Holy shit... took Hicks cadance and everything hicks clothes, hair, attiyude and demeanor. This guy is still walking round off the backs of other peoples genius and respected by the dumb down population. Retired from stand up the second that Hicks died Stole Bills Character, couldn't steal his soul. He showed the real him as time passed by and his celebrity wasnt based on other comedians.
Uhhh, what? Leary has performed stand up waaayyy after hicks death. Hicks died in 94. Leary released albums in 1997 and 2011 and also continued doing stand up. Also hicks stole from leary, hicks even admitted it. Look it up
Denis Leary toured with Bill Hicks, stole his material, and launched his career. Later, Bill Hicks died of cancer. Denis Leary’s debut album was called “No Cure for Cancer”. If you believe in “Karma”, then the story of Denis Leary and Bill Hicks might prove to be a rude shock for you. Bill Hicks and Denis Leary were friends and fellow comedian for many years. However, in 1993, Denis Leary released his album “No Cure for Cancer”. This album angered Hicks as Leary has feature lines and subjects similar to Hick’s routine in his own album. According to American Scream: The Bill Hicks Story by Cynthia True, Leary had practically taken line for line huge chunks of Bill’s act and recorded it. Due to this, their friendship ended abruptly. Later Hicks was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer on June 16, 1993, and died on February 26, 1994. Denis Leary is now a famous actor, writer, producer, singer and comedian. man oh man I love leary, this bit & his bethany bit on his wife & his new show crack me up. giving up the smokes for purely financial reasons & probably always going to find the anti smoking people who are implolite worthy of two to five seconds worth of cathartic creative visualiation involving nerf guns.
Denis Leary, Robin Williams, George Carlin, Bob Saget, Eddie Murphy. Every 90's child knew who they were, but not one of them knew about the foul-mouthed comedy they did.
If he ever used other peoples ideas, he would cite them - Terrence Mckenna and Noam Chomsky for instance. I've watched every bit of material Hicks had recorded, and from what I can tell he would have rather died than be a sell out or plagiarise other people.
Cause everyone in the 90s has to be grungy or preppy. I bet if he wore Zubaz and a leather motorcycle jacket, you'll say he's stealing from The Diceman. 🙄
How can you say he tells the punchlines differently when he is literally doing all the same mannerisms as Bill and making all the same fucking sounds as Bill, also it's not the same shit as bill because you can tell Leary doesn't give a shit about anything but money, Hicks cared about what he said.
Not really true though. They both hit about the same time, both talking about the things that were happening in the day. Many other comics were also talking about Jim Fix etc etc
Denis Leary lifted segments of Bill Hicks act, re-worded it and perfomed it at a faster tempo. Which led to people referring to him as Bill Hicks on speed. Material such as "jim fix, cigerette warnings, and heavy metal records backwards are just a few examples of entire segments he lifted from Bill Hicks act - he simply re-worded it. But he did write some genuinly good material of his own. I remember a few years ago a few friends came round to my house for a meal. Afterwards we sat down and played xbox. We got into a discussion and they happened to mention by pure chance that they had just seen leary's "no cure for cancer" stand up show. When i told them that Leary had stole alot of stuff off Bill Hicks they wouldn't believe me. So i showed them all of Bill Hicks stand up dvds skipping to the parts that i knew Leary had stole. Being die hard Leary fans they knew his material off by heart. When they saw Bill Hicks performing Learys act they thought the shows must have been done afterwards. I then showed them the exact dates the shows were performed as its written on the inside sleeve of the dvds. I proved to them that Hicks shows were done years before Learys. They were forced to admit i was right. (Grudgingly).
1.) Hick's is dead, even if he cared before, he doesn't now 2.) If the bit becomes funnier, then it's an improvement 3.) Get off Hicks nutz and get a new cause
Hicks was HILARIOUS. I'm surprised by those writing that he was just cynical or told his jokes laconically; he could put a lot of physicality into his act and was far more genuine- easier when it's original material.
no he stole from bill the whole way of delivery as well , Bill Hick said one... I don't find Leary very funny because I know all the punch lines, see in the earl days he and Leary were friends... then Leary started doing Bill's bits that when there friendship ended. then Leary got famous Bill got cancer and died . Leary is funny but Hick was funny and made you think something leary couldn't do. Bill Hick was and still is for the most part sadly underrated
Attitude, clothing, hairstyle, and paraphrased routine along with hicks demeanor... yeah... He stole nothing... if you have the morals of a psychopath.
Wow that Jim Fixx bit is blatantly stolen. I've heard the comparisons of Leary and Hicks before, but I never realized he actually stole material almost verbatim. Makes it harder to enjoy the rest of the set honestly.
