In this second episode of Life in the Roman Empire - Pt 2: Stadium & Chariot Races, Walking The Text’s Brad Nelson examines the Greco-Roman obsession with games. There were Olympian games, Pythian games, Isthmian games, Nemian games, Caesarean games and more. Entire cities would empty on gameday leaving people’s homes vulnerable to thieves. Athletes became wealthy celebrities, fans rioted, and Herod the Great was voted president of the Olympic games for life!
Consequently, Paul’s writings are filled with references to the games. He frequently used the metaphor of a race to illustrate the Christian journey, emphasizing the need for discipline, perseverance, and focus. He encouraged believers to run with determination, striving toward the goal of spiritual maturity and eternal life, like an athlete who keeps their eyes on the prize, regardless of challenges.
In addition, Paul borrowed imagery from the violent world of chariot racing to describe the kind of focus followers of Jesus should bring to their lives. Racers were frequently thrown from their chariots in accidents called shipwrecks. To guard against this, racers would wrap the reins around their body. This forced them to strain forward toward the finish line, knowing that any movement, especially looking back at other racers would pull their horses off course.
