Picked up a Stabila Pocket Pro Magnetic Level with improved magnets. Better than my other but far short of Milwaukee. Using a wrench pickup test, the new Stabila can pack its own weight but the Milwaukee can pack ten times more. And my old Stabila can barely stay awake.

Wish I had seen this video before ordering one. Really disappointed that it’s made of plastic and really kicking myself for not getting the Milwaukee. I’ve used the Milwaukee and I just assumed Stabila would make a better product, and I was wrong.

I stick with my stabila plus it’s got a holster. It’s a great tool.

@@user-vh9hs4qe7rI was gonna return it but decided to keep it at home where I don’t need the extra features of the Milwaukee. The Stabila is awesome for hanging picture frames and TV wall mounts, etc, but I’d call it consumer grade and that’s not the Stabila I know and love. I’m not confident the Stabila would survive a fall off an 8’ ladder. No question the Milwaukee will.

That rounded Stabila looks like their Poket Electric, which has a very special and awesome use turning a 40-60 cm steel ruler into most convenient level for marking socket and switch layout. Has a tiny but crucial lip on the back, put it against the ruler edge or (!) top. This is why the magnets kinda to the back side.

The thing is with that magnetic test is all the level really has to do in the field with that feature is to hold itself up
@lastbesttool
@lastbesttool 2 года назад
I've found it needs to hold two or three times its weight otherwise a bump, twist or shake will send it flying. The earlier version held its weight, but that was all and that was the problem.

My go to is my metal empire torpedo. Magnets are plenty strong, and it has a third bubble that is dead nuts accurate with the bubble touching the line.

Thanks for the overview Doc. I have both the stabilia and milwaukee and favor the stabilia a bit just because it's lighter and a bit more compact than the milwaukee. That milwaukee is built extremely well though.

My go to is a Empire 9" UltraView LED Torpedo Level, because its easier to set up than a laser line level and I've got poor lighting everywhere I want to level something.

Super strong magnets are cheap and abundant. It’s crazy how many brands haven’t figured it out.

The round corner Stabila is my most used level. I'll take a look at the Milwaukee.
@lastbesttool

The round corner Stabile was my favorite when a magnet wasn't needed. But often a magnet connection was helpful. That's why I was excited about having a Stabile mini with a magnet strong enough to hold it's weight securely. The Milwaukee, it could be argued, has too strong a magnet.

I have a question. I see all these videos where people have levels lifting all these weights. Is this some thing you would be doing in the real world . Lifting weights with a level . I get that a level should hold its own weight and 99% do but I’m not getting this weight test that everyone is doing . What I want to know is what level is good for what job and I only seen a few (like 2 ) videos that touch on it . Please explain maybe I’m missing something. I did plumbing for a long time ( roughing and jobbing ) and never heard anyone say look at how much weight my level can hold . 😁 I would like to know your thoughts. You should do a video on what level is good for what kind of job . You have a great channel . 👍

I view weightlifting as a proxy for the probability that the level will fall off the workpiece if it only holds its own weight then it will detach if bumped or jerked because those forces exceed the initial weight. I have dropped many levels simply by a twist or shake of the object or surface under inspection. And if the iron content is alloyed, the magnetic strength is reduced as well meaning a stronger magnetic is now just an average grip. Thanks for the question.

What is the relevance if a magnetic level do not support a spanner weight, or an elephant, if that level is designed to support it own weight? Just try to put that Milwaukee level on a vertical pipe.

Stabila has the most reliable and consistently accurate vial system. I dont trust anything else. And it only has to support its weight. I dont care if it cant lift a 3 lb wrench. I would find the magnet strength of that Milwaukee to be annoying in use.
@lastbesttool
@lastbesttool 2 года назад
Thanks for watching. I agree the Milwaukee magnets are annoyingly strong, but my earlier mini Stabila would fall off easily and spin around because the magnet, as you put it, "only has to support its weight." Any movement, bump, twist or shake would send the level on its way. And the use of a level implies movement or adjustment.
@icebmwpower
@icebmwpower 4 месяца назад
What means “Stabila has the most accurate vial system”? If not wrong the STABILA accuracy was 1mm / 1m and MILWAUKEE was 0.5mm / 1m… PS. In addition some SOLA models were offering 0.3mm / 1 m.
@Willies_shop

The level really has to only support its own mass. You should never strike a magnet on steel. It will decrease the magnetism.
@lastbesttool
@lastbesttool Год назад
Any force introduced to the level will knock the level free unless the magnets are two or three or more times stronger than the weight-strength of the magnets.
@Willies_shop
@Willies_shop Год назад
@@lastbesttool I would agree wholeheartedly. What I meant was they don’t have to lift wrenches that weigh several times their own weight to be a good serviceable product. I use mine mainly in metal work and I have some levels that have magnets over and above that required and it can be a pain to remove them and they attract metal filings and grinding dust more than they should, so your constantly trying to keep them clean.
