STAN GETZ & BILL EVANS_NIGHT AND DAY

Recorded in 1963, it was released after being on the shelf for about 10 years and received mixed reviews. ! This record is I think it was recorded in a very tense atmosphere due to the mismatch. In some songs, Evans plays a few notes at the beginning of his solo, then takes a break for almost one chorus. This disk records the band's sound also and the tense atmosphere at the scene. A sound that makes you feel like the band is out there in front of you, rather than being shelved and buried. Being able to imagine and enjoy the intense tension between the musicians is a happy and precious thing. Perhaps due to the stress of the performance, Evans played the slide piano hard during Dark Eyes, and Getz also...,
I will quote the liner notes♪
It's a remarkable collection of stimulating swing, on a highly intellectual levell. And at the end,
as if a release from the hushed nature of such cerebralmusic-making is necessary, they all in indulge in a riotous a bit of satire on Dark Eyes, with Elvin Jones coaxing those Krupa clouts on the bass drum, Gets recalling the big at tone of Charlie Ventura,, and Evans Flailing away in a determined stride technique. For a while it sounds like a Time-Life resurrection of the old Gene Krupa Trio, but Stan shatters the mood - but not the mirth - when he berates his colleagues with "You forgot arrangement!" You won't forget this delightful postscript - nor any of the oignancy that precedes it. Harvey Siders Down Beat Magazine

"...the musicianship from both of them..."? Like the drums and bass are not really an important part of the sound to behold? Well, "thanks for sharing", discokev100! -Doug Pratt, Atlanta, Georgia, USA

@edouglaspratt your reply to me come across as a bit mean sounding? Not sure if that was your intention. Just letting you know - give you a chance to reflect on your words. Music should be a space for love and compassion towards each other. Not for sarcasm or side swiping comments towards each other. You go easy on yourself now Doug. All the best from the UK.

What an absolutely perfect pairing Evans and Getz were! (and the pops and cracks of the LP recording make me feel like I'm listening to the album on my old record player) Sweet.

This is quite a band. Full credit is due: the delicate sculptor of great muscle, Elvin Jones - membrane percussion; Richard Davis - bass (tracks 4-6, 9 & 10); Ron Carter - bass (tracks 1-3, 7, 8 & 11); Stan Getz - tenor saxophone; Bill Evans - piano. It's hard to produce great music with all all-stars. So this remarkably beautiful album is a remarkable production feat. For another example of all-stars in fluid power, listen close to the album "Kind of Blue", and especially to the track "All Blue" with Miles Davis, Bill Evans, I believe it's both saxophonists, John Coltrane and Julian "Cannonball" Adderley; bassist Paul Chambers; and drummer Jimmy Cobb (pianist Wynton Kelly is on one track, "Freddie Freeloader"). -Doug Pratt, Atlanta, Georgia, USA

The comment I thought I should reply to has disappeared. It may come back, but I'd like to thanks to the 2 people who replied before me. It's probably the reason for the departure.Thank you! On this channel, I want to deliver the original sound of vinyl records. With a natural sound--not over produced, without any embellishment.

I appreciate the comment regarding the original sound of the vinyl records. That warmth is helping me right now. I couldn't place it at first, beyond the music itself, why the calmness and centering warmth. But there it is because of you. Thanks again.

I think the Dark Eyes “outtake” happened because the session overall was tense - more so for Bill than Stan, I think. The funniest part is when the engineer rewinds the tape near the end.

Wonderful music. But I don't see why so much emphasis had to be put, in the introduction text, on supposed difficult relation and tense atmosphere? If people were really not friendly to each others, they would not play that. And saying to your mates "you forgot the arrangement" is simply a matter of fact remark. It does not shatter anything. Who has heard of a record going on without any little mishap?
