Stanford's Initiative to Cure Hearing Loss

Stanford School of Medicine has committed to an initiative to cure hearing loss. Rapid advances in the bioscience and technology of hearing (many of which originated at Stanford) make it realistic to envision a cure within a foreseeable time horizon. This talk focuses on these advances and the multidisciplinary research effort to bring a biological cure for major forms of hearing loss, as well as review today's state-of-the art medical treatments and emerging technologies to improve the lives of those with hearing impairments.

I am Suffering from tinnitus for almost two years now. Played drums since i was a little child, went to a lot of clubs and played my ipod way too loud. Life really sucks right now. It is getting hard sometimes when the tinnitus gets louder. Never thought something like this would happen to me and i am just 20 years old. It scares me because i am suffering so bad while i am just that young. Hope that you scientists will be able to cure it as soon as possible... Thanks you SO MUCH for doing this

Brother, i hope you're good now. I m also suffering from tinnitus and i m 21. My parents always told me listen music at low level. I never even thought that it hurts my ear. Now looking back its only sadness and hate for me. I think this life is not worth living

This is wonderful and so amazing. Please keep this research and don't give up. You are giving so many people hope thank you. Who ever is watching this video and reading this post. Can tell others that maybe can help financially or in another way. Can help this research go futher. Instead of 10 years for humans let it be sooner. Thank you for your work and for hope.

I hope they find a cure,so I won't be stuck with this hearing loss for the rest of my life,I really don't want to wear hearing aids forever...and they don't even work,they make it worse for me to hear clearly in my ear that's normal.

I am 65 with significant hearing loss, and wear hearing aids. Please keep up your great work. I find myself frequently in fear, as my hearing has declined significantly even in 5 years. Thank you.

Thanks very much but it messes up our lives in so many ways its frustrating sometimes.I work 7 days a week and im not afraid to work hard but im loosing it at a very rapid rate i try to stay away from loud music and sometimes i see these young kids wearing headphones 24/7 i try to warn them.Again thanks very very much.I just don`t want to file for disability its not just the way im raised .

I am 70 and have profound hearing loss and tinnitus. Mine is from noise and mostly genetic. I am hoping the medical community will soon come out with treatments.

This is so encouraging to watch! I'm a 20 year old male who due to too much listening to iPod has a moderate hearing damage - and i don't want to hear nothing at all when im 40 or 50 - so im really happy to see how much they are doing in this field!

I really hope something can be done about hearing loss. My 1 year old son was born profoundly deaf due to cmv virus. He just got implanted with his first cochlear implant. It's not easy seeing my baby go through this but I'm hopeful for the future

"The success rate of ossicular chain repair to improve hearing depends on the problem. If the stapes is intact, the rate of a good hearing result is about 75 percent. If the stapes is not intact, the rate of a good hearing result is about 50 percent. Although the surgeon always tries to repair the problem, the healing process has a major impact on the ultimate hearing outcome. Scar tissue can pull on the delicate ossicles and/or ossicular prosthesis, moving them from the best position. I'm new to tinnitus and hearing loss. I got it mainly from my air conditioner and because I live in a neighborhood that's so bad and loud. I'm hoping that a cure for my condition comes soon. I myself am also 20 years old and I don't want to go deaf in the future. I'm hoping that this cure comes soon. I really don't want to get my ear surgically analyzed. :(

How about the hair cells in semicircular canal for balance. I have been suffer 24/7 dizzy due to 42% damage in my right ear. I want some hope too. Thank you

Well, the air conditioner was supposed to block out all the noise that goes on in my neighborhood, or so I thought. But then after days and days of being exposed to the noise my AC makes, my ears began ringing. I went to the doctor for it, but he told me to just live with it. I have since gotten used to hearing the ringing, but someday I hope scientists can come up with a cure for this annoying problem.

What about tinnitus? We need a systemic approach to addressing all causes of tinnitus. As far as my tests I have no hearing loss but many tinnitus sounds. I have some of the best hearing of anyone out there.

We probably would need intelligent nanites and regenrative signal molecules and super high resolution scans to repair the inner ear or nerves. Or, a way to totally remove the entire hearing system and regrow it if you can't find the error, very advanced stuff.

I am 67 years old. It happened over nigh on Dec 2022 I think I had a cold not sure if it was COVID. I lost my hearing on my left side. Hearing aids did not help. The doctor I visited a month later thought it was liquid behind the trumps. That was not the case. He gave me Fluticasone Propionate Nasal Spray which did not help. All I can say my left ear was always weak and for years now always with noice. If I remember correctly the noice started happening after a visit to a doctor for ear cleaning 30 years ago. I think the mentioned of dying hair in the Cochlear that does not send the pulses to the nerve fits my case. It makes sense. If I go to a very loud concert and plug my right ear, I can hear from left somewhat.

This is published 6 years ago, not sure when did they start and what is the development, anyone know it, appreciate it. I also heard about a gel that can be injected into inner year to enable hearing, that was about 3 years ago, they said it will be here in about 2 years or so, if anyone know more please update it, thanks.

@@nottingham1 Where'd you hear this? ill be very happy as my hearing has been loss due to loud noises and gunshots. im 20 and im predicted to be fully deaf at age 40-50 so if this is true that's great.

Very informative and promising video for sensory hearing loss, I applaud and fully support this initiative and all other research efforts. However, as a parent of a child suffering from conductive hearing loss caused by the erosion of the stapes bone from cholesteatoma (and within six months of reconstructive surgery her implant shifted, hearing loss increased and ctoma grew back), I think the implication that we have solved middle ear hearing loss through implants is dangerous for all patients and researchers. Many implants do not restore normal hearing and do not remain intact longterm. Let's not diminish one critical component for another, all are important to continue researching and striving for cures.

He said that takes 5 years to work on mice and 10 years to work on people in 2005. Can't believe saying the same in 2012 very disappointing with this. Come one we need this to work.

July 13th. Do you have more recent investigations or talks about it. I am a mom of an 11 year old daughter with a severe hearing loss. If my daughter gets an implant does all these investigations works? If the coclear is destroyed? Hope somebody answers! My daughter name is Sofy :)

Hi. I am deaf since birth. It runs in my father's side. I really dont agree with this to help deaf people. I see this as threaten to my deaf community. I am proud mother of my deaf son who is smart and speak sign langusge well since he was 2 months old!

I am hard of hearing (sensorineural hearing loss) and I also got it from my father’s side of the family, it’s a hard life and the listening fatigue really gets to you so I do agree with what they said and hope they can find a cure or a way to revitalise the damaged nerve in my ear.
