This is day 1 of the summer 2023 trip to Eastern Nebraska and this video was filmed the last week of July. This drive was going east on St Joe River Road in the northern panhandle of Idaho. Part 2 of the scenic byway is coming soon, plus my first free night of camping on this trip! I passed 3 forest service campgrounds west of Avery, all were closed for construction. My memory card filled up just 2 miles west of Avery, next time I will capture this town and try the road to Wallace! These videos are made in realtime and not sped up or edited in any way, what you see is what you get. Please enjoy, subscribe, like, and comment :)

There was camping at Calder and Big Eddy. Mosquitos are horrible at Big Eddy. Restaurant closes early and opens late. Calder Restaurant used to be pretty good. This all Nat Forest. It's your forest. Find a wide spot and stop.

This was a bad night drive for me, I wanted to stay in a campground but they were all under construction or private. I did find an open free spot by the river just past Avery. Most of my trips I have a destination to get to so I can not explore as much as I would like. This was one of my first times trying to explore the backroads, in many of my previous videos I would always stick to the pavement when driving a 25 foot RV that comes with no spare tire!!! No RV now but a 4x4 truck, way more confident. Even better with 10 ply AT tires, ditched the horrible highway 3 ply. I am learning and getting better!

You are driving on an old railway right of way. The only reason Avery existed was the railroad. There are zero tourist facilities. I suggest that you check a map ahead of time before you go somewhere.

I have the Delorme Gazetteer maps. If the 3 forest service campgrounds before Avery had not been closed for construction it would have allowed me to stop sooner. I guess it is a big fishing area? I had thought there might be hiking trails to? I want to do the Avery to Wallace road sometime, a logger I met that night when I finally found a camping area said that that road is very rough. I have never seen an area like this before with so many travel trailers just left on private land, must be very nice for the owners :) Thanks for the railroad info, I had no idea. I did get the impression that the area was highly logged, go loggers!
