Love the Octave Mandolin tuning! That Uke sounds great! I recently tried a similar thing with my Concert Ukulele. I tune it CGDA like Mandola. I made a "very rough" video playing in the Mandola tuning - it was mostly a trial balloon and also my first post on RU-vid. I was going to take it down but folks are still watching and liking it! 😂 I also put some Aquila Mandolin strings on my Soprano Uke and tuned it to Mandolin. The intonation is way off on the high E. The three lower strings are not bad. I eventually plan to get a custom saddle built for it.

Interesting. Did you use the Aquila strings that are designed for a soprano uke, but are for mandolin tuning, or the "reds", which are designed to be used on mandolins? I used the soprano (mando tuning) strings on a bowl back mandolin, and they worked out well. I tried the reds, and they were kind of horrible, the e strings would snap no matter how gently and gradually I tuned them up. The reds also just a plastic sound, if that makes sense. I like the mandola tuning on the the concert on your video. I may have to try that out some time.

@@ChrisOttoMusic I used the Reds for Mandolin. I didn't know they made a Ukulele string for Mandolin tuning! I will definitely give those a try if I can find them. Do you know what they are called?

@@ChrisOttoMusic Thanks so much for the tip! I found them on Amazon and ordered a set. I also got two sets of CGDA for my Tenor and Concert Ukes. It will be amazing if these strings fix the intonation issue. That will save the grief of having a custom saddle built and installed!

The octave bandola tuning sound way better , on that baritone uke , I tuned my baritone uke octave mandola and I love it but I don't play chords with it , I thought my self how to read music notation for the Mandolin since I love Irish jigs and airs and I love the way my baritone sounds with the nylon strings playing the music I played with my mandolin , any ways great video .

Nice comparison. Please do more if you can. I like smaller body instruments for curling up on a couch. I was looking for baritones tuned like a mandola / tenor guitar since there arent too many small body tenors available at a lower price point. The octave mandolin tuning sounds great. Another good option.

Thanks. I recently tried using mandola tuning on an odd mandolin (not really sure what it is really), that I bought a long time ago, and I really like it. I may do a video about it soon. I find the tuning is better suited for picking melodies than strumming chords, but is very pretty.

4 years before this reply, based on a different video, a company made low octave G ukulele strings for the baritone. Hopefully they still do.

Hi. Thanks for posting this. Have you considered doing something similar like an all fifths tuning w/ a concert or soprano ukulele?

I have a tenor in what I call "drop E mandolin tuning". It's mandolin tuning, except the E string is an octave lower. It's easy to do with a set of low G ukulele strings. you just tune the c string up to D, and switch positions on the E and a strings. I posted a video about that tuning. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jxOSdlRh3u8.html

Natural baritone tuning is the winner, but baritone is baritone, they both sound like a baritone

Yes, in this case it sounds better, but don't forget that they are different instruments. We don't know the recording circumstances either; they should be standardized. In any case, the mandolin tuning has an extended range, but it didn't work out very well in this video.

Do you have to change strings on the baritone in order to get the madolin tuning?😊

I have recently had great success with my baritone uke tuned like a mandolin or violin using one classical guitar string. I simply installed a classical guitar A string for the deepest string and tuned it to low G. I took off the D string and moved it up one position. Then I simply tuned the B down to A and left the E as is giving the G D A E tuning. I had to widen the slot for the A string slightly to get it to settle in. I just used the A string as a fret file until it settled in nicely. Works great and now I can play any mandolin tune or fiddle tune on the baritone uke. I use it mostly for celtic jigs, reels and hornpipes.
