This scene is the pearl in a wonderful film. I had the privilege of visiting Monreale Cathedral, Palermo, Sicily where this wonderful scene was filmed. There I prayed for the late Sir Alec Guinness.... He beautifully portrayed from the heart the words and gestures of Pope Innocent III. A most memorable scene that gives joy and hope to our world
Not recognizing errors by human being, would be worse. If you see today, millions catholichs against pope. I mean, when in history that happened at this magnitud?
God Bless and help us to remember the Franiscians who follow in St. Francis footsteps in thier work for Gods kingdom. Thank you Paulo for putting up these clips!
Anton Babani Like Saint Francis see the beauty in everything and everywhere... God blessing upon you from Ireland 🇮🇪 Open your heart and soul to God and if you don’t know how ask him !
I love this movie because it shows how like the Pope said our original sin, in our human errors, we must seek Humility, But the church still stands, Guided by God Himself, that's what matters. Love Mother church. God bless
Francis wasn't a healer, it is the healer that makes one become a thousand healers. Do you know how it was done, come ask the wondrous woman from heaven and she will tell you how it was done!
Tthe interpretation of Alec Guinness is superb, extraordinary, very intense although short. It's the true perl of the film, the climax of it and it would have deserved the Oscar for best supporting actor. Not even Laurence Olivier would have interpreted better a great Pope as Innocent III.
Indeed. "Fun" fact: I was in trouble with choosing his Hindi dubber. My first choice was Sunil Nagar, whom I've seen as Pitamah ( =Grandsire) Bhishma in Ramanand Sagar's Shri Krishna, but as it turned out that he was non-cooperative (I assume he's atleast bipolar), I had to investigate again. If I hadn't chosen Rajpal Premi for Pietro di Bernardone, I don't know what the heck would happen to the Hindi dubbing. Because Raj has unwillingly (by a Facebook post) reminded me of another serial in which he played: it was Sanjay Khan's Jai Hanuman where he had the title role. I checked out the cast, browsed all the actors in senior roles - and found Sudhir Dalvi, who was Sage Valmiki 2.0 in the serial. An interview with him was the proof that he's an even more authentic counterpart of Sir Alec Guinness than Sunil. I've given a big thanks to Raj for his outstanding social capital, which always keeps some first aid for the werk progress. He's an unreplaceable part of the dubbing cast. Phalguni Parikh / Pica also confirmed that I've chosen the new Pope well because Sudhirji was a very sober man.
@@alondraperez-ramirez8363 You mean the same Catholic church that burned thousands as witches, sold indulgences to finance the St Peter's basilica, the church that went against the Nicene creed to pronounce the superiority of the Pope over all other bishops, the church that sanctified mass conversion of Mayan and Inca people through genocide, maintained armies and actively participated in the 30 Years War in Europe, resulting in thousands of deaths?
@@Tout-Le-Monde02 yes same Church! For you is impossible but for God nothing is impossible. Jesus promised that he will be with the Church to the end. Oh sorry you must be perfect. Peace ✌️
Guinness was trained by John Geilgud whom was arguably an even greater Shakespearean actor than Olivier, so it's really not surprising that Guinness could outdo Olivier in this role.
Jesus came to save the Greeks from their sins and the Romans crucified Him for it. The Greeks weren’t saved, but He did His best- and besides, the Romans got a religion out of it all. - PAX VOBISCUM OMNES.
“Once you were building churches out of mortar and stone, but you were building chapels in the hearts of men, women and children everywhere.” - Saint Clare of Assisi
As a Franciscan monk who lives the contemplative life here in Cumbria, UK, it was such a beautiful video on how Francis touched the life of the Pope amidst such materialism.
I wish i had a similar level of faith in God as St francis. I haven't seen this film but i really enjoyed this clip. dialogue wonderfully delivered by sir Guinness.
such a moving and powerful clip that brings me to tears. "You put us to shame" seeing Francesco in his simple tunic and words of simplcity that make more sense than the words of the pope. Move the pope so very deeply.
"Hamaraa mul paap se vala moha men, ham mul punnya ko purnat aksar bhulte hain." - this is my Hindi translation for the quote. I can't wait to hear Sudhir Dalvi saying it in the studio!!!
It is really in giving that we receive.Pray for us St.Francis of Assisi-intercede for the safety of everyone in this time of uncertainty.May we truly give and help our fellowmen.
This film is full of historical and technical errors. However, inaccuracies not withstanding I believe it more a film or an artistic interpretation of the Spirit of Saint Francis. Another Italian movie called Clare and Francis dubbed in American and not British English is a full biography and much better.
Once was said that "if we get the innocence of child..." Wasnt a common human saying this. obviouSly not talking by maturity, but by the way you see people, without bad and interested thoughts in Heart.
