Awesome video, sir. Loved seeing those old maps, I always enjoy when I find an old RPG that has those still in the box. Had no idea Gold Box Companion existed, either!

Spelljammer only takes the combat engine from gold box games. The rest of the game uses a different engine, that is not connected to other gold box games.

Hey MJR, can you do a mini-series on classic RPGs from the late 80s or early 90s that are actually still playable today.

During my military days, a group of my friends would get together for a night of D & D and beer. We did a few campaigns in the Forgotten Realms series. I even read the novel ," Azure Bonds". Unfortunately, I never got into the video games for the series. Thanks for the nostalgia

I was introduced to the Gold Box Series during my first Army tour of duty in Germany. My buddy across the hall was a big Amiga fan and we made several trips to a computer store in Nuremburg before he scored a game he had been waiting for...at the time I misheard him and thought we were seeking "Polar Radiance"...it was only after seeing the box for the first time did I realize it was "Pools of Radiance". We got back to post, fired it up his A500 (I purchased mine just a couple of months later), and the next month or so was a blur. I have since replayed both the Forgotten Realms and the Dragonlance series (and have also used the truly excellent "Gold Box Companion").

I played the Gold Box games on the Commodore 64, but I think the way I played it was very unique from the way anyone else played it. You see at the time I was in the Army and stationed at Fort Hood, TX. I was the DM for a Dungeon and Dragons group in my unit. When the first game Pool of Radiance came out we got together and each of us controlled one character in the game. During encounters with me mostly at the control of the game, I would move each character how each person in the group wanted and then cast spells or attack how they wanted. We essentially played through the Gold Box series like it was a regular D&D campaign. You brought back some awesome gaming memories from that with this video. Love your channel too sir. I hope to get mine up to your standards someday. If you ever do a video about promo materials hit me up. I'm in the Lynnwood area and used to do game reviews for NWCN and KING 5 (until they let us go after NWCN went off the air). I have some very unique items they sent out to media only... I'll even bring some beer. ;)

I also recall doubling-up, or possibly more, on single-player C64 games back in the '80s. One we really had fun doing that with was MicroProse's Silent Hunter sub 'sim'. One player would be the captain, giving orders and operating the periscope, while the other ran most of the keyboard commands (reloading, up/down scope, maneuvering & diving the boat, etc). It worked out really well.

I just recently tried a goldbox game for the first time (Pool of radiance). I kinda expected it to be way to dated to be fun, but I also remembered you talking very fondly of them so I gave it a shot. I'm very happy to say that my expectation was dead wrong. It has a learning curve but the feeling of adventure is great and the battles are just right. I'm about 20 hours in by now and no where near slowing down. I predict many golden adventures in my future. Thanks again for giving me that nudge I needed to find something new to enjoy!

I LOVED these games - they were my introduction to Dungeons & Dragons. Played them all! By far, my favorite was actually the NES port of Pool of Radiance. Some serious ear-worm BGMs were added, and all that DRM stuff was removed - no Code Wheel, and journal entries & tavern rumors were all baked right in, so you could just plug it in, load your save, and play.

I loved the "Dark Sun" D&D gold box game back in the day, I didn't see it on your list, but I have to say, it was probably my favorite. Dark Sun is another one of those D&D realms, and takes place on a desert world, with some very cool new creatures and classes that don't exist in other D&D settings. Very cool, I hope you have the chance to get your hands on a copy one day.
