The Cassava: Adding Value for Africa project (C:AVA) is funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and aims to grow incomes of smallholder farmers and processors in Nigeria, Ghana, Uganda, Tanzania and Malawi, by giving them the tools and knowledge they need to participate in profitable and sustainable cassava value chains.
In Malawi, SSTP is working with C:AVA to increase the availability of disease free cassava planting materials. Cassava is the most important root crop in Malawi; it tolerates drought, can be grown with minimal inputs and is the second most consumed crop in the country. However, a lack of clean planting materials for newer, more productive varieties means farmers continue to use older less productive varieties.
