Stan Levey, one of the greatest drummers of his generation, was born in Philadelphia in 1926. He was one of the very few white drummers involved in the formative years of bebop and accepted as one of bop's most important drummers, along with Kenny Clarke and Max Roach. He played in Philly with Dizzy Gillespie's group in 1942, at the tender age of 16. Soon after he went to New York, where he and Dizzy worked on 52nd Street with Charlie Parker and Oscar Pettiford. After his tenure with the Stan Kenton Orchestra in the early 1950's he moved to the west coast in 1954, joining Howard Rumsey and the Lighthouse All-Stars, and was a major influence in what was called "west coast jazz" or the "cool school". Levey's crisp, melodic style continued to have more in common with bop than cool, and he inspired every group he ever played in. Stan has played on over 2000 recordings. This short tribute to his life & music career contains many photographs and film clips taken from his DVD documentary "Stan Levey The Original Original". The music cut on this clip entitled "One For Joan", was recorded in June of 1957, is featured on the CD "Stan Levey/5" and is available for download on Amazon and iTunes. The musicians are Stan Levey drums, Richie Kamuca tenor sax, Conte Candoli trumpet, Lou Levy piano, and Monty Budwig bass. Produced by Stan Levey and Arthur Shelby Pritz. Directed by Arthur Shelby Pritz. All of our RU-vid jazz videos are strictly non-profit and we do not receive any payments from RU-vid.

As far as I'm concerned, Stan Levey was the greatest bop drummer of all. And I know of what I speak because I saw every known bop drummer on the scene during the late 40's and up to the mid fifties. I was also a friend of Stan, and I was real happy that he wrote the foreword to my book on Bop 'ESSENTIALS FOR THE BOP DRUMMER',and he sent me his CD, 'The Original Original' And He WAS the Original Bop Drummer. Thanks to my next door neighbor, Bob Levey, Stan's son. I have many CD/s of Stan playing with many groups....and I can honestly say to you. 'Stan Was The Best. He was 'The Original Original'!!!! I was grateful to Stan for giving me important tips on how to play bop ride against the left hand and bass drum bombs.- GOD bless his beautiful soul- Artt Frank.

One of the best videos I've had the pleasure of watching. I had some of those albums -the 'Stan Levey Quintet' 'This Time the Drums Are on Me' & 'Stanley the Steamer'. I would still have them if my brother hadn't given my jazz record & jazz autograph collection away when I went to California. I read someplace that Stan quit music (early '60s?) to become a professional photographer. The late 40s, & 50s & 60s are the Golden Age of Jazz & Stan Levey was fortunate to be part of that Golden era.

OH MY! It is so true;while Max and Buddy got most of the ink,the cats who played all knew that Stan was their equal in the very least and far surpassed them as a man.

Oh, you were a personal friend of Max's? How do you know he was a bad man? My couple of experiences with him were times I'll cherish always. Stop spreading irresponsible horse shit.

@@italic2494 Yeah, it's very irresponsible. I can see maybe buddy being a tough day to work with, but to make no distinction is dumb.
