I use c2 gaurd all the time, it's got a great look, but seems like it's needs an annual coat or at leaste every 2 years. Do you know any product that looks as nice but is more durable?

It’s the old way. Makes the fence last forever too. You can drill a 45° hole in the post and pour oil on there periodically as well. Just make sure to plug the hole between fills

I believe I’m not a bad craftsman (elevator union + electrical/communications union), and I feel like the way you teach is spot on. You don’t get all hung up on technical terms and explain things in a very nonchalant way. I love your videos, and I’m not afraid to say it!!! Hahaha

Use Ready Seal and apply as much or as little as you want as long is it’s covered, no runs, completely even finish. Good stuff.

Pro tip: if it’s pressure treated, only oil base stain. If it’s not pressure treated, STILL only use oil based stain.

@@gbengoosewuru4139 I’d say you’d be fine to stain whenever. If you wanna give it a week in the sun to cure up a bit that’d be playing it safe (sometimes hot sun will bleed a little extra sap out of the wood) but you oughta be good to stain. If the pressure treated wood has that blue/green algae that treated wood sometimes has on it you can mix up 1/4 bleach and water and rinse it off too and it should be good to go.

I put mine in a pump up sprayer. My dad would use old motor oil and diesel fuel mixed with copper tox and spray his posts and wood fences. They're still there, he isn't.

Water-based stain is fine for furniture. You have to put a water sealer on a fence or deck after the water-based stain dries, so you should just use oil stain. You should put a clear coat over furniture with water based stain as well. Oil and moisture from your skin will damage the wood if it isn't sealed.

water-based stain designed for exteriors has sealer in it already. just make sure it is designed for exteriors and not furniture or interiors specifically.

@@pantrokrator8310 no you don’t, you just need the right stain. I spray thousands of feet of fence every year. You need a true oil, not these cheap form filming products. Google “Stain and Seal Experts” and look into that to see what I mean

Ive been staining in the Ottawa area for 20 years now and although that fence looks relatively new it still had a layer of weathering grey wood fiber that should of been cleaned or sanded to optimize the look of the stain.

How often do you need to reapply an oil based stain? Looking for low maintenance, something I don't have to do every year😅 my wood fence goes all the way around 1/2 acre.

Put water on the fence. If it soaks in it needs more if it beads up you're good. Recheck 1-2 times per year. I like to reapply in late summer.

If you drip , those drops will penetrate to lower sections. By the time you coat the lower sections, those drops will telegraph through the finish. If you coat bottom up, and drip, it can easily be brushed in, no tell tale signs. Just my experience

@terrapinjonathan. If you're seeing drips it mean you're applying to heavily. Also if it's absorbing and darkening under drips you need only apply more stain which will darken everything to match your drips. Long story short use more stain. Or be careful not to drip.

Because “water base” is very thin and will run down. So trying to brush upwards with a water base will make ur job harder and messy

It depends on the moisture content of the wood. Either buy a cheap moisture meter or guess. If the wood is heavy it is too wet. Let it dry and stain in late summer.

If you are sanding your fence you're wasting time. Unless you really care about the finish do not sand. The boards come from factory pre sanded...usually. it's up to you tho. A sanded finish will absorb less stain and less water so...😊

I’m going re-stain my deck but can’t I just use a power washer to get the small layer of mold off and then stain it? Do I absolutely have to sand it too?

For deck tops yes you should sand it. Use a 6 inch variable speed orbital. Start at 60 to 80 grit and finish with 120 or 150 max. It goes pretty quick.

So you’ve got the face, but not the edge or the top of the bottom When I did my fence I sanded and painted all the boards before I put them up and that was using Behr stain and it still did not last at five years they claim
