LMS Stanier Class 5 44871 was the motive power from Carnforth to Preston via Carlisle and the Settle Carlisle line for todays Winter Cumbrian Mountain Express which originated out of London Euston, we first see the 5 with eleven on and 57601 on the rear from Shap Wells in between showers then on the return from Birkett Common where Class 56 56105 thankfully failed to spoil the shot, thanks to Steve for the crack and company and good to chat with David Edgar at Shap Wells and Luke (Black Country Steam Videos ) and Liam (Liam's Locos ) at Birkett Common, thanks for watching.

A joy to watch Nige. Good locations to capture the spectacle and sound of the 5 working so well. Great composition in the early part of the first shot with the hills in the background towering above the train. Take care - Chris

@nige7577 7 месяцев назад
Many thanks Chris, we were very lucky how the conditions changed in our favour as you couldn’t see the hills when we first arrived on Shap then we went to Aisgill but it was miserable when we arrived so diverted to Birkett where the rain only started on the way back to the car, cheers nige 👍

Who would have though that more than half a century after the demise of steam, sights and sounds like this would still be found. Fantastic !! 👍👍👍👍👍

Thanks Robert, I’m sure no one back in the late sixties would have bet that mainline steam would make a return at all and in such a big way like we see today, it certainly cheered up lots of young trainspotters from the sixties 😀 cheers 👍

Nige, It's not often you can get a good clear shot from Greenholme to Shap Wells but it worked for you on this occasion. Well captured. Regards, John

Many thanks John, it wasn’t like that when we arrived as we first went to Salterwath but the rain was straight at us so we decided to try Shap Wells for some shelter even then you couldn’t see Scout Green for the mist but luckily about 20 mins before it cleared out nicely, regards nige 👍

Great footage Nigel. I really love the long approach shot at the Shap Wells location and Birkett was always a favourite on the S & C 😊

Thanks Keith, it’s a great vantage point from Shap Wells and higher up but it wasn’t looking like that when we first arrived as you couldn’t see much further than Salterwath , Birketts ideal for multi shots, cheers 👍

This engine was based at Trafford Park MPD (9E). So on checking my diaries from my BR days, 21/May/1965, when I first fired this engine as a passed cleaner on Trafford Park East End Sidings. There were other several occasions when 'our paths crossed' ...😊

Great video Nige, my plan was to go somewhere on Shap but when I got to the summit the visibility was awful so I turned around and headed north of Penrith. It looks like the mist eventually cleared for you. It looks like you were really lucky at Birkett with diesel coming the other way.

Thanks Alistair, yes we were a bit disappointed with the conditions when we first arrived that’s why we went to the woods but were pleasantly surprised how it cleared out and stopped raining, we weren’t expecting anything as it wasn’t on RTT but luckily just as the tour had passed the last camera the 56 shot passed, couldn’t have been any closer 😂 cheers 👍

If I had thought that there was a chance it would have cleared I would have stayed down there but it was not looking that good. I had spoken to Bob first thing and he had decided not to come out as the weather in Barrow was really poor@@nige7577

The Black 5 barking in top notch form after probably a period of winter maintenance and an unusual choice being a Riley loco running what is normally a WCR featured tour?👍
@nige7577
@nige7577 7 месяцев назад
Thanks Stephen, had just come out a couple of weeks ago after winter maintenance, WCRC only have Tangmere that is air braked and available at the moment due to the issues with the CDL coaches and both of Riley’s 5s are air braked so a good runout for the 5 before heading to Fort Bill next month, cheers👍
