Professor Tony Belpaeme - Tony Belpaeme is Professor of Cognitive Systems and Robotics at Plymouth University. His research include social systems, cognitive robotics, and artificial intelligence in general.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

This is fascinating. It sounds similar to the "kinder kamp" robots from the scifi game "Transhuman Space" that are used to help teach/raise children in said setting. ^_^

This type of show has become fashionable .. the subject brings a polystyrene head with 2 servomotors and makes a conference another subject downloads a robot hand from the internet that is useless, prints it and ready another conference

Well, the verdict is still not in for cats, but scientists have tested and reported recently that dogs DO understand human vocabulary not just tone of voice. Thy hooked dogs up to MRIs and gave the verbal messages in tones of voice that did NOT match the vocabulary: 'Good dog' in a negative tone of voice, 'Bad dog' in a positive tone of voice, etc. Not only did they find that the dogs responded to the vocabulary, not the tone, the scientists found that the same area of the dog brain lit up that processes language compared to what part of the human brain lights up when processing language. The write up of the experiment concluded that dogs do understand human language and are not merely responding to tone of voice. Physicists report they have found that experiments produce different results when people are in the room or not in the room. In actual fact, human beings have not proven the limits of human speech on non- humans, nor the limits of communication among non- humans. Botanists published a report that plants communicate with each other and are primarily exchanging chemical messages about which directions to grow and which directions to avoid depending on water & nutrient availability. It was surprising to hear one clergy report he had actually been asked whether it was okay to talk to stuff. He said that since no harm is done by doing so he found no objection to people talking to stuff. e

I would like a robot to talk for me I can't say a lot of things due to anxiety and people may get the wrong message. Humans are judgmental and getting the wrong message can result in a disaster.

martina: in the middle-long term, ther will be company robots which would give you conversation, and the possibility to practice the skills that you need to practice, giving you feedback as if they were master psychologists employing the best updated cognitive skills to improve your weaknesses....this will be amazing, you can practice and train social skills with a robot, you can ask for advice, you can ask for informatioon not available to you.....imagine robots as bodyguards, they can teach and train you in kung-fu,judo,aikido or any martial art...imagine housework robots doing all the boring tasks like cleaning, ironing, packaging putting rooms in order...imagine phylosophical robots to challenge your mindsets and thought schemes in order to improve your cognition.....this will be a massive paradigm shift....and imagine doctor robots, knowing how your entire body really works, which are your neurophysiological conditions and types of responses, able to check your status in very little time, and give you advices or even to give you first aid if you have passed out or are in an medical emergency where you can't do anything for yourself.....this will be completely amazing!!!!! Be aware that you can't control what people will think about you, jusst give your best and focus on what you can do. you can try breathing techniques such Chi-kung,they give you balance and control of anxiety,i know for myself....breathing is one of the most powerful tools we have,i can heal and it can transform your body and mind. there are so many options! dont give a damn about anybody thinking about you! just focus on being happy and giving your best, and outcome will follow.

Kids want playmates who are not adults. Unless it is the one favourite adult (aunt/uncle/whoever) who does not order and correct them all the time. A tiny robot feels like a non-adult. I guess that works a lot in favour of a robot. If you made a robot that looked like it was a 40 year old human, the kid would not take so much of a liking to it, I think.

the issue about robots isn't the lack of a face, it's the lack of emotional speech as you don't read a person's intention trough just the face, a lot of it comes from their voice's expression. Don't bring out the same goddamn concept with just different looking robots, make a robot talk in a humanoid manner without pre-programmed tracks and you've got my attention.

Well, research says otherwise. The face matters, embodiment matters. Also, I think bringing down a child's physical therapy from 6 weeks to 6 days using a robot that talks like a robot is more important than getting your attention.

You're right- our social brains evolved over many millions of years, not just the last few hundreds of thousands of years.
