The famous ruined building where Sergeant Pavlov and his men held out next to the Volga in 1942. The statue of Mother Russia, one of the biggest statues in the world, pointing her sword west to liberate the conquered land.
The river, the Volga, is about a mile wide here. I saw it north of Moscow in Yaroslavl 800 miles north and it was still a big river there. The east bank across the river was where the Russian reinforcements came in by boat during the night. The average life expectancy in Stalingrad was 24 hours. German assault engineers took drugs to cope with the insanity of the battle.
One of the streets right next to the giant river, the Volga, is named after a Russian elite Guards division that sent its c.10,000 men across the river in the night in order to save the city from being taken by the Germans. The elite infantry division went straight into combat from landing and damaged the German assault teams so badly that they lost their strength to attack. The street is named after this elite division so these incredibly brave young men are not forgotten. The c.10,000 Russian, Mongol and Kazakhstan soldiers basically all died in close combat in the ruins.
If in 2024, our idiotic politicians who never do any fighting themselves and live in luxury, want a war with Russia with our 18 year old boys going there, it will be a horrific meat grinder like WW1 or WW2.
It is not Iraq or Afghanistan. It is an ex-superpower with advanced weapons in lavish quantities, 150 million people and huge industrial capacity for military production.
The US has not faced an opponent of this size since WW2 and that was towards the end of the war when 90% of German casualties were on the Eastern Front in Russia. Only 10% of German soldiers died in Western Europe against the US, Canada and UK.
By D-Day in the summer of 1944, once the Allies were ashore in strength they were facing second rate German units short of everything who were nowhere as strong as in the early war. The vast majority of the best German troops especially their panzer elite died in Russia and the Ukraine.
Politicians, with their giant egos that they are gods, need to have an immediate ceasefire then sit down together and reach some form of peace treaty. The whole madness will just end in some form of peace treaty anyway, so why not do it now?
The war continues for the "donors" in Washington such as "defence" companies, giving money to US politicians in return for favours,, that make billions from this with arms production. That is why there are so many new mansions being built around Washington.
Even in Korea, there was only a ceasefire agreed and no peace treaty and that has held since the 1950s.
