Saw a RU-vidr list his top 50 jazz drummers and Stan wasn't on the list. I cried foul. Stan is one of the greats and one of the most recorded jazz drummers of all time. Shame he doesn't get his due.

Then that person has never heard real jazz drumming. That's all I have to say. Stan is up there with Max and Philly Jo and Art Blakely, he's in the top 5 easily.

West Coast jazz musicians usually get overlooked. Listen to Conte Candoli on this track and then look for him on any greatest trumpet player list. He also rarely gets his due. Same for trumpet players Jack Sheldon, Gerald Wilson and Pete Candoli.

Stan Levey is a jazz drum giant and a major participant, contributor and innovator of the original mid-1940s so-called "BeBop" evolution. Stan is chronically overlooked and ignored by so much of the jazz press it is a shame. His time and his amazing consistency with super fast tempos is practically un-matched. Dizzy backed that up many times when speaking of Stan Levey. Unfortunately Stan's frequent gigging with Charlie Parker early in the days of the formulation of the modern jazz (bop) style is mostly undocumented since those live gigs weren't recorded. Very few drummers could keep time at a super fast tempo like Stan did. Just check out the record on Verve of Dizzy Gillespie with Stan Getz, Sonny Stitt and Dizzy where they record Wee and Bebop.

His ride work was so driving and fairly straight ahead as BeBop in the 60's had a more modern sound than in the 50s. I really like Jimmy Cobb's ride work from that era as it was perhaps more complex than Stans but both are great. Stans ride sounds like it had rivets as the wash is big. Many of the early Bop drummers opted for the old dark Zildjian K series rides. Although they had wash it could be controlled more than rivet cymbals. I kind of have an idea as i'm still drumming at 82. I have a K sounding Sabian Legacy which I use for BeBop and and a 69 Zilco med with rivets I use for Swing and modern Jazz. Great drummer Stan in any Jazz era.

Yes stan's comment about bernard rich was quite relevant but also inaccurate, the reason: sonny payne if we are talking about big band drummers. Buddy was the most popular and probably the best soloist, but Sonny is probably the best drummer in the big band format.

Tremendous well respected drummer no doubt about that. I like what he said in Down Beat Magazine. Stan Levey once commented to Buddy Rich when he was playing with Stan Kenton. Stan said Buddy Rich makes all drummers sound like CHILDREN when he plays behind a set of drums. Stan knew who the boss was. any way Stan was a fine fine drummer. thanks for posting this one. much appreciation for all of your efforts.

Stan played left handed with a double bass drum set up. Later became a professional photographer.

Buddy by far a freak of a player but it's telling he rarely if ever recorded or played with top-notch players in small groups. It's obvious he couldn't get along with people.

@@ronniecohen5668 Answer to the first sentence is yes. Listen to him on Norman Granz's, Jam Session #7. youtube. Same for question no. 2. You didn't have to know him to hear him play.
