I make leather products in my spare time, mostly bags, backpacks and small items like wallets and card-holders. I am still learning a ton every time I take on a new project and always appreciate feedback on my creations.a
For the moment I don't take orders as I like to spend too many hours getting the finished product as good as I can : this means that if I were to sell these bags, the selling price would be way more than the bags are worth due to the hours of work involved.
As always, do let me know what you think of this creation and this video. If you have any tips or comments about the techniques used, please let me know by dropping a comment below this video :)

I have tried this myself, but was much more successful. I ground my own dark roast coffee beans and soak the coffee beans and the leather in the same container at the same time like a cold brew. I got a really nice dark brown rich color and no crystallization. It works pretty well, I have also tried Soy sauce and while it worked I could not for the life of me get that damned smell out.
@JamesBerry
@JamesBerry 4 года назад
Hahah, I can bet that smell was really annoying by the end, though the idea of using soy sauce does sound quite clever, seeing how potent it is at staining. I'm a bit pissed that I didn't think to try it the way you suggested - I have some old coffee beans lying around and will definitely try your method in the future. How long did you leave the leather to soak for?
@glitchlife4639
@glitchlife4639 4 года назад
@@JamesBerry 24 hours, and be careful what coffee beans you use. Coffee comes in Blond, medium, and dark roast all of which will give you a different degree of pigmentation and radically change the color. This is one of the reasons why using something like filtered coffee doesn't really work as 9 times in 10 your getting a blond to medium roast from store bought coffee. Look for a French, Italian, or an Espresso roasted coffee bean, which are all traditionally dark.

@@glitchlife4639 Someone has also recommended using "spent" coffee grains after I've had my coffee... I would love to know your input on that.
@lifeofsanai7051
@lifeofsanai7051 4 года назад
@@JamesBerry I dont think that would work, the reason being is the stain would loose a large amount of its potency in the brewing process and wouldn't allow you to really get the color your looking for. I like the idea, as it provides an alternative use to recycle your beans and you get more out of your product, but I am wary when it comes to reusing such things for expensive leather. You could theoretically isolate the color compounds using a home made distillation setup to concentrate the coffee (Example here s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com/courses-images-archive-read-only/wp-content/uploads/sites/53/2014/08/19210630/20140811155007086898.png ) but that seems a lot more trouble then its worth tbh. instant coffee stiffens the leather too much and makes it crack

Try again but don't use hot water in the coffee. Use room temperature water and that might help with the initial stiffness and brittleness

James Berry Leathercraft I tried something similar not too long ago however the the leather started smelling unpleasant, almost like cigarettes. Did you notice a negative change in smell using this process?
@JamesBerry
@JamesBerry 4 года назад
No, for me it's mainly a pleasant leather & coffee smell. Though when I added the Saphir renovateur the smell became more chemical and less pleasant. It's not bad now though, but you can still smell the wax from the Saphir product which is a bit odd when combined to coffee.

I've never tried to stain leather with coffee, but you will probably have much better results if you use a mordant like alum sulphate, as well as a softener like cream of tartar. You will have better color absorption and can reduce the time of the leather in the coffee mixture.

I made this a long time ago and would now recommend a very different method for coffee staining. I would now recommend you put coffee in a mason jar with water (preferably coffee-dregs so you can enjoy drinking the good stuff first), plunge in the leather piece making sure it is submerged in the water, and close up the jar letting the leather sit in the coffee infusion over the course of a few days.

It probably would work well, but I wonder if simply letting the leather sit in a solution of water and ground coffee wouldn't be better as the instant coffee seemed to add in a ton of sugar and left the leather needing a lot of cleaning.

Hi Bertrand, I've found it's quite stable over time and haven't noticed any significant change in color or bleed onto other items. Protecting it with a good wax really helps I think.

Is this dye not removed after wiping it with a wet cloth? I also have an experience. I dyed vegetable leather with the natural dye of beetroot, but it is not stable, and when I wipe it with a wet cloth, it comes off. Is there a way to install the natural dye? Thank you
@JamesBerry

To be certain your dye will not come out or rub off, you need to seal your dye into the leather, using a special leather sealant or good hard wax.

I've started using eco-flo waterstain and I'm having trouble getting consistent colors. Do you always oil the leather with neatsfoot before you apply the water stain and do you apply any finish? Either way, thanks for sharing this coffee staining guide!
@JamesBerry
@JamesBerry 4 года назад
I also used to have a lot of trouble getting consistent colours (and still do)... all I can suggest is a lot of trial and error and also to dilute your dies so you can add in several coats until you reach the desired colour. I always add neatsfoot oil or wet slightly beforehand as I believe this helps absorb the dies in a more natural way (though this is just my gut feeling and I may be wrong... still learning).

I want to stain a real leather product, it's lightly stained though in it's pictures online it was darker in colour and evenly stained. It's a sling bag, it might happen that the person I am supposed to gift it to spills water or something on it, so my question is should I dye it with this method or some other way?
@JamesBerry
@JamesBerry 3 года назад
If you're not sure how this will last long term (and that's important to you) I would recommend using alcohol based dies and a good coat of protective wax. I have a tutorial on dying leathers here if you want: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-sejh2V_eJfs.html
@asmi227

@@JamesBerry thanks a lot james, I care because that bag is a gift and it won't be mine to take care of it so if the dyes come off due to any reason the person I'll gift it to would think that I gifted him something cheap, which is not true, it's good leather, still the staining didn't came like it should have been like it was shown in the product's picture.
@JamesBerry
@JamesBerry 3 года назад
@@asmi227 Whatever you do make sure to use acetone to remove anything that could be on the surface. This will dry out the leather but allows the dye to really penetrate evenly. And always test on a small area that's not visible first (when possible).

@JamesBerry
@JamesBerry 3 года назад
