I read an interview with Stan Lee and he said he wrote that text piece because for whatever reason, the Post Office mandated that in order to qualify as "magazines" comic books had to have at least two pages of "all text" and that's how he did that first story for Marvel, to meet that requirement for that issue! I LOVE THE ENDING! Something similar did happen at DC! In that meeting, Artist Carmine Infantino pointed out Marvel's titles had more striking covers and that's what DC focused on first! What Stan pointed out years later is that in contrast to DC, Dc's books had more intricate plots but at Marvel, Stan focused on CHARACTERIZATION, making their heroes feel more like real people and that's what the readers were responding to!

Hi Pulsar Stargrave! I originally heard that story about Stan's first story from him at Mid-Ohio Con sometime in the early 80s. You know, way back when you could get Stan's autograph for a buck and he had a twenty book limit. I'm pretty sure I heard him tell that story a couple of times about the issue running short and they had to have something quick. Comics did get lower shipping rates for having text stories in them--but regardless, Joe Simon told him he needed the story the next day. Thanks for liking the ending! That's my favorite part of the video.

Hi PokeDude011! Stan didn't get to see much action...he started off in communications and got transferred to a special propaganda unit in Hollywood...they made propaganda and training films. Joe Simon was stationed at The Pentagon in Washington D.C. and met another comic book publisher Alfred Harvey there. Jack Kirby on the other hand became a scout for an Armor Division and participated in a lot of combat. There's stories floating around that he killed three Nazis with his knife while on scouting missions. It's also been reported that his unit was one of the first American units to come across a concentration camp...Kirby, being a scout, was probably one of the first Americans to see a death camp up close.

Good mini bio. Kirby should have listened to Simon. Later events might have gone differently had he got the rights to his original pages in writing. Starlin's Drax the destroyer's costume looks a little similar to that original destroyer costume. Origin is very different, though. It's amazing there was never more demand for the Destroyer. Alex Schaumberg was in many ways a better artist than Kirby in the day. Atlas upped Kirby's game too.

Not to steal any of Stan Lee's thunder, however it would be of interest (especially in this history) to mention that Stan Lee with Jack Kirby co-created the Fantastic Four, the original X-Men, the HulkmThor, Iron Man, Doctor Doom, Galactus, Uatu the Watcher, (the Silver Surfer was Kirby's idea), Magneto, the Inhumans and their hidden city of Attilan, and the Black Panther, comics' first known black superhero-and his African nation of Wakanda. Lee and Kirby also created The Avengers. Stan Lee and writer-artist Steve Ditko (although Kirby drew Spider-man cover art for Fantasy #15, Ditko drew the original appearance). I have great admiration for Stan Lee, however, he didn't get his portion of fame without surrounding himself with talented people.
@FizzFop1
@FizzFop1 7 лет назад
Hi Renshen 1957, I allude to it briefly in a graphic that Stan had collaborators and the relationships did not end well. I chose not to get into the politics of it. I will say that Kirby and Ditko do not get their fare share of the credit. There's a couple of really good books out there over the Kirby's treatment--Tales to Astonish by Ronin Ro is an awesome book. It focuses on Kirby and his career. Another great book is Marvel Comics: The Untold Story by Sean Howe. That book has detailed info on the inner feuds going on inside Marvel going back to the Timely days. Both are great reads!

As a comic book fan, I would agree with the fact that Kirby, Ditko and Lee all deserve credit. Stan was smart enough to surround himself with remarkable talent. Kirby is the King of that early Marvel look. If you look at the art closely Richard Reeds looks like Kirby and Peter Parker looks just like Steve Ditko. The real overall issue is that none of them own the rights to those characters after creating them. While they can argue over who created it (even though Stan has admitted that they were all part of it) the true slight is that they weren't able to earn money off of the intellectual property they created.