@@jeffgates1906 actually I looked up the wrong person the first time I looked into this as well. People are just so upset that Denis Leary completely stole so much stand-up material from Bill Hicks. I mean if you look at his first album or two and compare it to Bill Hicks there is no debate, he was definitely ripping him off. Then look at his album, Lock N Load. That came out a few years after Bill Hicks died. It is terrible. That doesn't necessarily prove anything, but it is definitely a point against Leary.
I won't apologize for the outburst, it just seems that the great ones always die young leaving us with people who don't quite stack up...sure Bill was an acquired taste, but the sheer genius of his "just a ride" monologue is worth more than any two bit rip off Leary could ever hope to mimic...
yeah but i could not see bill hicks doing anything beyond a comedy club, meanwhile denis leary has been in a bunch of movies and has stared in two tv shows, one of which is widely successful.
It surprises me of how devoted he is to the catholic faith. Rather, I was... Until I heard "i wouldn't stop smoking if they found a tumor the size of my head in my chest because I can't stand non-smokers". THIS EXACT KIND OF SPITE IS WHAT WE ARE ALL ABOUT
As a huge Bill Hicks fan myself, I do see a lot of similarities in jokes except Leary doesn't put any work into a real argument. Just lame cocaine crazed sounds to seem like he is hardcore about his smoking. It would have been better to be truthful and say how much you love snorting cocaine.
Denis was way more talented than Bill Hicks. His only claim to fame was when Tool used him on their Aenima album. Please realize even the stuff Denis DID borrow or steal from Hicks, he did WAY better. Denis and No Cure For Cancer was awesome.
Bill Hicks and Dennis Leary I think are both very good. Hicks delivery is more relaxed but Leary's is very in your face. I think they both had a lot of similar material. I thought I heard something that said even though Leary stole stuff from Hicks on No Cure For Cancer Hicks stole a lot of stuff from Leary in their early stand up days. BTW joke theft is not a new thing.
deadringer22000 Hicks didn’t care about him using his material in clubs and shit. He just got pissed when he copied entire segments for an entire stand up show
Anyone notice that all the people who suck up to Leary write their comments just like Leary would speak...? Including words like "pal" or adding unnecessary question marks. Bottom line Leary started out as a hack - stealing from any comic he could. And yes that included Bill Hicks, Louis CK and dozens more. You know what I'm sick of? People saying that Bill Hicks being dead suddenly means that he doesn't matter. Can't wait for Leary to be dead, then I can at least say "he's dead get over it!".
Denis Leary, Bob Saget, George Carlin and Robin Williams. All four of them were very vulgar comedians, but all four of them were well known to children in the 90's for cleaner roles. Joe Pesci, although not a comedian, was also a vulgar character who was well known to children in the 90's.
Stand up comedy is a nasty industry away from the limelight. Like the alter ego of humanity on a bad day. Dennis Leary, back then, is like a bar cover band playing other people's songs without crediting and putting a personal spin on, except nobody in the audience has heard the original material, assuming it's his. Leary's act is a complete theft of Bill Hicks, and later ripped off the ripoff in "No Cure for Cancer." Richard Pryor got big by ripping off Bill Cosby's early stuff. Robin Williams ripped off George Carlin. Many times in stand up clubs individual performers have descended into brawls over material theft. The performers, handing at the laughs, punching each other in the parking lot. The jokes and laughs are the silver lining of a dark, venomous profession. No question Leary is funny. His drive-through voice box schtick is priceless. But it wouldn't happen without Hicks. Hicks blazed the trail that Leary and others walked down after. The best original stand up comics go straight for perceived social taboos to tear to pieces. Social custom draws a line in the sand and says don't cross this, the great comics obliterate the line, those that drew it and what's being concealed. Takes fearless courage and confidence. Leary is a follower to Hicks' leader.
I'm in Scotland and most of the young folk here do, many only when they smoke hash (tobacco and hash joints). Those that don't, vape. Adults? 50/50. Every shop or pub has a cloud of cigarette smoke outside it. Sad but true.
@4joman You gotta keep the flow when do ing standup.. You can't stop for a drag every few seconds.. More like a visual aid.. I listen to both Leary and Hicks and they don't copy each other.. They just get pissed of by the same pervived wrongs in this world..
***** Funny, I was just saying that myself, but the other way around. At least Leary is funny. I find Hicks dull and boring, even if the material is similar.
Joe Blankenship you clicked on this video because Bill Hicks' fans can't let it go. Just let it go. The most successful part of Leary's career has been AFTER Bill Hicks' death. By a long shot. But I'm sure he plagiarized Hicks on Rescue Me, probably just did a Bill Hicks imitation in all of his movie roles.
