Definitely surreal, and almost unreal. While The Pop Group had a bit of a following and were appreciated by a few listeners and critics, for the most part, they were definitely not among the more popular bands of their time. And one would have expected their music to remain obscure and ignored. So, it's almost shocking to hear their music played on mainstream TV, well into the 21st century.
The amount of balls you have to have to play a Pop Group song for a mainstream audience, as well as on Jimmy Fallon's show must be beyond human imagination.
@MagnumPineapple27 No balls required - far from it. A tragicomically awful performance. She was miming the guitar, and completely dishonoured the original version. Utterly abysmal.
those eyes. those incredible eyes... so mesmerizing. and as a musician.. she's untouchable. incredible. unique. and hot damn does she ROCK! st. vincent. best thing that has happend to music..
The balls to cover the pop group in general and in such a mainstream platform...I gotta admit she has won a fan in me. Yeah the vocal isnt insane...But hell, this is a pretty cool cover.
He must have thought it was an alternative way of referring to The Beatles. "A cover of The Pop Group? Yeah sure Annie go ahead, could it be Yesterday?"
Hey, this is good! Glad to see St Vincent cover it. The Pop Group's 'Beyond Good and Evil' was an astonishing debut single when it was released over 30 years ago. I remember playing the 12" vinyl record really loud when I was a Uni student C1980. Still sounds amazing today, check it out.
What 😯🤩🤩😂‼️ Am I seeing. I am continually blown away by St Vincent. BTW... I just edited my comment.. didn't realize that I originally put up a negative emoji.. my apologies 😌
Yes, *exactly*-- well said! *Dig* that groove! We don't need any stinkin' Western Values buggerin' up our good time! Why? Because our fuckin' *love* is borne on a ray of *sound!!* At least that's what the Reet Rev. Joni "Peachy" Nietzschell at the local storefront PostAnarchite GospelSong Church of What's Happenin' Now advises me,at the weekly Love-Supreme Oldies-Revival Sängerbund. Cheers!
Jimmy Fallon's fave band is The Pop Group. Yeah, riiight "What Pop Group are called THEEE Pop Group?" So surreal it's kinda funny. "St Vincent? Is that where I'm going on vacation next week?"
Somehow I’ve missed this having seen every single photo, video, interview ,post and 2 shows. SHE IS SO INTENSE !!This song obviously is very powerful for her. I love all that throwing and thrashing around-dare I say the frenzy is quite sexual. Powering up on n ational tv- scare those people, Annie!
seriously...why doesn't she do a punk album...i'm sure it would be awesome! she's got the guitar chops and the fierce attitude to totally do it as only she can!
Sune Weisberg Pedersen personally I don't see much point in doing covers unless your going to add something to it or do something different - this is just a poor homage to the Pop Group and her vocal is not good at all
Sune Weisberg Pedersen splitting hair here aren't you - obviously I'm expressing my opinion that I think her vocal is not very good and that her version is not as good as the Pop Group' original - is that acceptable to you?
It is. Just saying you can cover a song without "addaing something (completely) new to it". Though I would expect more if it were a recorded version on an album or something.
um, yeah she's an awesome guitarist, but what makes you think you need any guitar chops to play "punk" music, whatever that means at this point in time.
Nah. She follows her own freak flag. Artists shouldn't have to repeat themselves to appease people who are merely following their lead, and certainly shouldn't take to heart followers who bitch about content. Be creative in criticism, otherwise you're saying nothing.
