Stallone's 90’s Action Trifecta: Cliffhanger, Demolition Man, and The Specialist

In the early nineties, Sylvester Stallone made an ill-advised detour into comedy with Oscar and Stop, Or My Mom Will Shoot. Surely, a comeback was in order, and Stallone delivered - big time. In 1993 and 1994, Stallone put out an action trifecta consisting of Cliffhanger, Demolition Man and The Specialist, all of which are considered iconic classics in his filmography. In this deep dive, we'll examine how this trilogy took Stallone from the Italian Alps, to patrolling the streets of San Angeles with a young Sandra Bullock, to steamy showers with Sharon Stone, in an action triple threat for the ages.
Which of these three Stallone classics is your favorite? Let us know in the comments!

I was ten when my dad and I saw Cliffhanger and Demolition in the theater that year. We had such a blast. This was the era of Arnold, Sly, Willis, Van Damme, and Seagal. Anytime one of these guys had a flick out at the movies, my dad and I were there. It was a great time to be an action movie fan. I can't help but miss those days. We had cool, macho bad ass heroes we could look up to, that weren't super heroes. Just old-fashioned tough guys who were always game for saving the day.

Cliffhanger was a part of our families home video collection when I was a kid, so it got quite a few re-watches. It's certainly one of the best "Die Hard on a" films of the 90s.

I am only 22 but my aunt is a Nerd and one of my favourite movies as a kid was Stallone's Oscar! I L.O.V.E this comedy, everything in this movie is in perfectly sync with Mozart's "Il Nozze de Figaro". I have also realized a lot of hints for Pop Culture. In "Last Action Hero" Arnold Schwarzenegger say when hearing Nozze de Figaro on the Radio that "This music is lovely". And in the same movie he carried Lio the Fart the same way Stallone did with one of the hostages in the opening scenes of Demolition Man. Maby I see connections where there aren't some but I fell so thrown back into my childhood with all these movies right now.

i loved Demolition man, it was panned by critics but so relevant today. Plus it was Rocky vs Blade. Snipes chews up the screen and gives an over the top villain performance that was on the level of jim carrey and tommy lee jones in Batman forever. Which is funny because the music for Demolition man was done by Elliot Goldenthal who did Batman Forever.

Yeah I love the Opening Line from Sly "Okay Let's do it." This is my all time favourite & his Chemistry with Kurt Russell (originally was supposed to be Arnold Schwarzenegger) is really superb especially the famous FUBAR line which clearly inspired Arnie for his New Netflix series.

In all 3 films reviewed here, each one had a scene stealing villain who clearly was having a blast playing the role (Lithgow - Cliffhanger, Snipes - Demolition Man, and Woods - The Specialist). A movie's always interesting when the hero has to face an imposing antagonist

I discovered Demolition Man almost by accident. My family had joined the Columbia House VHS subscription service in '94 or '95, and Demolition Man was one of the first movies we received. It's an homage to the dystopian novel "A Brave New World" while also a sly (hehe) satire of the action movie genre that Stallone himself had become synonymous with.

Simply a great action movie. I really can't imagine what this would look like if it was given the 'Ghostbusters' treatment. Also, Northern Exposure. A much forgotten 'must see' series of the 90's. Peace All

Out of this trifecta Cliffhanger is my preferred favourite, with Demolition Man coming in a close Second and The Specialist last in 3rd Place as Sly is Michael Douglas and the eroticism doesn't really suit him. Cliffhanger has a lot of great action and is a really one of the better Die Hard clones. Also along with Tango & Cash is one of the better Non Rocky or Rambo movies. Hang On.

No it wasn't : the said individual was Simon Crane - who doubled for Timothy Dalton, Kevin Costner, Mel Gibson and Pierce Brosnan et al - who performed the transfer, Titanic and Saving Private Ryan are Crane's long list credits. As for Demolition Man, it could have been Ken Bates (Stunt Coordinator on Bad Boys, performer on Predator 2, Rambo 3 and countless others) or Mark DeAlasandro, one of Stallone's many stunt doubles.

Those three movies weren't too bad. The week went out of it was the specialist. If you're really think about the movie, there are plot holes everywhere and it doesn't really make sense on face value. But cliffhanger and demolition man. Those are two of the most underrated action movies of the '90s. I'll give Stone credit when it comes to action. He likes to be super diverse

Yet when Snipes was in Major League, they had to slow down his running sequences to mask the fact that he was so slow, and they couldn't include footage of him catching or throwing a baseball, because he was terrible at both. This is the guy that literally sobbed and begged Tyson to not hit him in the face.

I was 14 when Cliffhanger came out, 15 when Demolition Man debuted, and 16 when the Specialist was in theaters. I thought Stallone had more hits in him for the rest of the decades. Sadly, Assassins bombed, he made an underappreciated Daylight, an overlooked Copland, and an ignored Driven.

Yeah I was and still am a huge Stallone fan. As a kid post Demolition Man it began the serious downturn in his career.. You mentioned some of them. The Specialist was a pretty bad movie, on paper they had something but it was executed terribly. Judge Dredd was a mess. I saw that one opening day in a nearly empty theater.. After Daylight bombed in 96 Sly was no longer a bankable star...

Cliffhanger was a true return to form for Stallone when it comes to action, Demolition Man was a disgrace and Specialist remains his sexiest thriller to date mostly due to Sharon, who was at her peak. The rest of the 90s was abysmal and hence he went off the radars for almost a decade before Rocky Balboa.
