A great performing plane that I am going to pass on to a Veteran. In this video I clean up the plane, give a new tip on sharpening the cutters and take it for a test drive. Please give a thumbs up if you like the video and don't forget to thank a veteran.

I had one of those in my hands a couple of years ago just outside Reno, In my estimation it was in too rough a condition and they were asking too much for it, so I passed. I've not seen one since, and I'm still on the hunt for a good user that I can refurbish myself, especially with what I have learned by watching these videos.

Hi, first off I'd like to thank you for all the videos you've made, I appreciate all of them. I'm new to woodworking and fell in love with hand planes. I recently bought my first one which is a Stanley number 4 which I got for $20. I think it's an older one, I don't really know how to tell. It's got a pat no on the lever cap the number is 1918750 and then it has 0466 stamped on the underside of the frog. The only other markings on it are a made in Canada stamp on the blade and a made in Can in front of the tote. Anyways I'm trying to make it a user and your videos have helped. My second plane should be arriving in about a week I bought a brand new Faithfull no. 7 jointer plane for about $133 with shipping which seems super cheap to me. I'm slightly nervous about it cause I looked and couldn't find and reviews for it so I'm not sure what to expect. Have you heard anything about Faithfull planes? Appreciate any feedback and thanks again for everything but it's time for supper bye lol.

Looks like a lovely plane, the rotating fence must be very convenient. I suppose the starboard iron becomes blunt and worn faster than the port iron, causing unevenness over time?

I was thinking about this too. it would probably be best to just resharpen/rehone both cutters at the same time so the wear on them is even.

Nice plane! I bought a Union version off EBay but the screws were shot. One iron holds OK but the other one slips.

I had not thought about welding it full, that might be a good idea! There is not much left to tap as it is now.

Is it worth replating one? The nickel on my 48 and 49 are in pretty bad shape.

Have you ever considered re-plating the nickel? Don’t think it’s too hard, just a chemical bath, some electrodes and a battery.

Cool, look forward to seeing that.

Greetings Keith........What would be the proper length of a replacement plane iron for my StanleyBailey No. 5 jack plane? (Type 19). You know, something such as the blade it would have come with when new. Thank you!!
