I really liked seeing what you did , I have been collecting musical instruments on stamps for over 30 years ( off and on) I exhibited strings in 1991 for the first time and got a silver bronze since then my collection has really grown I want to exhibit again , I liked your tips on postal stationary I have lots of postmarks and first day covers but little stationary .Will be hunting for this . A wonderful, informative presentation. Thank you very much, Jean. I am a beginner collector and see myself drawn towards topical collecting. I enjoy to see the way different countries treat the same topic. I really learned a lot from you presentation, especially also to think "outside the box" about your topic/theme. I am still clueless about what to decide about "breaking up" and even "discarding" parts of sets. I don't want to loose either: the set, and the focus and cohesiveness of the topic. My Question: if one have a stamp with a topic as part of e.g. a miniature sheet, do one include the entire sheet but just "window" out the stamps in the sheet that are not applicable? I guess so. And if the picture on the souvenir sheet outside the stamps, and e.g. one stamp are your topic, but the other stamps not - cover them?
Hi and welcome to the wonderful world of topicals and thematics! There is no right answer as to how to keep topical sets in your album, everyone will have their own preference. Personally I keep my sets together, even when only one stamp in a set is related to blood donation or transfusion. I keep them in chronological order in my album, not by country, because I like to see how the messaging evolved over time. For a topic like birds or flowers, it might make more sense to organize the stamps by species, but really it is completely up to the collector. Re your question about windowing, I assume you mean in the context of exhibiting? I have only used and seen windowing for things like covers where you only want to show the postmark for example. I have not seen windowing of souvenir sheets, and I'm not sure if it would be considered along the same lines as an item of postal stationery - you need to show the whole item intact in the latter case because the entire item is the philatelic element. So if your thematic element is in the selvage of a souvenir sheet, for example, you would show the whole sheet but highlight the thematic element somehow, for instance with an arrow. In a couple of places in my exhibit I show a stamp from a souvenir sheet where only one out of several stamps was relevant, but I actually broke up the sheet and showed just the stamp by itself. If you don't want to break up the sheet, another possibility is to show the whole thing but cover it with a piece of tracing paper cut to size with a window cut out to highlight the relevant stamp.

Sorry I was vague! Thanks for your answer again. It especially explains about when using a window is "allowed", and that one should show other philatelic items entirely. ... and yes, I thought to arrange birds according to families, then within it in biogeographical regions, and then within that according to countries, then next step chronological. I look forward to start with a topical collection a lot!
@@GreatStampAdventure Can I suggest an idea , go to your public library and find a book on Birds of the world that is in catalog form , look at several until you find one you really like and maybe start your collection based on how that book classified and explained birds

I started collecting stamps by countries of my origin or places I had spent some time. Later, I began a few topical and thematic collections. My question has to do with stamps in my country collections that also are perfect for my topical or thematic collections. Short of having two of the same issue, it there a way that collectors handle this situation. I do keep an inventory of all my collections and make allowance in my topical inventory so as to not count the stamp or its value twice. Any ideas?
It makes sense to have more then one copy of a stamp. If for example it has two different items you collect topically on a single stamp , Let's say you collect mammals , and two different mammals are on the same stamp ,and other stamps of these mammals are hard to find. So you put one on each page or writeup of your collection ,but if you collect your topic in sets not split or written up I guess anything is ok
