The Etihad was purpose built to end up the way it did. The structure of the lower seating bowl was already in place before the Commonwealth Games, but a temporary surface for the track and field was installed. After the games the lower bowl was ‘excavated’ before the second tier and roof canopy were completed (plus the later extension at one end).
Yeah, it was a great plan. Building like that from the outset prevented it from being a white elephant, gave Man City the new stadium they badly needed and saved tens of millions all-round.
The LA Coliseum also got rid of its track in order to lower the seating bowl. For the 2028 Olympics they plan to install a temporary platform to raise the field and accommodate a 400 m track.
I'm surprised you left Ohio Stadium off, especially with other college football stadiums on the list. Its track was removed as part of a major renovation in 2001.
That stadium is known as "The Big House" I think. Hail! to the Victors. At least as my memory serves me, I am a Canadian who hasn't watched college football in over 20 years! :)
@@neilwhitaker6284 - Oooh, Blasphemy! "The Big House" is Michigan Stadium, home of the University of Michigan Wolverines, and "Hail to the Victors" is the University of Michigan motto. Ohio Stadium, home of the Buckeyes of THE Ohio State University. The University of Michigan and THE Ohio State University are bitter rivals.
@@jsmith1746 Haha I got you! I was enganging in some banter trying to wind up some Buckeye fans ("THE Ohio State University"). I grew up in southern Ontario and Michigan was the closest big school near us so lots of us followed them back in those days. Syracuse Orangemen had a good stint in the mid-late 80s had an option QB named McPherson but I forgot the name for sure and I followed them too as they were closest big schools to me. edit: Bo Schembechler was the Michigan coach when I was into it and the Ohio State v Michigan games were really big along with Michigan v Notre Dame. edit: I had to look this up Syracuse Orangemen finished 11-0-1 in the 1987 season. They tied Auburn in the Sugar Bowl and finished the year ranked 4th in the AP polls. Don McPherson was the QB and finished 2nd in Heisman voting that year.
Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge had a track … wasn’t really used for track & field to my knowledge… but was used for greyhound racing, pitched battles with hooligans and as a car park on matchdays
First time commenting on your videos. Love the video, would have included la memorial coliseum especially with its interesting history of not only hosting football along with major league baseball
I’ve been to the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum twice. Once in 1984, and then again in 1991. In 1984, we went there to watch an AMA Supercross event. Before the Olympics, they had put a very sophisticated watering system, so the race track had to be built on the running track, with a section of the track going up into the stands, and down the Peristyle. My visit in 1991 was for a preseason game between the Raiders and 49ers. Is still has the track. I’ve been to Turner Field a few times to watch the Braves play. It was a nice stadium for baseball.
Los Angeles Memorial coliseum used to have track for track & field. It’s just a football 🏈 field. last summer, they removed the football 🏈 field, put NASCAR track for stock car 🚗 racing. then they removed the NASCAR track and put in a Rugby field. Then, put in football 🏈 field for USC’s season. They will put in a track & field for 2028 Olympics.
I think the original Ibrox stadium had a track to accommodate an upcoming World Championship for Mechanically Assisted Running, before Rangers moved in. And didn't Hampden Park have an athletics track for the 2014 Commonwealth Games? Don't forget the old Wembley - that place had a track for athletics. And speedway. And greyhound racing. No Egyptian goat wrestling, though.
Stanford Stadium is another major example of a stadium getting rid of its track and enclosing its stadium. Worst place I think the NFL ever held a Super Bowl.
Wallace Wade Stadium for the Duke Blue Devils. Only place to host a rose bowl outside of Pasadena before the CFPs changed that. Got rid of the track to lower the seating and add more ADA seating at field level.
The old Wembley had a running track which was also used for greyhound racing. Famously the owner of Wembley wouldn't cancel the dog racing during the 1966 World Cup so the planned game was played at the White City Stadium in West London. QPR also played there for a while The other notible one is the Red Bull Arena in Leipzig, where they just plonked the new stadium inside the old bowl.
Being in my 40s I definitely remember the days of a track at Kyle Field. As a kid I wondered and wondered as kids do what it was for since I was so young. The 80s . I miss the horseshoe. The metal bleachers in the sun for $15 to $50.
A lot of stadiums out there once had ‘em and no longer do. Soldier Field, Camp Randall, Ryan Field, Montreal Olympic Stadium, Edmonton Commonwealth Stadium are just a few that quickly come to my mind
He states pretty clearly that these were just ten examples, and that there's obviously lots more. You've not been excluded from anything except a completely arbitrary list.
Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow definitely should have been on this list. They removed the track and rebuild the entire seating area within the stadium's existing facade for the 2018 Fifa World Cup.
Olympic Stadium Montreal. They kept it when the Expos were playing until they renovated the stadium and the field at the end of the 80s. That was also when they removed the old running track from foul territory
Washington Huskies stadium hosted the Goodwill Games in the early 90s, an Olympic style games organized by American cable tv (I believe) that didn't catch on over the years. They built the new stands to look like the old ones they demolished I see on this video, cool stadium. Love the Stade Velodrome style.
i liked this video a lot. i want this series to keep going. I know los angeles memorial coliseum had a track a long time ago. then it moved to host football and baseball. and recently NASCAR! lol
Looking at this title makes me think of a local one, Exhibition Stadium, which went from: - A 1/3-mile paved oval (used for car racing at one point) with an infield that could be used for soccer and Canadian football (1948-1958) - A 1/4-mile track and Canadian football stadium (1959-1974) - A Canadian football and baseball stadium, with no track (1977-1989) - After removing the artificial turf, an oval track for stock car racing (1991-1999, when the stadium was demolished) Since 2007, it's been the home of a soccer specific stadium (BMO field), though it was modified in 2016 to support Canadian football by removing some of the stands.
I saw several Jays games there, terrible stadium but we had lots of fun. Caught a ball there one night or rather chased it down. I think it was George Bell who hit a long foul ball that hit a puddle just before the foul pole down the 1st base line and it skidded up into the bleachers and rolled WAY down way out past where people would watch and I ran after it. Also saw the Toronto Blizzard a few times there, most memorable was against Benfica in a summertime friendly.
@@lekkerkoffie8605 sorry you can't take a joke or perhaps because you don't speak English well you didn't understand I was complimenting a player that played for the clubs we support. Furthermore if I write "I think they should" that is not telling somebody what to do that is sharing an opinion but keep in mind it wasn't a serious suggestion it was a comment made for fun.
@@neilwhitaker6284 Kuyt was a good player but more a legend in Liverpool than in Rotterdam but you don't know that because you don't speak Dutch. As a personality we Feyenoorders are a bit done with Kuyt, that is why I was triggered to take your comment seriously. My bad. But without that background it would have been a great joke of course. Good job.
@@lekkerkoffie8605 As a personality we Feyenoorders are a bit done with Kuyt" OK sorry I didn't know that. I knew he finished his career there and assumed he was loved there too. That makes it not funny, I am sorry. When he was at Liverpool he wasn't the most talented but he worked so hard for the team.
