Jessica, while I’m not a seasoned potter, I do feel semi-confident around the studio. I used to watch John Britt, Simon Leach and Bill VanG and others. THEY are seasoned potters like yourself. But it seems that when I look for potter videos, I immediately search yours first. Your tips, techniques, ideas and how-to videos are excellent. I always learn something from you. Plus, you are upbeat, funny and adorable. I like that you show us around your studio and are not always focused on the wheel. I’m subscribed, OF COURSE, and I look forward to watching and learning from ALL of your videos! Thanks so much!

You are always so helpful. I am very brand new to ceramics and shopping for a kiln. I was scared to get a kiln that was older with the kiln sitter. But, it doesn’t look that difficult.

Another informative video, thanks. I've seen other potters doing a bisc loading and they stack pieces on top of one and other, but I like the way you do it, your reasoning makes sense. I love looking at your pieces and getting ideas and I really liked the size and shape of your mugs, how high o you throw them, please. Cheers Bob 🇬🇧

According to the kiln doctor if your cones are sticking you can put a dab of kiln wash on the top of the two sitter bars and one dab on the bottom of the rod.

I am looking into getting a skutt programmable kiln. Can you make a video that shows how to use that kiln? Thank you! Your videos are very informative & to the point 😊

In another video can you show what your pyrometer looks like and how you use it with your L&L? I have a kiln sitter and haven't used it yet... a bit nervous about it possibly not shutting off. A pyrometer would solve that issue as it would let you know that proper temp was reached - as you mentioned in this video! Thanks for the demo... nicely done!

Nice video on loading a kiln. Curious if you prefer gas/oil based kilns vs electric kilns to do ceramics and glazing in ? Do you do any glass making i am also curious if you prefer a different type of kiln for glass making. I imagine if your kiln can do all ceramics and glazes it won't have any problem in doing glass since glass normally melts at lower temps then ceramics/clay based material.

Hi Laura! Love your videos ! Can you please tell me how much space you should have between shelves? About a half inch? For air flow?

Jessica, why does it hurt to wobble a bit? I only do 04 to 06 stuff, but never check for wobble.

I like the pyro bars safety trick these seem to take the place of the cones melting over with the safety add in. Curious what is the difference between glaze kilns vs this kiln vs other kilns... Why can't you get one big kiln that can do all range of temps all in one (I imagine a good kiln can do all temp ranges for any ceramic , glaze, or glass making is this not true in practice?? ) . Do you prefer to uses different kilns for different purposes or to make production more organized ???

How do you tell if your shelves are warped? I just bought an old gal (older than yours). A Vulcan from the 60's and she came with some shelves but I didn't realize they can warp. How long do shelves generally last?

If I made a coffee cup like in one of your videos do I have to have a kiln or can it be air dried and still work the same?
@francesgribbon5322
@francesgribbon5322 6 лет назад
Amanda Thomas ... it would not work. Clay must be fired and be vitrified in order to be water proof.

The first kiln shelf that becomes the bottom, was it sitting in something? I thought I saw three of something.
@francesgribbon5322
@francesgribbon5322 6 лет назад
Wendy Matson she keeps the bottom shelf about 1” above the kiln floor. You can use three 1” stilts or lay larger stilts on their side. This raises the shelf off the bottom 1” for air flow.
@fountainpen2448
@fountainpen2448 5 лет назад
I think she placed the first kiln shelf on three kiln posts. You don't want to block the air flow in the bottom of the shelve while the first shelve is protecting the kiln's bottom.

Is that a good rule even for electric kilns? Should it shut off immediately as it reaches the temperature or does it rest there for a while before shutting off?
@francesgribbon5322
@francesgribbon5322 6 лет назад
Nate Brown with a kiln sitter, as soon as the cone melts, it bends. When it bends, it shuts down.

Hi, I was given a kiln an it has a broken top, made of fiberglass I was told, the pieces are inside. It's electric. My question is how can I fix it cause otherwise it is in perfect condition.

Yes Laura this kiln is an L&L J18, it is a 18" octagon and has about 3.5 cu.ft.of volume. It is the smallest of my three kilns and my favorite!

Also is there any reason you cann't make your own kiln shelves and kiln sticks out of cement/concrete molds/casts. Concrete will burn a little but won't melt under ceramic and glass melting point temps i imagine. Or just using regular bricks or make your own ceramic kiln sticks /shelves in the kiln??? So you always have an unlimited supply of all the shelves/sizes you want. So then if a student wrecks a kiln shelve its not a big deal :)
