Love your videos. Watched all the old ones to help me out with my lawn we started from seed in 2014. I now have one of, if not the, nicest lawn on the street. (It's also the only one not suffering any dormancy right now!) You're in Florida dealing with a grass I'll never encounter here in Quebec, but I'm now lawn obsessed and enjoy watching the progress you're making with your new lawn!
It was nice to see the progress, my 135x825 lawn is on hold due to no rain in 6 weeks(It looked greener in the winter) Just because Niagara Falls is a few miles away doesn't make it a rain maker. Thanks for all your knowledge and helpful hints.
LOVE your videos. I wish there was more frequent videos like maybe 2 per week. The progress is fun for me to watch. I'm a grass nerd as well. I mow with a toro greensmaster 1000 and cut at 3/4 inch with most my lawn being 100% Kentucky bluegrass mix and another being a 50/50 mix of kbg and perennial ryegrass. The results and cut are incredible. The cool season grass does fine with the right mower as long as it calibrated correctly. I can't wait to see your results with a reel. FYI on a reel: you get what you pay for.
I can confirm that last sentence. I am in Hawaii. Most maintained turf is mowed with either a McLane or Tru-Cut. Even the lawn crews use one of those mowers. I am a lawn care professional that uses a Toro Greensmaster 1000 for mowing. Height of cut ranges from 1/4 all the way up to an inch depending on the type of grass I am mowing. I can tell whether a lawn was mowed with a McLane or Tru--Cut. Out of the two, the McLane leaves a nicer cut if it is sharp and in adjustment.
Wow this was exactly what I needed to know ! I live in Texas and have some damage to my yard from various critters .. moles ... and more recently Armadillos !! I think with your teachings I can prevail . I owe ya a cold one .. subbed .. thanks for the great job on this video
Allyn, I'm really Diggin your videos. You do a great job and I appreciate all the info. As a new homeowner In Bradenton Florida, I am applying these techniques as I go. Thanks again and keep it up.
it's looking good LCN, since you have a small area of Bermuda McLane makes a reel mower in a 17 inch cut push or self propelled. Also waiting patiently for the holganix fertilizer video. Keep watch on your local Craigslist for that mower as always thanks for all the content on lawn care.
Grow ins from plugs or sprigs are no fun. Only thing that maintains my sanity during one is the good chemical tools available for weed control. Once the lawn has established and is being mowed at the correct height of cut for the type of grass, the need to spray decreases tremendously. During a St Augustine grow in, I prefer Atrazine as the preemergent. Other preemergents often affect rooting of the St Augustine stolons. They can make them float on top of the soil without taking root. I am curious to see if the Prodiamine does that to the St Augustine. It is recommended for bermuda grow in with the advisory concerning possible damage to rooting.
you are 100% correct that is does effect the rooting. For me, it's a necessary trade off for now. Once things start spreading more I will switch up the pre-m for sure. Additionally, as you mentioned, once I start mowing regularly that will help it out a bunch
I am wondering if you ever do soil samples and why you don't fertilize while controlling the weeds. And what do you do for insects and fungus control as well.
I got all my plugs in glad I can watch this to keep the faith. Putting down prodiamine tommarow. I am just curious what Nxt package to add. I am going to go with the bio stimulant package hopefully everything in there should help alot .
alan, i had a fiskars mower and it was really nice but didnt work on my lawn (roots and ruts)...if i had a nice flat lawn it would have been much better.
Absolutely love this series! i'm going to copy you. :) Question: Instead of plugs, could I buy a pallet of sod, cut into squares and lay on my prepped ground? Or will the added dirt height cause leveling issues? Or other issues?? Thanks!!!
I'm in Texas I cut my bermuda at 3" it seems fine, I'm curious should just cut it down to about an 1"? this is my first lawn it looks great I think I'm not sure if I'm doing more damage than good
Question, I heard somewhere that watering northern turf during the middle of the day when temps are high will help cool down the turf and get through the hot days of summer. Wouldn't the water droplets act as a magnifying glass and allow sun rays to burn the blades of grass? Also, for those without an irrigation system, a product called Hydretain is something to look into, so far it has been great.
great question - the whole magnifying glass idea is a myth. Truth be told, those 90 plus temps are harder on cool season grasses than anything so cooling the turf down with a little water in the afternoon is a good idea to keep it from heat stress or dormancy.
Its a myth. Otherwise, golf superintendents and sports field managers would not send out crews to mist the grass in hot weather. Failure to keep the grass cool with water would lead to massive loss of the grass.
Wish you would have rolled out some sod, would have had instant domination! Glad to see the Super Recycler coming back, would of thought you were crazy replacing a mower like a Super Recycler with a modern day Lawn Boy (I'd be happy if it were a classic one) :) Lawns up here began entering dormancy, mine needs water bad! Should I water this evening or wait till morning? My city does have a 6PM-10AM restriction. I'm worried if I do this evening my leaf spot might get worse. What do you think?
I was thinking that too. if they know nothing about what he is doing what they are thinking . Guy has grass, guy kills his grass, guy plants little circles of grass, guy mows his yard mostly made up of dirt. They will be shocked when it comes in and he is dominating his neighbors again.
He's biding his time, just until he gets all his little plugs in a row.......then BAM!.......spontaneous lawn domination!! They will believe him now or believe him later.......LOL!!
Do you know of any good pest control to use for what I have been told might be Sod webworms, chinch bugs, mole crickets, possible even moles, as well as just about every other insect known to the State of Florida? Basically my lawn looked fine a few weeks ago now I have a few large patches luckily just in the back yard the look like they have been scalped with the lawn mower. Also as we both know here in Pinellas County and Hillsborough county most fertilizers are band. Do you have any good suggestions for this between now and September? I am very pleased with what did it to my front yard after just one application in mid May. Unfortunately I made an assumption that milorganite would still be available without checking. Went back June 4th and it was too late.
I've got plenty of good content coming showing summer yard care even without the fert. As for insects you can use any over the counter granular insect killer you like. Bifenthrin is a good active ingredient to look for.
thinking about laying strips of zoysia sod... wondering would it be ok to put pre emergent and weed killer down as in this video. would it fill in or not grow cause of pre emergent?
Can someone fill me in as to WHY he went with plugs instead of sod?? I learned in his videos that the plugs gave off good shoots but I'm still confused as to why no sod?
Not Allyn, but a pro that deals with all varieties of warm season grass. I use Tenacity or Pylex. If it is legal in your state, Atrazine + Tenacity is a Syngenta approved combination that lays waste to most grassy weeds in centipede. It will even kill contamination by other warm season grasses.
OK I'm a little confused. So you're trying to get your Saint Augustine to spread but you put down pre emergence. I have the same problem just bought a house have a lot of weeds and not a lot of Saint Augustine
Neither! My HONDA is amazing; mulches the grass fine enough to snort. And, has outlasted any Toro or Lawnboy I've ever owned. Electric start has worked EVERYTIME and has no prob hacking through taller pasture grasses next to the proper lawn.
It's called a pith helmet and for me it's the best outdoor sun hat due to it allowing air to circulate really well. this is the exact one I got amzn.to/28J6v48
they are lemons and they are getting bigger by the day. I hit the base of each tree with Ringer Lawn Restore about a month ago. I'm not sure when they will get ripe but by the looks of it they will be monstrous.
oh that would be fun. I'm going to start messing with these vitamin formulas and see if we can do some testing. I think I will mess with SuperThrive first since it's available everywhere.
