The robot, called OceanOne, is powered by artificial intelligence and haptic feedback systems, allowing human pilots an unprecedented ability to explore the depths of the oceans in high fidelity. Additional footage courtesy of: © DRASSM/STANFORD UNIVERSITY/GEDEON PROGRAMMES - 2016

Creating a robot that records underwater is probably the most creative thing humans ever made

He's a little too excited about it looking humanoid. he's really excited about it being able to do things ROVs have been doing for decades.

Give it a neck axis and integrate HTC Vive. Or better yet, replace the head with two 180 degree cameras integrating Google Street View style virtual camera rotation. There's your binocular vision without the need of a head or mechanical steering axis.

Hey, a good idea is a good idea. Just because someone has Stanford on their CV doesn't make them think of everything. A head is meant to be a support for a brain, ears, nose, mouth, eyes and facial skin sensors. If all you need is an eye, drop the rest.

Great work. Wouldn't a more practical oriented design be better than a humanoid one? I want to learn how the keep the water out. There are moving parts and kilometers of water pressure. Impressive stuff. Keep pushing forward, humans. We're going to desperately need these inventions soon enough.

+Shadow Heart The ROV (Remotelly Operated Vehicle) that was invented in the 70s and upgraded with the latest technology since that time. It is widely used in the Oil&Gas industry. This humanoid project looks great. But the "problem" it seems to want to fix has already been solved since 1970. www.wikiwand.com/en/Remotely_operated_underwater_vehicle The ROV uses hidraulic pressure to protect the system.

Ahh stop pushing the increase production for climate change agenda. If CO2 is the problem, then the only solution is to decrease demand for new technology, not increase it. Productions creates the problem that you believe will be solved by more production. Population growth has to stop as well.

@altan.botmaker

@@christianeriksson4733 well the technology moves exponentially. After the birth of wheel (2000 BC) it took 4000 years to build a car(Benz car) and after the birth of first airplane(1903) it took merely 70 years to launch an interstellar mission (Voyager) Going by this trend, I wouldn't be surprised if robots are capable of fully enacting the human tasks (right from cooking food to working in heavy industries) in next 20-30 years.Yeah, they will overtake our race in coming years.

This is how space EVA should be done. If these end effectors are not already more dexterous than an astronaut's gloved hands, I expect they could be made so.

My question was "why"because you pointed out only for contamined, toxic waters!though this ROV is far from being high's depth machine! many years working in the world of ROV and AUV ! a workclass can get to 4000mt and work on any subsea structure

would make so much more sense to make the robot in the shape of a dolphin or some kind of fish. Human's are such weak divers and awkward in the water.

Totally agree, lol. But I think our homeboy needs arms, and that's why they did it like that. The human head is pretty goofy, and looks like it belongs in a horror movie- and there should only be one camera to see out of... but it's a cool concept.

humans are not as evolved as species that have been living in the sea for 1000s of years if we want to make something optimised for the ocean wouldn't we go with nature on this one?
@DsGPwrweeks

+bZone agreed
@MrGreenCheddar
@MrGreenCheddar 8 лет назад
+bZone I agree. I believe this thing having a human shaped head is not necessary. Its vision could be two go pro type cameras or something like that. Or why not 6 or 10 cameras putting together a huge panoramic image where the "head" would be. It seems it as clunky as a human in water and it makes as much scene as a fish out of water.
@bzone3588
@bzone3588 8 лет назад
+MrGreenCheddar We might as well put 360° audio and video and drone map the whole ocean. "Google maps sea".

Also, if you're going to land on the moon, how about making all humans (with the hardware) capable of being connected to the robot, we don't have to be in control, but we can be VR first person… right?