@@lonewolfweapon761 Only an artist? You write from ignorance, or Marvel propaganda, Jacob "Jack Kirby" Kurtzberg was an American comic book artist, writer and editor, widely regarded as one of the medium's major innovators and one of its most prolific and influential creators. In 1940, he and writer-editor Joe Simon created the highly successful superhero character Captain America for Timely Comics, predecessor of Marvel Comics Captain America Comics #1 (March 1941), going on sale in December 1940. (The 3/41 is the date to remove the comic from the new stands and stores, FYI). During the 1940s, Kirby regularly teamed with Simon, creating numerous characters for that company and for National Comics Publications, later to become DC Comics. In 1940, he and writer-editor Joe Simon created the highly successful superhero character Captain America for Timely Comics, predecessor of Marvel Comics. During the 1940s, (There was later a "Miss America" who could fly), Kirby regularly teamed with Simon, creating numerous characters for that company and for National Comics Publications (Sandman and the original Manhunter), later Superman/National Comics, later to become DC Comics. At Marvel, in the 1960s under writer-editor Stan Lee, Kirby created many of the company's major characters, including the Fantastic Four, the X-Men, Thor, the Hulk and Iron Man. The Lee-Kirby titles garnered high sales and critical acclaim, but in 1970, feeling he had been treated unfairly, largely in the realm of authorship credit and creators' rights, Kirby left the company for rival DC. Jack Kirby died in 1994 and Stan (Stanley Martin Lieber) Lee began to take sole credit for Kirby's work at Marvel. The internet is a wonderful resource for information you might try it some time. PS I was buying Marvel Comics in the 1960's, as well as DC, when Marvel also published reprints of the original Capt America from WWII (Timely comics Simon/Kirby's creation) Cap was also in Comics books published before the Marvel name change during the Korean War with (Bucky), and the WWII included the original Human Torch (an android) and his mutant sidekick (who naturally was combustible) before the term mutant was used, Toro, in Comics which also featured he Sub-Mariner.

Nicely done. The bit at the end was hilarious. =D My first character was a robot made from old automobile license plates. His name was CARTAG. Okay it was stupid but I was only 11 at the time. Later, at 17, I came up with a dynamic duo of my own, "Dung Beetle and Stinkbug!" At one point, in the only story ever written, the villain says: "I'll beat the crap out of you Dung Beetle!" to which DB, as he was affectionately(?) known, replied: "I hope you brought your lunch because crap is my first name!"...(crickets chirping)...You can see why I was never published.

Thanks Zahir!!! I originally planned on doing that story...but it's a story everyone knows and it gets told all the time. It's a great story--but I decided to focus on the stories that don't get told. Stan's Atlas work has almost always been ignored, but when you read it, you can see his skill as a writer growing. They're not all gems, some are far from it, but it's during the Atlas years he became the writer/creator we know him for.

Actually got to meet Stan Lee and shake his hand in 1987! I will mourn his passing for all my life. I watch the video he did some years ago, the Stan Lee story about once a month.

Maybe if they decide to do a film with in the 1950's they could use the All Winner Squad, Jimmy Woo's Avengers (Agents of Atlas), the 3D man and the Invaders: Spitfire, Submariner, Human Torch & Toro, Destroyer, Union Jack, Ms America, Whizzer, the Patriot. With possible appearances from Crimson commando, Super Sabre and Stonewall. Possibly to fight off a Skrull invasion.

That first issue of Marvel Comics features 4 characters. I know about the Human torch, Sub-Mariner and Angel, but I wouldn't mind finding out more about The Masked Raider.

Thanks V.K.S!!! I realized last night that we're almost up to 500 subscribers! That's about 499 more than I originally estimated (lol). I should create a "thank you" video when we reach it. By the way, I wouldn't call it 'flawless." There's some major mistakes in a few and I always learn new cool things after I do one...for example, after I did the Heap-King of Nerdzz pointed out that the Heap was inspired by a Theodore Sturgeon short story called "It." I missed that one totally. In Daredevil, I mis-labeled a picture of Basil Wolverton as Charles Biro. Lately, I've been getting flack over the Black Bat origin because I didn't follow the pulp origin. Oh well, you live and learn. Thanks again VKS!

This is great informative clip.At least,there is an Eaglemoss lead figure of Keen Marlow.There is also too many Marvel characters with the name Destroyer.
@FizzFop1
@FizzFop1 7 лет назад
Hi jjgLatin!!! Yep, there's a number of comic book characters to take on the name Destroyer...not to mention there was a paperback character in the 1970s that used that name...I think he may have been a James Bond super spy clone...not sure because I never read any of the books, but I do remember seeing them at the drugstore when I was kid.

To some Stan Lee was just a comic book artist and writer, but to me he was a part of my childhood, and when he died a part of my childhood died with him. To this day I wished I'd held on to all the comic books I've collected, even the bad ones. I grew up on Stan Lee's comic books the same way kids grew up on Harry Potter and Goose Bumps, which I don't get it ( Goose Bumps that is) but whatever floats their boat. So here's to Stan Lee, a hero among superheroes.
