St. George leaders say they want East Baton Rouge to return residents' tax dollars

As St. George moves towards becoming its own city, leaders are demanding the City-Parish pay back the taxes St. George residents paid to East Baton Rouge Parish government. Parish officials are adamant that's not going to happen.

****This reminds me of the city of Orania (do a RU-vid search; there are SEVERAL videos) in South Africa. The whites, tired of the endless crime and poor schools in mainland South Africa, formed their own city. After all, it was whites who CREATED the municipality of South Africa originally. And after Nelson Mandala's "rainbow" S. Africa failed, decided they wanted a city of their own. It has become an ovewhelming success. Surprize?

I think the courts will rule in favor of St George since it was EBR that insisted on fighting the voters and not accepting that the district was their own city.

They didnt just pay taxes, they paid a hugely disproportionate share - 18% are now St George, but they paid 80-85% of EBRP tax base. For what?

You can only tax the residents within your borders, that's just a fact of law. Now St George is it's own town, they can spend their local tax dollars on decent educations and better policing and fire depts.

This is this the intelligence of the St George council, trying to put a roadblock to keep baton rouge from coming after them for money. Baton rouge says they're owed back money for roads and municipalities that were built and repaired in St George. They seem to think all the past efforts were spent on St George not BR. by a all democratic leadership 😢

A forensic accountant could find out exactly how EBRP blew the money before the new St George was voted in. That would be expensive, but it would be eye opening. They did it to stick it to St George, but it's not over yet.

St George residents shouldnt work in Baton Rouge. They should work in St George. That way baton rouge will have their money and st george would have theirs. Then they can see what breaking off gets them.

We did not "split" The SG area was NEVER in the city limits of BR. We've been paying for services like the BRPD and BRFD that DO NOT service the SG area

We welcome any and all to move to St. George if you are sick of the BS in Baton Rouge. No wall or signs stopping people from moving in or out of St. George. Only a short minded person like you would think that.

Not so, they just got sick of 18% of the residents of EBRP paying in 80-85% of the tax base while not receiving the services - the 82% that pay in only 15-20% get almost all of the services. Like most of the US.
