One of the earliest blood transfusions depicted in literature was in Dracula (1897)! Poor Lucy is one of Dracula's victims and wasting away after being slowly drained of her blood... luckily there are four strong men hanging around who are willing to act as donors. Includes one of my favorite lines in the book by Quincey Morris, "that poor pretty creature that we all love has had put into her veins within [ten days] the blood of four strong men. Man alive, her whole body wouldn't hold it." Then he spoke in a fierce half-whisper. "What took it out?"