@@howtubeable This theology applies to any generation. If we have eyes of purity we can see it, but this is a grace from God. The pope saw the innocence and simplicity of St. Francis, so this is why he said it. Any man or woman can achieve this innocence and purity, but it requires we interiorlly detach ourselves completely from the world and sin, and have our heart set out completely for Jesus. It's the only way.
When the pope is wrapped in those robes, the way that he closes his eyes in resignation makes them almost seem like chains. I think, perhaps, that for holy men like him, wealth and authority are burdens. However, for a truly holy man, no burden is too great to undertake in the service of God. And yes. There is such a thing as original sin. It was the first of five covenants with God, broken by the decision of a man.
Another Zeffirelli masterpiece with the best saint of the world, Saint Francis ❤️Yes Alex Guiness was a magnificent actor but the actor who portrait Saint Francis is beyond amazing!!!❤️
That was Graham Faulkner, and this was his first film. He was in a handful of TV and movie roles after this, but never achieved stardom. He left acting permanently after 12 years and went to work for a British bank.
I saw this film in 1972 I loved it even though im an atheist because it is such a thing of beauty and so authentic the concept that we are one with the world and all of nature is very comforting
Guinness is a great actor. However this Franco Zeffirelli has presented an image of St Francis that is effeminate and effete. A type of hippie rather than the strong self defacing man he was. Francis wasn't girly and he was throughly loyal to Christ's Church. Read his writings and the primary sources. St Francis has been trivialised and saccharinised out of reality.
God again knocks at the door of our hearts, leading us to St. Francis and his example. A life of simplicity, fraternity, and poverty, just as Pope Francis and the Church today urge us to!
I made a sort of pilgrimage to Assisi many years ago. Before the sadness of the great earthquakes. Toured both the church of St. Francesco and St. Clare. The original chapel in the valley San Damiano where the Lord spoke to him. Very moving and has never left me.
Interesting to revisit this piece (both) and read the comments. Clearly the commentors are impressed by the apocryphal presentation and the impossible dialogue to confirm versus a comment of actual visitation and the heart felt movement of the soul by someone that appreciates the life of St. Francis. Yes, St Francis and a few of his followers met with the Church. The record of what was said has been lost to antiquity. Rome (The Church) would not and did not welcome them and they were at odds for a Very long time.
The end was like the pope was retreated by his followers back into his robes which is more like a prison, and Frances reaching out to want him to be free
Absolutely a beautiful movie that helped shape me in my youth. I still feel the spirit swell up in me every time I see or hear anything to do with the movie. This is a universal message to all mankind from New Ager to Religious.
I like this scene(and movie) a lot, but the depicting of the cardinals and bishops as some greedy evil villainous beeings is a bit too much, an overkill imo. Some of them may were like that like the bishop of Assisi depicted in this movie, but surely not the majority. And yes, bishops, abbots and arch-bishops had some real (this world) power back then, basically like nobility. Like, with lands, private armies, castles and stuff. It doesn't mean they, and the Church itself is/was "bad". I would rather lived under the rule of a medieval bishop than an ordinary medieval lord. Oh and folks did you know that the more humanous prisons, judicature etc was "invented" by the Church, the Papal State to be correct? In fact the secular law enforcement was the actual brutal stuff with all the horrid dungeons, ways of torture, executions etc.
@@r0ky_M Pretty early on, iirc in the first half of the 16th century in the Spanish colonies. Jesuits were also have been evangelised and improved the conditions of many native tribes in the Amazon region. They had flourishing communities (free people!) as early as the 2nd half of the 16th century and 17th century. But the colonising powers crushed them and persecuted them from those areas, sadly. Also it was the Catholic Church (John Paul II) that have asked for forgiveness because of the slave trades, and the exploitation of the native people throughout the world, even though these evil things were done by the actual countries/rulers/conquistadors/slave traders not by the Church.
@@r0ky_M Every country had slavery as a thing only a couple hundred years ago. But Christian countries were the first to abolish them. It is still widely occurs, mostly in musulman states of course. Just look at Qatar with it's upcoming soccer world championship. Ask them, and most other muslim states as well instead: WHEN THEY WILL END SLAVERY?
Saint Francis predicted before he died that the church would fall into confusion and many of the religious societies would apostatize as they are doing now.
A sober tear, fills my eyes...and brings to me an understanding amongst the many deception of the devil today. Fo,r i am not lost only in great sorrow...that always i knew this..great love and service to God...is to truly be an apostle...by throwing down your lust for life..To all catholics...affix the word of God to your hearts, that all may come to clairity through the grace of our Lord and saviour Jesus Christ. You walk as he walks, talk as he talks, and loves as he loves..Jesus is Lord..now and forever. Amen
@@gjshordja I was addressing catholics in particular. But of course it is for all who choose to seek the Lord Jesus with all of their hearts. Yes indeed God's mercy and love is for all who come to him In the Great and holy name Jesus Christ. but we must all be brought to the fullness of the truth. Which is the catholic church. If you pray by way of the Holy spirit you will be brought to great understanding of Gods word. Please go to Dr. Taylor Marshall channel..A great teacher indeed. God bless you. +
Doesn't it just suck that only a few seconds after the most touching scene where the Pope kisses the foot of St.Francis, when your faith in humanity is just about to be restored, when the Holy Spirit moves the most heart-hardened of men....here comes a Judas-like bishop to turn the act into something political in nature @ 5:56 Bastard! That's how fast the evil one can turn something beautiful into something selfish.
