Stand Up For Yourself 

The thing about being in law enforcement is that one always has to be "on". Always having to have just the right come-back, and being quick and assertive with it. Always having to have just the right words in every situation is a necessity of the job. Then before you know it, it becomes difficult to converse with people close to you. Rather, conversations with close ones become interviews or interrogations - and sharp exchanges. After all, that is what you are used to in your work life. I'm not surprised by your friend's behavior. Under the circumstances, you did exactly the correct thing. I suspect both you and your friend will benefit from you drawing a line in the sand. He may have been in "work mode". You were not. He needed to be tuned-up. If your tuning him up does not take with him, you may wish to consider moving on.

Sometimes it's a tough lesson, and I still struggle with it on occasion. But the words of Eleanor Roosevelt are a good reminder: No one can make your feel inferior without your consent.

I'm so glad you called him out, you deserve respect! that's not a true friend doing that! I don't do Alpha men, most of them are some of the biggest Idiots and assholes on the planet! They think they are better than other people and will put you down quickly. I love strong masculinity in a man, such a turn on. but no one needs to be like that, narcists are a major problem. by him being a cop, it went straight to his head.....OFF WITH HIS HEAD!! proud of you for standing up. ..kudos!!

First of all I'm glad to see you back. I'm always astounded by your vlogs and the subject matter that you choose to talk about. Like many people I can identify with what you were experiencing and how you made up your mind to deal with the situation. I naturally am adverse to conflict. However I've been more assertive and it has allowed me to be more self confident and not taking a back seat to anyone. Well done Richie.

Ritchie you did the right thing standing up for yourself I have been in situations like that but with the people who bullied me when I was a kid because I was overweight I had a hard time standing up for myself at times back then but as an adult I don't let people walk over me

I have Zero problem letting people go in my life, If they don't live up to my standards of life, I let them go. I had one friend who listened as I told her my brother was just diagnosed with cancer, and it didn't look good, She didn't miss a beat to then ignore what I said and talk about her loser bf. I looked at her and said to myself, this is the last day I will ever see this person, and it was, I totally ignored her after that, because I then realized who she really was, Don't fret over people, true friends love and respect you, and listen to you. If not, just cut them off.

Proud of you. If you respect yourself you have to stand up for yourself. You owe it to your self esteem to be willing to confront abuse how ever it rears it’s ugly head. No need to be mean or rude but stand your ground and let the individual know that what they said/ did is unacceptable. You will discover that you are a better person.

Who knows? Maybe your friend actually heard you standing up for yourself... And as well heard you on how he made you feel. In a couple of months, 6 months, even a year if he gives you a call, consider finding out whether he took it to heart. Maybe you two can even have a deeper friendship going forward. I'd like to thank you might have had that effect on him.

Only you can decide when it's time to put a stop to unacceptable behavior; on the other hand, anyone who truly wants to be your friend should be ready to accept honest comments. It's always better to address situations like this as they arise, instead of waiting for them to become unbearable and then blowing up and causing a scene. You absolutely did the right thing by defending yourself and pointing out to your friend that his comments, even if meant humorously, are hurtful and uncalled-for.

Great video Richie, you unpacked a lot there. I think you did the right thing in speaking out. He may not have realized what an ass he was being so I think you helped him realize that. I loved the opening and as I watched it I was starting to think "this would be such a cool opening if Lucky came into frame," and suddenly there's Lucky. He and the other dog looked so happy and they seemed to be pulling you and your friend along with them.

Enjoyed the topic and kudos to you for standing up for yourself! I bet in addition to feeling better about yourself, you also stood a little taller and "something" was hanging a bit lower, lol. I had the same type of personality trait of just being submissive and letting things slide, but changed that and am still changing. One thing I have to watch is that when I do experience that "final straw" (which is never a good place to let yourself be backed into), I could push back a bit too strong and overwhelm the person with my anger. We will learn that place of balance though!

It's his insecurity that makes him act like that. After you had a talk you should have given him a second chance . You waited three years to have the talk. So in all fairness maybe he digested the information and has had time to reflect.

What did he say exactly? They can disrespect me once, but the second time about the same thing, there History. That’s why I’m single after 33 years with a guy.

Rule of thumb- you’re only as little as you allow others to make you feel. I’m curious as to why you considered him a friend to begin with especially after the first time he’s hurt you- or were you really just using him as someone to help your image look Good? We don’t know your “friend’s “ story either but if you had gone that long with allowing someone to belittle and hurt you, it basically seems that you some other interesting reason why you allowed things to continue that way. A true friend would listen to you right away and try to understand you, but only an idiot would be around to take the abuse he’s given you for so long too.

you must be desperate if you are hanging around someone who is a narcissist but you are not alone in that category. are they a friend or just company? do you feel attracted to the abuse because this has been going on for 3 years. if you are, you are not alone. many gay guys find themselves in an abusive relationship that they are not able to leave as they have no self confidence and fear being lonely. I've always had others ask me how can I live alone, don't I get lonely. I told them it was easy as it was my peace and freedom. the last time i dated anyone was 24 years ago and I really do not miss it. I had my thrills in that area but it was time to move on. I do not do well around others as they are just a waste of my time. do not let people treat you like trash. even at work, if there is a problem you can always leave. nowadays I am working on a huge project in which I will be moving so I can own my own property and get away from the need of living paycheck to paycheck and the banks who take half my pay. I am lucky to be in this situation. take care of your self. you did well.
