WTF Happened to BRUCE WILLIS?

In our latest WTF series, we take a look at some of our favorite stars and filmmakers who have seemingly disappeared or altered their careers over the years to the point that begs the question; WTF happened? Now, before you think we're just picking on celebrities or running some gossip rag stuff, think again! We take a fun (and sometimes funny), researched and fair approach, looking at all angles that led our subject to wherever they are now (which isn't necessarily a bad place at all). If anything, it answers the question of where these fine folks went, how they got there, and where you can find 'em now.
There's no doubt that Bruce Willis ranks with the greatest movie stars of all time. From his time as the fast-talking private eye on "Moonlighting" to his breakthrough in DIE HARD, through his more dramatic turns in PULP FICTION, THE SIXTH SENSE, and more, he's the best of the best. But, in recent years his output has been filled with disposable, DTV junk where his roles are supporting at best, and often unworthy of his talent, a fact he seems to realize given his listless performances. So let's take a look at how Willis got here, and how despite everything, there are still flashes of the old Bruce Willis in movies like GLASS and LOOPER.

Bruce, you were an icon for generations. People loved, laughed, cried and were at awe at the movies you were in. Now go enjoy your retirement. Thanks for being the awesome Bruce Willis we had, have and always will aspire to be ourselves. Sincerely, The entire action movie fandom.

He has had really weird career likely due to his own decisions. It's like he knows he can pull off more interesting nuanced characters and does it now and again. But he can't help but want to do more "tough guy bad as*" movies which inevitably leads him to misjudge projects and pick some real crap scripts that end up putting him on the downswing. Especially in the last decade or so. He seems way to wrapped up in being a crotchety "tough guy". Probably doesn't help that it's all he's done for awhile now and it's his legit real life personality, so those are the only roles he gets offered anymore.

@sam_the_man
@sam_the_man 3 года назад
@@scottknode898 I found out everything I needed to know about him when he did an interview for BBC Radio 1 a few years ago to promote a movie. The DJ even had to explain before they played the recording that they are aware that for a celebrity to sit in a hotel room all day long doing long strings of press interviews to promote movies can be exhausting and boring for them so to try and lighten their day they always go into the interview with a set of questions that are fun and have almost nothing to do with the movie at all. The celebrities usually get it immediately and are really thankful to not have to answer the same questions over and over. Anyway they played the interview, he seemed completely uninterested. They tried to make him laugh, he didn’t take the bait. They tried to get him to have some fun, again, no dice. Afterwards the guy who interviewed him said yeah he was NOT in a good mood. He said the second I walked through the door he was like “oh god not another one”. But that’s not the most frustrating part. So usually with a celebrity interview, just before we leave we ask them very kindly for a quick soundbite for the station. Usually we just get them to say something short like I’m Bruce Willis and whenever I’m in the UK I listen to BBC Radio 1 or whatever. They’re always happy to do it because they’re advertising whatever it is they’re trying to sell for free on our show. Well this is what happened when we asked Bruce for a soundbite... “Just before we go could we ask a huge favour and get you to quickly quote a soundbite for us into a mic?” *Bruce, very seriously: “Sure. That’ll be a million dollars.” (At this point the interviewer is audibly uncomfortable and makes a lighthearted joke about maybe doing the recording first and negotiating the money later. “Nope. You want me to advertise your radio show you gotta pay me a million dollars. Cut the cheque, I’ll say whatever you want”. Jesus, the guy was the biggest douchebag ever to walk the planet. I think he turned a lot of people against him that day because they were NOT nice about him at all and their (national) breakfast show was easily the most listened to radio show in the whole of the UK at the time. They would regularly pull in like 6 or 7 million listeners on an average day. chrismoyles.net/soundvault/soundvault.php?fileid=1412

He is 65 years old. He has made millions on his movies and at the time of "Die Hard" he was the highest paid action hero becasue no one would do that script and he took a chance of killing his career. So the point is at 65 some people just slow down and want to just take the money they earned in life and spend it. Have a little fun. We call that retirement and every once in a bit he might do a role here and there that takes no effort on his part just to keep busy.
@ZeonEons

He doesn't care. He doesn't have too. The video summed it up or at least Bruce Willis did. He's become lethargic and lazy. He's done these action roles 100 times over. Wether serious or spoofed. When he has a good role he puts in the effort, when it's just pay check after pay check, he's literally checked out. I hate seeing him in movies that are straight up trash. I won't watch them. It's clearly evident he doesn't care about them so why should i and that's the point.

He said that if there was any movie that could bring him out of retirement one last time, it is Indiana Jones, however retirement is just too much dam fun.

A lot of actors from Bruce Willis' era have been relegated to similar fates; starring in cheap VOD movies made by incompetent people who can't get jobs elsewhere. It's part of the consequence of Hollywood consolidation, i.e. studios investing big in only 3 or 4 tentpole films a year now and abandoning original mid-budget content altogether -- where most of these actors, Willis included, thrived. And I think guys like him have kind of accomplished and achieved as much as they were ever going to, so they don't have anything left to prove and I think that puts them on an autopilot. Also see Robert De Niro. It's really sad but getting older and being phased out of your own business can lead to this kind of terse indifference.
@MechaJutaro

Yeah, it's especially tough for these guys who've become associated with almost entirely with action roles. Willis has done impressive work in "non-genre" movies, it's true.... But these non-genre roles were mostly in flicks that have gone largely unseen
@RaiceGeriko
@RaiceGeriko 3 года назад
This. Folks just don't understand the business of Hollywood. I won't go into it in detail, but basically, we know who a lot of these A-List actors like Bruce WIllis are because of their work in 80's and 90's Mid-Budget films. These movies made so much money because they cost so little to make--well, so little to make compared to Tentpole films. Willis has a few hits in that category post 2000: Hostage and 16 Blocks comes to mind. Hostage was him doing his normal thing. But 16 Blocks--this video doesn't do it justice. He actually plays against type in that film. He's actually trying in that one. Bruce Willis should see about making a move to an Amazon series or something if he wants to get that sort of thing back. He maybe doesn't want to put in the work, though. He has nothing else to prove. That said, I'd love to see him play something like a Columbo or a Perry Mason. Not those exactly. Just something like that. It would be good for him in his Twilight years.
@riffbw
@riffbw 3 года назад
But not many had the same range as Willis did or the ability to branch out in to other genres. Arnie did some comedy, but drama was never his thing. Sly did some drama and shines as a writer, but I never saw much from him on the comedy front. Wills showed he didn't need to be type cast as an action hero, but kept taking the paychecks from roles that made him appear that he could only do one thing.

I loved the video. Most of our thoughts about Bruce Willis is the same. From 1995 to 2005 I watched all of his films and loved most of them. After 2000s his films became worse and worse. It was getting much hard to watch them. I think this is not only his fault. Hollywood films are getting worse and worse. Not only he bored, we bored of Hollywood films.

I actually worked on Die Hard 3 and the story was that Bruce had loudly complained that unions and crew wages were the reasons that more films weren't being made. Have you ever thought that he may want to play in other movies as a way of helping up and coming directors or other actors score a movie alongside a movie star like him? I believe it is rather generous of him to do it, many stars would not do that. I like Bruce Willis I didn't knew how he is in private but he is a human being like all of us, none of us are perfect. I am sure that deep inside he is a good person, maybe a bit upset for not being too lucky in his marriage, I can totally relate to that.
