Jeff & Sarah revisit the legendary Michael "Mike" Tovey who guarded Wells Fargo and other stages in the Old West. Tovey was shot numerous times while guarding strongboxes against bad men and met his fate on the road between Ione and Jackson, California in 1893.
They will also visit the grave of the legendary expressman.

Wow Jeff, I can't believe how the locations you share are so intertwined with where I've lived my life. My sister lives in Ione and I've driven past that marker, but never stopped. Amazing how we drive over and past so much history that happened under our feet. If not for folks like you, who strive to keep our history known, most would never be aware of how we got here..Keep it up, love your work! Nice to see Sarah out and about with you, hope she is doing well.

Jeff, one of my favorite interest of California history is the stage coach robberies. One of the things I have found is that Wells Fargo did not send a "Shotgun" or messenger as you mentioned in this video, with the stage unless it carried valuable gold or other monies. Many experienced bandits learn this and would let a stage pass if it had no shotgun up top. Many want-a-be's coming up empty handed on the cash would get the US Mail sack, Bad mistake as then their robbery became a Federal Offense and much harsher penalty if caught. I recommend to anyone interested in California stage robberies to get the book Shotguns and Stagecoaches, The Brave Men who Rode for Wells Fargo. It has dated entries of early California Stage robberies. I do not remember the author right now but it is available on Amazon in Kindle and hard/soft cover books. This Video moves to the second place in your videos, second only to your video on Black Bart ! Thank you for your time, effort and expense in putting this video on here for us to enjoy. Bravo !

Great episode! Men like Mike Tovey had no hesitation when it came to pulling the trigger and killing another man. Robbers were after money and not necessarily killing people. It wasn’t a movie, it was real life. You would be hung at the nearest tree. … The cemetery is very cool. I know what you mean Jeff , when you are in an old cemetery it like stepping into the past. So much work and skill went into the head stones. Grave robbers, that’s creepy. Rich people back then wanted to be buried with jewelry. I guess human skulls were fun to have around. I’m looking forward to the next part of the episode. Thanks guys!

Great story on Tovey and the messengers! I've always found it interesting how these men inspired fiction writing of the old west and that's how we get the term 'riding shotgun!' The grave that had the nice ironwork was strange that it had a wooden marker. Someone had to have money in order to have that fence. I wonder if the marker and part of the fence was taken? Farley for instance would have certainly had a gate on fence. That would not have been cheap and yet there is no marker.

Local history, I live 8 miles above Jackson on HWY 88. I always wondered what was on that marker next to the highway. Did you know that Jackson had a thriving Chinese population? They had their own cemetery but it’s my understanding the remains were eventually shipped back to China. It might be worthwhile to research. Lotsa notables..actors and politicians visited Jackson. They even had gambling parlors on Main Street in the 30’s. And of course brothels. I wonder if Mr. Kirkwood has a connection with the ski area above Carson Pass and Kirkwood Meadows. Thank you! Can hardly wait for part two..
