If Social Security approves me for disability, there's NO WAY my long term disability insurance company can deny my claim. Well, that's a common misconception we hear. The fact that you are receiving or have been approved for Social Security does not necessarily mean you're going to qualify and be approved for long term disability benefits.
The law requires the long term disability insurance to take note of and not ignore the fact that a Social Security claim has been approved. A long term disability claim is governed purely by the contract of insurance between the insurance company and you, as the beneficiary. The criteria that qualifies you for long term disability under that insurance is different from the criteria that would qualify you for Social Security disability benefits.
