At 54 seconds Freberg mentions H. H. Horn. In Los Angeles in the 1930s there was a Herbert H. Horn company which manufactured the "Tiffany Tone" brand radios.
Well, I thought I had heard every Freberg sketch there was until this one… and what a delightful encounter it is to hear a piece that was later to develop into the hilarious Dr Herman Horn Hi-Fi segments for the Stan Freberg Show on CBS Radio in honour of “deafen your neighbours’ week” (That brilliant radio series with Daws Butler and June Foray can still be heard here archive.org/details/stan_freberg_show ). This was still so fresh when I heard it later in the 60s and 70s when ever larger "stereophrantic" sound systems were such a passion for anyone claiming a love for music. Freberg and Butler wasted no time in dispatching the notion this had anything to do with music.
There was a female student DJ at WRIU who used to speak on-air like the announcer at the start of this bit whose voice raises in pitch at the end of every sentence or phrase.
The voice Freberg used for the intros and outros would be recycled for two of the three installments of "Herman Horne on Hi-Fi" that aired on three episodes of his 1957 CBS Radio show. As would many of the gags in this bit. But he nailed the pretense of hi-fi enthusiasts on the head.
hoo haa! the Pickens sisters in repose! I looked them up. Nice looking women! This was a pure gem of a broadcast. Reminds me when I was browsing for stereo equipment at Audio Design in Fairfield CT. Went to the back room where one of the Rolling Stones bought his equipment. If you had to ask for the price of the stuff, you couldn't afford it.
clasystems She did voice many of the females in Stan's comedy tracks, like St. George, as well as Little Blue Riding and Miss Jupiter in his radio show in the 1950s. What's even more impressive with her is that she is still alive at 99! and she still works in the recording business! wow!
Good Christ, you can still hear programs like this on NPR! (But you can't win a rubber lifesize inflatable Liberace. At least not since Pacifica shut down)
+Sgt. Bilko Pacifica shut down? I listened to it last night. KPFA had a great New Year's dance mix. It's the oldest noncommercial, listener-supported radio network in the world.
@@peterschorn1 Hardy har-har. :D I can tell you're a real hoot at parties. Seriously though, using the Lord's name disrespectfully is not wise, my friend.
