Why are the houses in downtown St. John's so colorful? >>> ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--Iv5zBk6fbI.html

Nice flyover old St. John's. Lots of great scenes in this video but I do have a favourite at: 2m36s. Two things about the shot: The sunshine is beautiful lighting up Signal Hill but the sunshine would not look that good without Signal Hill. Nice flying, Mark.

I gotta say that I liked that shot a lot too… actually I liked it so much I used it in the video I made right after this one too 🤓 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-FoXaloHqMbc.html

Like you, I grew up just on the outskirts of St. John's (Kilbride had not yet been amalgamated with the city) and, being back and forth to "town" often several times a week, simply grew to under-appreciate the city. The urban renewal that saw the elimination of many of the shoddy, hastily-built low-income houses following the great fire in the area where the Mile 1 Stadium/Mary Brown Centre, and the revitalizing of the residential area with Jellybean Row colours, etc. has made the downtown area so much more attractive. Showing this unique place to tourists has truly made me appreciate its beauty even more! Thank you for what you're doing. It's clear to me that your videos are produced with a sense of joy and wonder, as opposed to a task to be done. Your love of the place and the people (and its fish and chips 😉) is clearly evident! And I get it completely! ❤

Hey Mark, love your content! Wish you would tell us more about the weather in Newfoundland. Planning on moving and staying there soon

Are you sure you want me to talk about the weather?!? Haha… just kidding, I have a bunch of videos about the weather on the channel, please feel free to check them out. Weather is not exactly Newfoundland’s strong suit (to put it nicely) but I love it here anyway. Here’s one video about spring, which in my opinion is Newfoundland’s worst season: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-SF5HY_xzmGA.html

No arguments from me! St. John’s is home but I LOVE the rest of the island too (and one day I’ll make it to Labrador and I’m sure I’ll love it there just as much)

I love that idea. It gets a bit tricky as you get closer to the airport but it is possible with the right authorization. It’s worth trying to get permission though… I’ll try!

Hi, Mark! We'll be moving to St. John's soon from Montreal. This might be too much of an ask, but do you have some good general advice for neighborhoods, activities around the city, etc for people who have a toddler?
@mark_royle_newfoundland
@mark_royle_newfoundland 3 месяца назад
My personal preference is the older neighborhoods (downtown, Rabbit Town, Georgestown) but I have to point out that a lot of people I grew up with in the Mount Pearl (a suburb just west of St. John's) are raising families there or in Paradise (another suburb bordering Mount Pearl) and they wouldn't live anywhere else. I don't really like places like these but there are definitely a lot of kids in these towns, and a lot of good activities/resources/programs for kids.

As usual, it all depends on budget. I personally wouldn't recommend Rabbittown, a lot of university students in the area but also a little rundown. Georgetown is lovely, just outside the downtown core but has traditional colourful row housing,plus right next door to Bannerman Park which is a lovely park for children and adults. Downtown has it's charm but the lack of private driveways makes parking a nightmare, esp. for families. If your budget is a little higher i would recommend the Churchill Park area, specifically around Churchill Sq. I would stay away from Shea Heights, the downtown core between Longs Hill and Barters Hill... a few others but i'll stop the slander there. 😂😂 In general terms, the east end is considered more affluent than the west end although its not completely true. There are new builds all around the city like Kenmount Terrace or the Southlands but they lack the charm of St. John's and you'll need to drive everywhere. There are a lot of great options just outside the city in places like Logy Bay or St. Phillips where the city is just 20 mins away and you can get ocean views, but again you need a car and everything is more spread out.

I'm genuinely worried you're going to be inundated with housing escapees from the rest of Canada (cough Toronto), sending the prices up for locals. Happening in Nova Scotia.
@mark_royle_newfoundland
@mark_royle_newfoundland 3 месяца назад
It is already happening here too, primarily in St. John's. A lot of people are moving here and prices are going up. It doesn't seem to be a dramatic increase in prices so far but it is noticeable. It is a bit of unique situation as our overall population has still not caught back up to the level it was at in 1992, when more than 10% of the people in our province moved away in less than a decade. So there's room for people to move here, but we still have greedy people/corporations buying up everything they can get their hands on, driving up the prices for people who just want a place to live. Outside of St. John's you can still get amazing houses on amazing properties for amazing prices though!

@@mark_royle_newfoundland Buying as investment or speculation really makes me angry. Bloody airbnb is ruining entire communities in the UK. If I moved to NFLD I think it would to be St John's, and maybe I've already missed the window.
