft817 after 12h of contest work was a huge relief. I have bought IC-703 after selling g90. They will be compared during next Field Day, however they appear to be equally preforming rigs. G90 have it's advantages, but SSB reception is not among them.

Interesting video. I like the pan adapter on the G90. Looks like a neat little radio. I have an Elecraft KX2 and a KX3, but I just can't part with my IC703+. It's a great little radio. Barry, KU3X/QRP

Barry Kery I agree.I own 2 IC-703+ xcvrs,and wouldn’t trade either one,even for two Xiegu G90’s.

Interesting. I have to say I’m quite fond of the old 703. It will be interesting to compare it to the G90 when it arrives. Of course the 703mkii will put out more power when I need it.

jimthvac100 I’m working on comparing the G90 to the ICOM 706 mk II and the yaesu 891. They are all great radios. The yaesu May have the upper hand though in terms of clean understandable speech when listening. The 706 II though is something that I think lots of folks have and still use to very good effect

@@johnpeterson7264 I have been thinking of buying the 891 for portable use. I seen several videos on here where it works good for that purpose. especially with these LiFePO4 packs so easy to make. I seen a link but can't find it now where a VERY nice SDR radio is coming soon from Germany. I think it had a waterfall display and even 6 meters. All mode @ 20 watts.

Well YES you may run an External Speaker thru the Headphone jack.It's NOT Brain Surgery after all.

That's pointless in my case as whilst portable, i NEVER bring an external speaker, so yes this is a better idea to compare them with their stock speaker.

I've used mine with a small subwoofer out of a 28" Sony CRT and it's loud enough, but quieter than the internal one.

@@VE3FAL1Fred Use a powered speaker... mine had a 3.5mm jack on the back... that'll change the audio tone/quality a lot, most of em have batteries that will last upwards of 4 or 5 hours
