This is a documentary video that chronicles the first meeting of legendary bebop jazz drummer Stan Levey and Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts. Taking place at Stan’s home on February 5, 2003, Charlie, who was in L.A. to perform with the Stones at a benefit concert, was introduced to his jazz idol Stan by writer and music historian Harvey Kubernik. Also in attendance was America’s leading session drummer Jim Keltner. Stan and Charlie had an eventful day reminiscing about all of the great jazz musicians that Stan got to play with over the years. Afterwards Stan attended the Rolling Stones concert (his first time at a rock concert) and he and Charlie became great friends. Produced and edited by Arthur Shelby Pritz. This is a non-profit video strictly made for the enjoyment and education of you the viewer. All of our RU-vid jazz videos are strictly non-profit and we do not receive any payments from RU-vid.

Beautiful moment when the two hug goodbye. 25:25. Charlie Watts is pure class and the sweet humility when he says, "I can't believe I met you."

RIP Charlie.. The statement from the Rolling Stones' publicist said: "He passed away peacefully in a London hospital earlier today [Tuesday] surrounded by his family." I will sadly miss him dearly as I am certain the whole rock and roll world will miss him terribly. Thank you for all the exquisite rock and roll.. Charlie Watts. The last time I had the pleasure of seeing The Rolling Stones.. I was front row and Charlie smiled the entire concert 😊😎💙🤘 he kept the motor running 💃

A great capture on film between true greats. What a lovely surprise visit that must’ve been for Stan Levey, then followed up by a night of VIP treatment for him and his wife the next night seeing Charlie play the Stones concert at the Staple Center in LA. The chemistry and humility between Charlie and Stan is plain to see in this footage taken almost 20 years ago. Jim Keltner is also a great drummer, and the writer who came with them had great knowledge. Rest In Peace Charlie 🙏❤️

This is a really serious, exhilarating drummer hang. I spent three years in the late 1980s playing with Stan’s old Kenton Orch colleague, guitarist Sal Salvador. Those guys were serious wild road dogs, and really breaking new ground musically. - This is a really valuable video, and I never knew Stan was a boxer. Now that I know it, I really hear the power and I punch in his drumming. He was a force of nature on the drums, an enormous, loud, powerful but deeply musical drummer. - I shed a tear or two when I heard about Charlie’s passing yesterday, not only a terrific drummer, but just seems like such a good humble guy despite HUGE stardom, and always looked sharp-always.

From Keith Jones ,Christian drummer Bude Cornwall. Sorry to hear about Charlie passing on I grew up listening to him from the age of 12 and now a 70 year old retired drummer. Always had a good crack sound on the snare drum a good back beat with The Stones. Thoughts and Prayers to his family. His Gretsch kit will be very sad without Charlie beating out those . rhythms. There will be no more tears and no more pain. From KJ Psalm 23

Charlie rarely talks about the Stones, when you compare to his interest in Jazz. He adores and admires the Jazz legends and pioneers. It would be totally out of character for Charlie to discuss the Stones when he idolizes the Jazz greats. Charlie is a very self effacing and humble character. He diminishes his importance and defers to others on a regular basis.

I remember watching the Ken Burns Jazz Documentary and while I enjoyed Jazz, it wasn't central to my musical habits, being a child of the sixties I was drawn to rock and roll and through that Blues, but it was that blues connection with Jazz along with the musical history on display that made me love the series and further appreciate how much great music can be missed if you segment it into labels and that lead to one of my favorite parts that being Stan talking about his father taking him to see Chick Webb and his Bird stories including Bird wandering off the train in the middle of nowhere looking for a fix and one comment that really stood out was Stan equating Addiction to wasting most of your time just waiting around , so after that introduction to Stan it made my day to see him here with Charlie and Jim.
