This is the third vehicle of mine I have installed this oil drain valve on. It has proven itself to me and is well worth the money as I do all my own vehicle maintenance. No, they did not sponsor this video, I spent my own hard earned cash on all three of them. I do believe in the product though.

THIS. THIS! keep the tips flowing! it got my own maintenance project reminders and tips flowing. hope this saves time and time again AND it reminds me of other stuff i need to keep maintaining so here are some quick tips (unrelated directly to the Stihlbus but for time savings and planning ahead ) **hope this video keeps being magnetic for other viewers also...well done....and i'm off to order one and give it a try as it will alleviate/prevent all types of mishaps. plus it's January so a good time of the year to plan ahead and not do the oil change til warmer weather's here...(no lift yet) not sure if they made that magnetic part yet would be great that first time to install that first time that is. a whole lot less part numbers to look up. and once i get that torque the first time, yep. **other projects to consider : one guy mentioned that there is an oil pan that contains a cooler. in past i bolted in a Jasper cooler to the front engine. wish i knew about the integrated cooler oil pan on another vehicle when i had to drop the oil pan after i had a shop (oops new guy overtightened the oil drain plug he's fired he did it for a few days you know like 90 to 180days before they reviewed the camera footage.100% of all those vehicles. oops) do the oil change during a summer road trip...DIY IYWIDRTJDIY. painful discovery 5k miles later and 24hrs downtime for the gasket seal to form. seeing your fire extinguisher is a good reminder to check mine and make sure they are properly filled. and each 10 years we just replaced the smoke detectors (now have a built in long lasting battery for ten years, not those change a 9volt each radnom time on Monday constant beeps at 2:00 A.M. a sschool night! requiring scaffolding or a tall ladder for a cathedral ceiling through an external window remove the screens nonsense avoided kind of inconvenience (get out towels to not scuff the window pane, put painters tape on the ladder to not scratch the wall paint, etc.). our smoke detectors now we made sure to get the integrated ones with the carbon monoxide dection at least one per floor. plus there's that toilet flapper i just changed and need to double check it today. some toilet shutoff valves check your code...and for convenience you might turn turn and turn and turn to turn on /off so get a 1/4-turn valve instead if need to replace when you replace. if there is a Stihlbus valve for toilets i haven't seen yet but if that normal toilet screw shutoff were to leak, it might be nice if the Stihlbus company could make one that self shutoff in case of a leak at the valve. and we never have to worry about a stuck shut screw valve that requires plumbing work each time...put there are sometimes ways to loosen that screw valve with a wrench very very carefully. etc. this gets this tinkerer thinking there may also be medical drain applications with tubing. especially alone or in combination with the flexible gumby type funnel materials and if they can keep their ability to change shape while still being thin enough and not any nuisance in contact with skin. etc. thanks again . this! this!!

good of you to share! gonna get one now. YES I CAN. now do oil changes at those frequent 3k intervals with 5k being the procrastination interval. thanks for removing some timely/slight obstacle, imho. not that anybody else finds the torque wrench adjustments a little slippery each time haha but it's one less obstacle eliminated.

Hey, nice to see an open mind. Your vacuum cleaner shtick is a nice trick. Nice low key sense of humor, and your pretty clear and informative. I worked at a machine shop in San Diego that did all the work for the city bus system, so I’ve seen a few good ideas before, never saw the vacuum one though. And if you are conscientious, you can avoid any risks from buildup or problems with the valve itself. Number one is to change the oil regularly (as you obviously do) and a careful solvent flush once in a while to the crankcase would further mitigate any crud build up. Finally, cleanliness is supreme when working on your car, so the advantages of the drain valve have many other pluses.

Now further simplify the process by draining your used oil directly into an empty oil jug rather than a drain pan. You can get a couple empty 5 quart containers from AutoZone, or anywhere that accepts used oil for recycling, to get started. Then whenever you do an oil change, you fill an empty one with used oil and retain the new one that you pour into the engine for the next oil change.

@5400bowen
@5400bowen 2 года назад
Yeah that is the next step to improving the scenario. I have an F250 diesel, and getting it up high enough is a real chore, even with two floor jacks and stands. A longer tube might do the trick though.
@douglasgreen437

Or you can by a 5L oil jug from Amazon for $9.99, pour the new oil into that & then put the hose straight into that...

Yeah if it sticks up into the oil pan crud can build up around the lip and the stuff will build up slowly over time. Even if you pull it out every 5-10 changes, that crud could build up and start to solidify. Sounds minimal, but over time and chunks could break loos.

I don't think the correct question is how long it takes to drain. I think the real question is how long it takes to clean up the inevitable oil splatter and spills. I haven't bought one (yet) but I've been looking for something exactly like this, so I'm going to buy one.

