It depends on every piece! There is no set answer unfortunately, you have to base it on strength, look, glass type etc and make the best educated choice!

oh yea you absolutely have to burnish the foil before you solder!

Hello! If your having any gapping, I would say you need to go back to the cutting and grinding step and really perfect that. You shouldn't have any gaping between your pieces, it will loose all its strength. But my soldering video goes over everything for making that perfect bead, and just practicing! It takes years to perfect this art! Just keep going with it!

Very very rarely do i. Only for much larger, mainly foiled panels. And you legit just wedge that bitch between the foil! I can put this on the list for upcoming videos though! (I will say i most of the time don't find it necessary.)

Well, that's normal. As annoying as it is to hear, "practice makes perfect." There is no one size fits all solution for these types of things beyond just practicing and figuring out what it is that you are doing specifically, that's leaving you with these larger gaps. Remember, some gap-ing is not only unavoidable but needed for the strength of the piece. You don't want every single piece wedged together, so tightly you're risking breaking your glass every time you fit your design together. If you have these catastrophic gaps, go back remake those pieces, lay it on top of your stencil, try to figure out where you went wrong or move forward with the gaps, filling those gaps with 50/50 solder and then laying your bead work with 60/40. Then, move on to the next project. Repeat until you get better and better and better. I always tell everybody this art takes years to master. So the more hours you put into it, even if it's 10 minutes every single day, the better you're gonna get. That's just the reality of this type of art.

It's all going to be what you deem works best. We all make glass differently, so it's totally up to you. I am self taught, so I know half of people agree with me and the other half do not. Lol!! Question: The edges of my glass chip when grinding. Do I need a new grinder bit or am I holding my glass wrong?

You could be pushing too hard, or you need a softer grit bit. So a coarse bit, on iridescent glass, its just going to chip. Try a softer bit first, see if that does the trick. ♡

Hello, thank you so much! I would really strive to only have one layer of foil down, evenly on your first go. If you have multiple layers around all your work, it will decrease the strength in which your bead builds and hugs your edges, especially if your foil ledge sits on top of another layer. If your really struggling with keeping your foil even I would step back and simply just practice foiling some junk glass, and experimenting with different size foil! Hi Mark! If the foil isn't sticking, even after soldering, something is wrong. Either the glass is not ground, cleaned, wrapped or burnished properly. Small thing like the oils on your fingertips can affect the stick of that copper foil. Making sure your glass edges are properly ground, cleaned and free of any oils before wrapping is number 1. Burnishing as good as possible. Number 2, do not hold your iron on the foil so long that it starts to melt the adhesive on the copper foil. 3 could also be not creating a proper bead on your edge. If the foil has been prepped and applied properly, the only other thing can be that your not building a bead, after tinning all your foil edges. Hope this helps!

I do not! I mainly use 7/32 black backed! It's all on whatever you want the look to be and strength needed!

Unfortunately it does not, once you burnish that small patch it very much is one with the layer underneath it. So keeping those patches small and too a minimum is a must!

So if you can't make a cut in the design, you'd have to use a ring saw! Like the zephyr or taurus that's on my channel.

Thank you! It all depends on outside factors, all foil tends to oxidize differently, if I HAVE to keep a foiled piece for a week or two, ill keep it out of the sun, tucked away in a dark drawer. You want to solder as quick as you can, foil is not meant to be its on edging. Not only for oxidation but separation, wear and tear, you want to solder asap!

Hello! I'm so sorry I didn't see this until now, good ol youtube didn't notify me! BUT yes all the areas on your edges need to become opaque and even. Half shiny means un-ground on half. So anywhere its still shiny, smooth or sharp didn't make contact with the grinder. Most likely a bit placement issue unless its not consistent in where the contact is or isnt being made, if that makes sense. Grinding the edges will make your piece fit better as well as make for better foil adhesion, so even if the foil stuck, I would suggest getting those edges ground evenly! Hope this helps! And as for spectrum, yes, but as they are now based out of the country, when we do start seeing there iridescent again, not only will it take longer, but they are only bringing back the "most popular" shades, and all only in fusible. AKA more expensive, and for those of us that don't often fuse, for no reason. BUT they are bringing some back, so ill take it lol . Last year I was told end of 2020 to start to expect to see some rolling out, hopefully rona didn't prolong that.

It's totally dependent on the piece. I wouldn't even particularly do this anymore to be totally honest. Beyond patches. Just use the correct sized foil.

Not now. However thats absolutely something thats happened to me before, when I first started. If the foil is not properly applied and burnished on a CLEAN, oil/ glass mud free surface, it can and will absolutely lift. Then, if your not building a proper bead up and just tinning those edges, they will always lift and fall apart. Lastly, if you hold your iron on one area to long, it can absolutely melt the copper foil adhesive, rendering it useless. Need to remove that foil and do it again. I no it sucks but forcing yourself to start that area over will really help with learning the do's and dont's. Use some wire cutters and peel back those foil edges, scrub nice and good with clean soapy water and re apply new foil. Tin that edge quickly, then build that bead up strong. You want to be able to really scrub all your foil edges and have no lifting issues. Hope this helps!

ohhhh ok I'm sorry I didnt realize you were looking for a specific, directional answer. OK SO, because your just starting I would absolutely suggest getting 1/4 inch foil, while your still learning to keep all those edges even. The thinner it gets, the harder it gets. So those numbers is based on inch. So something like 7/32 is going to be super thin, giving BARELY any overlap over the edge of your glass. As far as a foiler, I wouldnt even bother to be honest. Unless your not ever going to cut shapes besides a perfect square or circle, it's not really helpful. Having your roll of foil on your desk is just as easy, I think anyway. Of coarse alot of this is all going to be personal preference, as you get to know your own technique! As far as glass, I NEVER buy online. From big retailers anyway. After shipping and there inflated prices, its absolutely insane. I would definitely give google a visit and see if you have any local stained glass stores, not only because of selection, but the owner I'm sure will be willing to share some knowledge! I’ve lived in three different cities since I started doing SG and I located a local stained glass artist in all three places and they all have sold supplies to me. They’re always buying large amounts bc they use so much, so it’s no problem to buy from them. The one I buy from now actually sells and has a large selection of glass and supplies,...anything I could ever need as a hobbyist.

Ok so if the edges are lifting its 1 of two things. Oil is being transferred to the glass somewhere. Be it your natural oils from your fingertips, or the cleaner your using after grinding. You would be SHOCKED at the small amount of oils that can cause that issue. Go back through EVERY step of the process to eliminate foreign oils on the glass edge. If it TRULY isnt that, then its an iron/solder that is too hot. Turn that temperature down until your in that sweet spot. I am reluctant to say its the foil because that is a more slim chance. Unless your using years old foil thats been oxidizing in the air. Hope this helps! (I can do a vid too) 🖤 Any basic foil from Amazon should be just fine. Well, that's tough to say. If they are lifting it would be because they weren't burnished enough, edges weren't sufficiently cleaned (even oils from fingertips can mess that up), soldering iron too hot, and more. If the glass is too thick for that particular size foil, then you need to go up a size. Hope that helps!! Trial and error, paying attention to the small things.

Oh no! Thats Definitely a foil issue. Something is preventing a proper adhesion. Whether that be outside factors like to much oil from your fingers, crappy foil, not clean enough glass etc. Go back to your pre foiling stage and make sure all work surfaces/hands/glass is clean as can be before foiling. Also double check the integrity of your foil. No signs of oxidation or warping!

I would not recommend it. That layer is going to create a weak point. The only time layering is ok is to do a very small split patch or something. The foil needs to be "suctioned" to the glass when it's soldered in a sense. So layering foil would be like painting on top of walls covered in clingwrap. Does that make sense?

Hmm, if they fit together perfectly before then they should after as well. You need to push the foiled pieces together pretty hard to get them to sit nice and tight again.

Ok yes, its tough to say without seeing it but generally with unstable pieces like that is when you need to add backup strength. Even copper reinforcement strips for stained glass.
