Ukulele alternative tuning part 2: Octave Mandolin tuning on a Baritone

How to tune a baritone ukulele at octave mandolin tuning, and why to. I hope this is helpful to anyone thinking of trying this. (I say a number of times on this video that you have to tune a string "one note up (or one note down)" when it's really two notes. For example going from G to A would be going from G to G#, and then to A. Sorry for any confusion.)

One thing I would add is, upon further review, there may be cases in which it makes sense to mix guitar strings and baritone ukulele strings, depending on how the uke you're using is set up. The guitar low E and G strings are fairly thick gauge strings, and could throw off your intonation. This wasn't a problem with the vintage Kingston uke I used for this video, but it was an issue for the new baritone a got a year ago. I found it was better to a guitar A string for the G string, and Baritone uke strings for the rest, (D for D, G for A, and E for E), if that makes sense

thanks for sharing this: one of these days I will own an Octave Mandolin just for extra kicks and skills, but for now I'm happy with my Baritone and Tenor Ukes

I am not really used to string instruments, but I like the sound of the octave mandolin, and wonder if GDAE tuning on a baritone uke might be the gateway to me trying out chords and some simple tunes etc. Interesting video.

It helped me, for sure. To be fair, ukulele chords are also simplified, and in some ways are more similar to guitar chords, if you chose to take up that instrument in the future. Good luck with whatever you pursue.

Interesting, I've been trying to tune my bari uke like this, what do you use for the A string, I've found the D G B E sets will do fine for the C G D strings but the E string will never go to A. I was wondering if you had any success using the A string from a low G set as the A on your C G D A ukulele?

Hi Chris. What gauge strings did you use for this setup? I read someone on mandolin cafe complaining that the strings felt too slack so they tuned up to CGDA instead. Also, I looked online. What's the scale length (nut to bridge) of your baritone? 19"? 20"? I'd guess the frets are closer together than a guitar, but not as tight as a mandolin, right? Do the friction tuners on that instrument cause you much trouble? Thanks. This looks like something I'd like to try. I play violin, mandolin, & dabble on guitar. I think having something 'classical guitar like' or w/ nylon strings, but tuned like a mandolin an octave lower would be easier for me to play.

So, on the baritone ukulele in this video, I used D'Addario classical guitar strings (hard tension). I used the E string (.044) for the G string, the D sting (.030) for the D, the G string(.0410) for the A, and the high E (.0285) for the E. I find that if you tune up from the strings intended note (E up to G, for example), the tension is fine, just take your time tuning up the wound E, since the winding can fray if it's done too quickly. There can be issues with intonation with those bigger gauges, depending on the set up on the ukulele. The vintage uke in this video works fine with the guitar string gauges, but for another baritone I have, the strings sat too high on the nut, causing the G and A to be out of tune on the top few frets. For that uke I used baritone ukulele strings (D for D, G for A, and E for E). I don't have the gauges for those, but they are all pretty thin. For the G string I used an A string from the guitar set (.036). The G string is a little flabby that way, but it improved the intonation issue. You may just have to experiment the baritone ukulele you get. The scale length of a baritone ukulele is 19 inches, the the frets are quite a bit closer than on guitar. All the common chords are easy to play, although some chords are a bit of a stretch. Good luck!
