St. Vitus Dance Rag, by Herbert Ingraham, from 1909.
This week's video is another rag, and one with quite the unusual name. "St. Vitus Dance" is the colloquial term for the movement disorder Sydenham's chorea, and also one of the names for the unexplained 'dancing mania' phenomenon that occurred in Europe between the 14th and 17th centuries. (This mania sometimes consisted of thousands of people dancing erratically until they collapsed from injury or exhaustion.) This rag is certainly very lively and danceable, regardless of which meaning the composer intended.
Herbert Ingraham was another promising ragtime composer who died too soon, but left us with many high-quality rags, especially in 1909 the year before his death. You can read more about him on Bill Edwards excellent ragtime resource website:
