Hi Kim, You are my go to for the best instruction and product information on this topic hands down! Do you ever find an instance/certain conditions to use a pre-stain conditioner to help the stain go on evenly or is it basically just a waste of time and money?
@BorninaBarnBoutique
@BorninaBarnBoutique 3 года назад
Thank you so much! 😀 so I don’t typically use pre stain conditioners - I have I just don’t see the big need for them most the time. You can also use mineral spirits as a slip coat if you want, it basically does the same thing.

Great tutorial video! Thank you. Question, I have a solid wood mahogany chest that a client/friend wants stained gray. What can I do to avoid the natural red wood showing through?

Hello Kim, Great teaching video! Wondering if you could recommend another festool system a little less expensive as just starting out;) Thank you, Patrice.

Unfortunately most of the festool products are on the costly side. You could hook up to a shop vac, I used to do that before I got my festool.

Do you ever use wood conditioner to prevent botching especially softer wood like pine
@BorninaBarnBoutique
@BorninaBarnBoutique 2 года назад
I have. You can also use mineral spirits as a slip coat which acts like a pre stain wood conditioner

Haha, when you said don’t press the tack clothes too hard, I was like yeah that’s me... I used it the first time on my painted surface and I probably pressed too much, omg, what a mess. The surface became so sticky and it just attracts more debris 😅

Do you ever use a preconditioner to prevent blotching? Thanks.
@BorninaBarnBoutique

I have - but it is not a necessary step with all wood species. Harder woods sometimes can have a harder time taking the stain and imparting to the wood evenly. I don't use often though, I sand extremely well and just go for it. In all the pieces (over a 1000) I have refinished - I would say I have had to use pre stain conditioner a dozen times.

Thanks for the quick reply! I got burned on the first piece I ever tried to stain and now I am nervous. I can't tell one piece of wood from another, so I am nervous about not preconditioning just in case.

Can you use that same topcoat for a chalk painted dresser? Thank you for the video. It’s very helpful.
@BorninaBarnBoutique
@BorninaBarnBoutique 2 года назад
You can use water based topcoat for chalk or other paint types, just be aware that any topcoat can yellow whites, so proceed with caution on white.

@BorninaBarnBoutique
@BorninaBarnBoutique 2 года назад
@@susanc1179 I like to use an all in one that has a top coat built in, fusion, Dixie Belle silk, melange one, none need additional topcoats

@@BorninaBarnBoutique This is a good idea. I have to figure out how much water to add to be able to spray with my Wagner 3000. I tried a Joanna Gaines brand today using a roller and brush. It dried so fast, it ended up a mess. Beginner’s trial and tribulations. 😂 Thanks so much for answering my questions.

Thank you Kim for this great info! I just stripped the bottom of that old radio cabinet that you and I talked about during my lesson-thankfully it didn’t have too much paint on it-and then I sanded after. A few Q’s for you-if I am staining legs of a piece that are quite curvy and intricate, would you suggest using those round sponges like you showed as an option for a non-sprayed top coat? Or would you still use the foam brush? Also, how long do you suggest leaving each coat of stain on before wiping back? Appreciate your tutorials as they are a huge help to this hobbyist!
@BorninaBarnBoutique
@BorninaBarnBoutique 3 года назад
Great! The round sponges are great, I would use those. It depends on the stain you are using, water based is right away, Varathane one hour is 2-3 min, gel is right away. So check your stain can information.

Thanks for this great video! I’m working on restoring an antique mantle and I’m hoping that I will be able to stain it once all the years of paint n old stain is removed - it’s in rough shape but really hoping I’ll be able to stain it for it’s final look. Have a great day Kimberly 🥰

why dont u use gel stain? it is usually 1 coat and so much easier. i use a foam roller for my top coats and it is a flawless finish as well.
@BorninaBarnBoutique
@BorninaBarnBoutique 3 года назад
I have and they have a longer dry time in between coats and total before you can topcoat. I use a water based topcoat and over oil based gel stained you have to wait 72 hours to clear. They also are not always one coat, that depends on the wood species your working with. Herder woods take more coats for coverage. They also set very quickly so in dry hot temps gel stain is not ideal. Just a preference I guess 😀
