We're gonna talk about the living legend that is Patti LuPone. Maybe you recognize her from the new Ryan Murphy series on Netflix, "Hollywood". But in nearly five decades, Patti has garnered a career that is nothing short staggering from, "Evita", "Les Miserables", "Sweeney Todd", "Gypsy", or "Company", Patti is one of the greatest talents of our time.

Great job with this. God, this makes you realize the breadth of her career, which I should know already since I've been a fan since her Evita days. I think the thing that distinguishes Patti LuPone from all others is she really performs like a superstar and has an incredible singing voice and is a natural actress, but there is something so earthy about her that we still believe she is a real person and we could even know her and be her friend. (She is also very open to communicating with fans - maybe that's it.) I do wish you'd included 01/10/09 - the night Patti stopped the show in the middle of her big finale to verbally destroy an audience member overtly taking pictures during the show. She demanded they be removed from the theatre before continuing and they supposedly were. Many disagreed with Patti's actions, many cheered. I personally believe she had every right to finally stand up and say what she and hundreds of actors have undoubtedly wanted to say thousands of times and but never do: "This my my work, and you're disrupting it. Stop!" Ironically, it is the widely heard bootleg recording itself of that incident that has etched the event into theatrical and LuPone-ical history, and I believe that short soundbite is as much a part of her legendary status as almost anything else.

Awesome job! Quick tidbit: part of the reason why the camera caught Reinking at the '76 Tonys was that Patti wasn't there. She was on the road with The Acting Company. Still, they could've shown a photo or something! It's like CBS went "Ah, one brunette is just like another."

Thank you so much for the kind words! I did wonder about why they didn’t catch her but in this interview she did in 2017 with Broadway.com, she mentions at the end the experience of being there in 1976. Which, again, just makes the whole mistake hilarious and odd: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nn_qzIKdv2U.html I love this stuff so much!!

I’m a long-time Patti devotee and, I must say, you did a stellar job researching her career and hitting the high points. The video clips and photos are beautifully chosen and collated. Consider me a new, enthusiastic subscriber. My theatre camp friend, Jane Ohringer was cast (at age 16) to play Peron's Mistress in the original Broadway company of EVITA (her sweet, lovely soprano can be heard singing "Another Suitcase In Another Hall" on the original cast recording). So, I made certain I would see Jane in this Broadway show, but I had only the slightest knowledge of the musical I was about to see or, most importantly, the lady I was about to experience playing the lead role. I'm actually not a huge fan of the show, but Hal Prince's staging was quite innovative at the time and really captured my young imagination as I'd never seen anything that looked like this musical before. And then there was this actress I'd never heard of playing Evita: Patti LuPone I was blown away - the quality and power of the voice, the vocal range that I had NEVER heard from a Broadway star, the incredible physical performance, and the level of acting I had seen only once before on Broadway (Angela Lansbury in GYPSY). I EVITA in early 1980, and by September I was a freshman majoring in musical theatre at Syracuse University. In June 1983, I came home for a few weeks before doing my first season of summer theatre and saw a few shows in NYC. One of those shows was THE CRADLE WILL ROCK, Off Broadway, at The American Place Theatre. When I sat down and opened my program I was excited to see that Moll (the prostitute) was being played by Patti LuPone. She amazed me again (Google Patti LuPone Cradle Will Rock “Nickel Under the Foot” to see Patti perform the song in the televised version). Beyond loving her performance, I recall being so impressed that after winning the Tony for best actress in a musical three years prior, she was doing this limited run Off Broadway production. It strongly implied this lady was craft oriented vs. career focused. Patti is one of the great Broadway stars. I’ve had the pleasure of also seeing her in PATTI LUPONE ON BROADWAY, THE OLD NEIGHBORHOOD, MATTERS OF THE HEART, SWEENEY TODD, GYPSY (once at Encores/City Center, twice on Broadway) and WAR PAINT. If you’ve not read her autobiography (Patti LuPone: A Memoir), I recommend it. Here is a low quality video of a high quality performance - “Rainbow High” during the run of EVITA. The LuPone vocals are full-powered, she drives the tempo at catch-me-if-you-can speed, fulfills the dramatic motivation completely, and is physically astounding, all while the men of the chorus help her change costume on stage, then earrings, gloves, purse, and fur stole. She then dismisses the men and brings it to a quick but thrilling end, including a short walk backwards (!) in the last moments. It’s diva playing diva at its finest. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-W9nbX2NY23Q.html

