Stacked Daikin Mini Splits Installed On Custom Stand. Hmmm....

Here we install a Daikin mini split over top of one that we installed last summer. We ordered a stand for stacking it but when the stand arrived it was a different brand than the one that we had ordered and instead was a Chinese knock off of the one we purchased online. We ended up building this one and it turned out pretty good. We have some final tweaks so we are going to return in the next week and if you all have any suggestions we will gladly use them on our return visit.

L bracket off off your strut with spring nut, use a 3”x3/8” sleeve anchor, that’s what I do

I personally would have raised the top condenser or offset the condensers bringing the bottom unit forward in order to remove the lid to gain access to the boards for troubleshooting or replacement.

Yeah in all honesty I think that this was the biggest flaw in the install. This was the main thing that bothered me but at the same time I didn't really want to raise it more. We have about 6 inches there between them. Not ideal

Funny story about the unit on the bottom: The unit is a VRBO and the owners had an existing mini split that leaked out its charge. They had a handyman install a Mr Cool and he did such a bad job that we ended up ripping it out and installing the Daikin one you see there. It was not a perfect install because the VRBO tenant vacated the property for 6 hours for us to do the job. We ended up finding out that the handyman had caused a leak in the wall and we could not reuse the line set. This is on an island so we had to take a long drive to get a line set and get a concrete cutting company to cut a hole for a new line set. The tenant was pissed that we took 8 hours to do the job. We have offered to come back and clean up a couple things on the bottom unit but the homeowner has never answered our texts or calls. They still referred us to the neighbor though so 🤷‍♂🤷‍♂🤷‍♂

The indoor unit was mounted on 2x4s so it protruded off the wall a couple inches. He couldn't figure out how to connect the line set without having the unit hanging off the wall a little. The lines were sweating behind the unit and dripping onto the cabinets. The drain attachment was broken so it was dripping. The flares were leaking and the preexisting line set was kinked like 2 feet in the wall so we had to run a new one. It was a nightmare. Wish I had pictures

flip the u channel on the top condenser over so the feet are sitting on the flat surface...otherwise nice fix!

How would you then recommend securing it to the channel itself? We currently have those little spring nuts in the channel and the unit bolted to it

@@SurfBrosHVAC forget the spring nuts and use real 1/4 -20 or similar actual bolts with nylock nuts.. stainless prefered

45° cross braces and welding will improve rigidity. You can mix it up a little bit, music once in a while. Kept nice and low like you did is best. Thanks.

You aimed the drain line directly at the outlet! 5:04 Either go above it or below it, but not directly at it! What you should have done is make the turn at the ceiling, and then run straight down to the drain, rather than have a drain line on the wall where people can bump into it. No music in these types of video please. Putting the A/C inside that nook is going to seriously harm efficiency. And they will ingest each other's warm air.

The GC marked the exact spot for us to end the drain in a picture I have from him. We put it exactly where he wanted it as he said he would finish it. This job had so much back and forth over the 7 months we've had the unit I kind of stopped giving suggestions. Both these units are VRBOs. Both homeowners know that the efficiency will be lower being tucked back there and both of them still wanted it there anyway. The beach is about 50 yards from where this unit is installed and the hottest it will get in the parking garage in mid summer is about 80 degrees. San Diego is crazy forgiving on clearances. It's nearly impossible to get a mini split to go off on high pressure here. You could have it up against a wall and it will still probably work properly. Inefficient but it will work.