My concern (with any of these valves) is with the reduction of the opening - with a rapid flow, the flow provides some debris scavenging - and, if the threaded portion protrudes up into the pan, it would block its ability to fully evacuate the old oil.
@AGuyandHisProjects
@AGuyandHisProjects 3 года назад
That is indeed valid and something I thought about as well. I cam to the conclusion that I change my oil hot and ideally any debries will be caught up in the oil. If there are chunks big enough to not be caught in the oil then I figure I have problems bigger than an oil change will solve lol...I am no mechanic or engineer though

yup. flow restriction and it sticks out more than a simple plug, I'd be worried about it being ripped off. $44 to make the oil run slower? and another drain hose? no thanks.

For those who wondered what would happen if you took the car to a shop for an oil change (where they won't have the other piece of the system), and what I've seen is they would remove the part that's screwed into the oil pan just like a regular drain plug. Then you risk having them replace it with a standard plug, or damage the Stahlbus part when they reinstall it. In my humble opinion a better and less expensive system is a Fumoto drain valve that has a built in lever to turn a 1/4 turn ball valve. It's all one piece, and you can install a piece of tubing to the outlet nipple to direct the oil to your drain pan if you wish, but it's not required. A service department would have no problem using it as designed, and wouldn't need to remove it from the pan. I've been using Fumoto valves on all my four wheeled vehicles for a couple decades now, with zero problems and no mess. Now if someone could invent a foolproof way to change the oil filter, the entire process could become mess free. One method I've tried comes close if you have the right type of filter setup (hanging straight down) and sufficient space. Loosen the filter slightly with your filter wrench, then pull a heavy weight plastic bag up over the filter. A freezer bag is one possibility. Now unscrew the filter the rest of the way by hand and remove it while inside the bag. Still get a few drips, but not a big mess.

Thanks for the comment! For the oil filter some guys invented this thing. I forget what it is called but something to the effect of "oil udder" I think. I have a couple, they are pretty cool

Great how to video! Simple, blunt and to the point. I’ll have to look into this product myself now. However what do you do about not spilling oil all over the place when removing the filter? My Nissan Sentra filter is mounted horizontally, and using just a car jack I can’t get both me and the pan under it so I get a nice drizzle on myself before I move and put the pan under haha.
@AGuyandHisProjects
@AGuyandHisProjects 5 лет назад
I have a 2014 sentra and filter is mounted vertically...makes it so much nicer haha! However on my 2006 frontier the filter is horizontal as you mention. For that they sell a "flexible funnel." I use the crap out of that thing for just such issues...I will look for a link. And thanks for the compliment on the video!

@@AGuyandHisProjects ........Looking at that flexi funnel I was like .....sweet idea. Could use one around the garage & or vehicle tool box. Then it struck me ! Looks pretty much like a short version of a "Sam Splint" ....... I have plenty of those around. Maybe a little narrower, but hey. Just an observation, & food for thought to get the gears turning....... Also.....others have thought that the threads go into the pan far enough to possibly impeded complete draining and maybe leave a little sludge behind. Thoughts ?
@AGuyandHisProjects
@AGuyandHisProjects 4 года назад
@@backcountryoverland103 thanks for your thoughts! I have no idea what a "sam splint" is lol. I'll have to look it up. As for the sludge issue, i run the vehicle for a good 10-20 minute drive prior to changing the oil. This allows any sediment to get caught in the oil and drain. If it is sludgy enough to not get mixed up with the oil then you have much larger problems that a drain plug isn't going to solve. My opinion only.

Hey, Love that wet vac trick, never would have thought of that. Any specific suction power needed, or is it just more of a "constant suction" mechanic that prevents it from draining? I have a mini-wet vac, not very powerful, but it works for small jobs. Also, Is it really safe to only have the valve in at 18 ft-lb? My OEM drain bolt on my prius C is 28 Ft-lb's, so that's 10 ft-lb's lower than what Toyota recommends. Cheers!

Thanks for watching! As far as the vacuum question I have used a regular house vacuum and it worked just fine as well. I do not know how much vacuum you need...give it a try and let me know! Haha. As far as the torque goes, the drain valve on the package specified what they wanted it torqued to. I have the valve on all three vehicles now and zero issues so I am comfortable sticking with what the package claimed. Yes I am in the same boat as well as all three of those vehicles manuals call for a higher torque spec than the drain valve package

@@AGuyandHisProjects I might teflon tape mine just to be safe. Help make it more "snug" and vibration/leak proof. I saw a few reviews about how the crush washer does not always do a good job depending on the vehicle. Cheers fir replying.