@@howtubeable trust me that today we have worms like those in the clergy is sad very very sad and frustrating we all need to pray a lot the things are not so right in the Holly Church right now
What a poetic gem it' s transcend the times its refers and at the same the year that masterpeace was done...a juvenile or an innocent mind who doesnt know about religious manner can receave it delicatly whithout being hurt....bravo!
@JesusgavemeHolySpiri u dont mention unity or truth, how sad. The catholic church is the only church that has the unity that reflects the unity of the Trinity. The catholic church is TRUTH.
"If I saw an angel and a priest walking down the street, I would rather greet the priest than the angel, because the priest has his hands blessed by Jesus Christ." "If the bishops wanted to cut off my head, I would go to seek refuge in the bishops themselves, because the bishops are where they are because God gave them the authority to act." St. Francis.Saint Fancis was not against the riches of the church. Like the bible it is not a book that describes heaven, but how to get to heaven; riches are not bad; they are a means of doing good to others.
The glory of the beautiful churches was and is a great Catechism for all, especially the poor and illiterate of old - who were most people up to the 20th century. How many have been led to faith by the holiness that lives in those spaces. But God lives everywhere? How true, and how easy to forget, as our daily world (more now than in the past I think) contains so many distractions and so little to remind us of Him. Every Church reminds us of what the world is and our culture and lives are meant to be. We are the living temples of the living God. Tabernacles, if you receive His Body and Blood, and have Life within you.
Alec Guinness was brilliant in this film! I haven't seen the whole thing but he brings the character of Pope Innocent the 3rd to life in a special way. From the bishops' and cardinals point of view these are unkept stinking men with no business in the presence of his holiness. But Alec addresses them not as a pope but as a man. One human being to others. I think when he sees Francis he sees what he has been elected to uphold as a symbol of Christ's teachings.
"The creed had become a respectable thing, had become a ritual thing, had then been modified into a rational thing; and the rationalists were ready to dissipate the last remains of it, just as they do today. When Christianity rose again suddenly and threw them, it was almost as unexpected as Christ rising from the dead. [...] Now if we were to dip below the surface of history, I suspect that we should find several occasions when Christendom was thus to all appearance hollowed out from within by doubt and indifference, so that only the old Christian shell stood as the pagan shell had stood so long. But the difference is that in every such case, the sons were fanatical for the faith where the fathers had been slack about it. This is obvious in the case of the transition from the Renaissance to the CounterReformation. It is obvious in the case of a transition from the eighteenth century to the many Catholic revivals of our own time." ~ G.K. Chesterton († A.D. 1936)
(6:17) That moment when Francis realized he was losing the Pope, just when he almost had him. Tsk tsk Some things are just not meant to be. St. Francis was on a higher level than the rest of the Church Fathers.
Revelation 3:20 Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.
Look at the costumes of the Cardinals and the stairs that the Pope walks down. The Cardinals costumes radiate POWER. Get on the other side of the street, when you see them comin.
The Netizen Knight that show is diabolical, I watch season 2 in several episode, I was so in rage with all the nastiness and impurity they portraying us!
Look at the horror in Alec Guinness' face as he looks at St Francis and realizes his shortcomings compared to St Francis' example. Pope Innocent lll (Alec Guinness) realizes this then humbles himself by kissing St Francis' feet.
Bunch of Hollywood falseness.... its not about original sin or innocence, its about going back to the state we were in before the fall of man. That is possible. God can do it, has anyone asked God to FIX the sinful nature within and to receive the literal Spirit of Christ instead of their wretched self that clings to sin like the night clings to dark. HAS anyone read the new testament asking for heaven within now, the Living Water to burst forth in Jesus name and FAST for it?
Another reference on SW connection, which includes the analogy with the name Luke and a Toto song, too: DARTH VADER DI BERNARDONE: Luke, I'm your father! FRANCESCO LUKATHER: It's not in the words that you told me! What is born of flesh, is flesh, what is born of spirit, is spirit! (NB. Hold The Line is one of the songs which I match to the apostrophed scene in my Toto songs' medley BSSM33.)
Yes... the one and only Catholic Saint...St Francis of Assisi plus I hate the people who dislikes this Catholic movie because they're heretics/Protestants.