I loved seeing her in Anything Goes and in Gypsy. Would have killed to have seen her in Sunset Boulevard, front row for both. She is thrilling to watch, especially live. So happy that Ryan Murphy brought her to the show Hollywood- more please! And her concerts are incredible. As soon as it is a reasonable hour, I will be firing up her Les Mouches recording, so happy to learn about it here. She is both a legend and a gem. Great job on this video!!! ❤️

You said you like anecdotes. Here’s one, sourced from the Minneapolis gay grapevine. After Evita, Patti came to Minneapolis to do As You Like It at the Guthrie theater opposite Val Kilmer. The story goes like this: Patti went to the box office to cash a check, without any ID. The queen in charge refused because she had no ID. Patti protested “But I’m Patti Lupone!” “Patty Lou who?” was the queen’s droll response. Perturbed diva exists, end scene. I think “Patty Lou who?” every time I see her…by the way, I saw AsYou Like It at the Guthrie that year. She was great, but Val Kilmer in tights back then deserves its own video on your channel.

Thoughts on her notoriety as Yellow Diamond especially among the very internet-vocal SU fans? On one hand, I'm very proud of her trying out a role in animation-- truly a queen in any media. But on the other hand, as a fan way before SU was a thing, it gets very annoying and all her accomolishments seem trivialized and shoehorned into "mY dIaMonD". Idrk what to feel.
@modvavet
@modvavet 2 года назад
I mean, it was a role. For the theater geeks, it was a fun little experience. For the rest of us, it was an opportunity to hear from the theater geeks and learn who she is. I had never known about her before Steven Universe. Very likely still wouldn't know about her. So, it's priceless.
@martiflette
@martiflette 2 года назад
Yeah, the “my diamond” bit can be a bit annoying but on the other hand, it was thanks to Steven Universe that I discovered her, same thing for the singer Aimee Mann, and I truly love them both now. I think it’s great for people out of the USA to learn about amazing and talented artists like them, I would have never heard from them otherwise and I suppose that I’m not the only one (I’m french by the way).

Patti's comment about ALW hating women referred to the difficult range of the score, not the quality of the music. She was complimentary about the score of Evita and ALW. It was only after the Sunset experience that she started insulting his music. There is something disingenuous about Patti's post-Sunset comments about ALW and his work, likely coming from pain.
@davidhigginbotham2387
@davidhigginbotham2387 3 года назад
A couple of years ago, she insisted that ALW be the one to make cuts on "Don't Cry for Me Argentina," when Grammy producers insisted that a minute be trimmed from the song before telecast. I saw that as a sign of respect to the composer, regardless of their past differences.

Man, I remember when Patti said War Paint would be her last show....and then proceeded to join Company the following year. HAAAAHHH. I had the honour to see her live in 2018, and it was one of the greatest shows I've ever seen. She was so funny, and gracious to the people who were on stage with her, and still so LIVELY. I got to see Company while it was in London in 2018 and when Patti got to the "everybody rise" bit of Ladies who Lunch I realised I was crying. Like lots of tears just falling out of my eyes and running down my face. It was just overwhelming to be hearing THAT voice live, a voice pushing 70 with that kind of strength (I don't want to be patronising but that is unusual) performing with such passion, conviction and confidence in her powers but with a hint of vulnerability. It really was a magical moment and I can't believe how lucky I am.

This was true of all the stage musical greats from Merman and Channing to Mostel and Preston. For some performers the bigger the venue that needs to be filled, the bigger they seem to get to fill it. For these rare performers, any media that requires them to shrink in size, is not the best media to showcase their talent. Those are the ones born to stand on a stage.

I want to be able to show my students these female stage legends playing female legends, and who better to watch than Patti Lu Pone and Christine Ebersole?? War Paint also did not get the public justice it deserved. Someone important should make this dream a reality for all of us little people who cannot make such things happen.

You are absolutely right. It was my thought though, and still is, that a lot of the shows she did before the London revival of "Company" were short-lived and while she did great work, never really met the success she found in "Gypsy". This was my second episode and if I was a better writer then, I would have found a way to address that as well. If she does return to "Company" when Broadway opens up, I would definitely consider revisiting Patti's career and addressing the period I left out. Appreciate the feedback! Thanks and be well! xo

@@StagedRight of course. Thanks for being so kind, I just didn’t want to cut this “living legend”, as you perfectly put it, short!
