The non-chosen can't mean the souls in Purgatory - the chosen or "elect" includes everyone who is saved, so the souls in Purgatory are very much among the chosen. As to the greater number being lost, that is the traditional interpretation of the Doctors of the Church.

John Henry Newman, An Essay on the Development of Christian Doctrine, p. 68 or Chap. 2 #12: “...we shall find ourselves unable to fix a historical point at which the growth of doctrine ceased, and the rule of faith was once for all settled. Not on the day of Pentecost, for St. Peter had still to learn at Joppa that he was to baptize Cornelius; not at Joppa and Cæsarea, for St. Paul had to write his Epistles; not on the death of the last Apostle, for St. Ignatius had to establish the doctrine of Episcopacy; not then, nor for centuries after, for the Canon of the New Testament was still undetermined. Not in the Creed..." (p. 68, Univ. of Notre Dame Press) Pope St. Pius X, Lamentabile, July 3, 1907, The Errors of the Modernists #22: “Revelation, constituting the object of Catholic faith, was not completed with the Apostles.” - Condemned (Denz. 2021)

But he did not say that revelation continued, he said the growth of doctrine and the rule of faith were not once for all settled. Which is clearly true because there have been dogmatic definitions since the death of St. John, and multiple updated Creeds reflecting with greater precision the "rule of faith" - by which I doubt Newman means the "object of faith".

@@CatholicCulturePod Vatican I, Session 4, Chapter 4 (#6), 1870: "For the Holy Spirit was promised to the successors of Peter not so that they might, by his revelation, make known some new doctrine, but that, by his assistance, they might religiously guard and faithfully expound the revelation or deposit of faith transmitted by the Apostles."

​​@@TheRomanCatholicChurchLook nothing personal, but I am going to take the word of Holy Church that also made him not only a Saint but a Doctor of the Church, over your own take here. It is the Church speaking on the Church, and is Her station and authority and charge by God, that is a safe harbor if ever I saw one.
