Join me for a walk through the heart of historic St Albans, one of the most fascinating cities in the UK! Located just a short distance outside London, St Albans is a town overflowing with history, as the site of one of the world's oldest schools, what's said to be the England's oldest pub, the last remaining medieval belltower in England, the site of the longest continuous Christian worship in the country, and the ruins of the Roman town of Verulamium, once the third-largest town in Roman Britain.
On our walk around St Albans, we encounter landmarks aplenty, including The Old Town Hall, French Row, The Christopher Inn, The Fleur de Lys, the St Albans Clock Tower, the site of the old Eleanor Cross, The Village Arcade, The Verdun Tree, The Vintry Garden, St Albans Abbey (St Albans Cathedral), The Great Gateway of St Albans Abbey, Romeland Garden, St Albans School, Ye Olde Fighting Cocks, The River Ver, Verulamium Park, St. Germain's Block (remains of Roman walls), an excavated Roman mosaic, and the unearthed ruins of the Roman Theatre of Verulamium.
Thank you so much to Jeremy at St Albans Cathedral for your insight into the building's history, and to the lovely people at the Roman Theatre of Verulamium too! Many thanks also to the following sites for their help in my research of St Albans:

Welcome to St Albans! One of the most historic cities in England, with everything from Roman ruins to an immense Norman cathedral, and even the country's oldest pub (reputedly) just the tip of the iceberg on a walk around the city :) There's so much to see in St Albans, and I hope you enjoy this narrated walking tour, but one thing that we didn't have the chance to mention were the origins for the name of French Row (3:55). Though once known as Cobblers' Row for the historic presence of cobblers, the street later became known as 'French' Row because it's thought that it was once occupied by French troops in the medieval era - though much like the story of the Fleur de Lys, this may not actually be true.

Having visited St. Albans three times already this year, I am very impressed with this historic old city. The Abbey/Cathederal is nothing short of amazing and the Roman museum is also very good. The Ye Olde Fighting Cocks is a very nice old pub but is nowhere near being the oldest pubs in England.

What a wealth of knowledge and beauty. This particular city, I visit quite often, I thought I knew it throughout. But watching this video, I have learned so much more. Is there any chance we could see the city of Cambridge featured on your channel in a close future?

Thank you for this wonderful video and all the historic information. I regularly go to St Albans my favourite town. I love the Cathedral and visit the many exhibitions. Also the lake is so pretty with geese ducks and swans. Recently I climbed the steps in the bell tower, wonderful view at the top looking across to the Cathedral. I also climbed the steps of the guided tour in the cathedral.

Thanks for your video. It’s a long time since I last visited St. Albans and I had forgotten how beautiful the area around the Cathedral is. Though I think as an Architectural historian I would much prefer that the West Front had retained its Norman origins the 19th c Gothic revival front is not at all bad in design and fortunately not overly decorated.

Many of the modern looking buildings on St Peter's St are in fact much older. Some are even medieval structures with Georgian facades.

I'm so envious of people who live in the UK. Old here in the US is like 1850's. We don't have anything like you do and I love history. I plan to come to England and spend two months or more.

ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Js8y-04VkYg.html Seems like you guys DID have the most incredible architecture, mind-blowingFor some reason it was decided that the majority of it got demolished... I've been looking at 'lost' american architecture for the past while...Something happened over there which even Americans and Canadians today aren't even aware of...

Surprisingly, no mention of either of the two battles fought at St Albans during the Wars of the Roses (1455 and 1461)?

Over the past 20 years the council has sold every single parcel of land to developers, allotments and small green areas large enough to get outside with the kids and have a picnic and close enough to walk to , known only by locals all around the city centre quiet pleasant areas the families and children few but know each other. Away from the hoards who pack the large parks such as verulam park. Are all gone, anywhere large enough to fit a house and garden with a private driveway, are now exactly that. Those small open places were like lungs around a small but congested high street, a bypass for trucks and vehicles that can't cope with so much traffic it's like one long train. Now those small green areas have gone a once pleasant town is now a claustrophobic ,overcrowded city that only has one road through it, from holywell hill then it becomes StPeters street . The other roads, small streets are no more than rat runs that people use to avoid the high street that end up at the same place, so are always busy . A small city centre with an ever growing population spreading so fast it will soon swallow Hatfield. Yet the council doesn't care or consider they just look for more spaces, places they can sell to developers so thry can build posh houses or apartments for outsiders . They closed the colleges and sold the land, they closed a museum and sold the land, most of our hospital building is now a posh housing estate. If they could they would sell the Roman park verulamium to property developers , one day they will. Its unbelievable how much StAlbans has changed in just a couple of decades.

Although Stalbans is impressive re its continuous history and remains from the iron age and everything inbetween to the present. It's also sad, sad because we have had a succession of councils that fail to promote to do justice to show visitors Stalbans has more than its Roman history, more than a large cathedral. As a sociable person with a passion for our history I enjoy walking around and talking to visitors when I overhear them wondering about certain things, what date when where ,I've had some great chats telling them about the history , stoties they didn't have a clue happened here. Especially since the council sold the museum which told the post Roman story of stalbans to developers who replaced it with luxury apartments . A council that turned a 250 year old perfectly preserved court house with underground cells with original iron doors. A grade 2 listed building. They ruined turned into the last thing needed in the centre of the city Another tea coffee cake shop With people using abusing the wonderful courthouse, the lovely old wood now stained damaged just somewhere to sit eat spill hot drinks . And a trinket shop selling plastic junk ,aimed at tourists Plastic pencil sharpeners vaguely resembling a Roman soldier, pencils with Verulamium or images of a Roman soldier. Cost of which any one could buy 10 regular pencils. It's tacky most of all its sad . It's a unique place but nobody knows why. It's more than Roman ruins a cathedral and medieval clock tower. Each of them and more attached to real history, battles , roses wars Vikings attacks by , Cromwell, his men the fauliue to blow up the cathedral. Most locals let alone visitors don't know about our 2000+ yr history .

Verulamium Lake is not natural. It was constructed starting in 1929 partly to provide work for the unemployed during the Depression.

Yes, the British disease, binge drinking. There are many beautiful towns in England however the behaviour of many of the residents makes them not as nice as visitors might think. European towns are overall much nicer in that aspect.
