I sold one of them. And now I can't remember which one it was. All I know it that it wasn't the Preston... The Preston is a keeper.

Ahh. Well I'll definitely keep the Preston and let one of the others go. See which one goes guest.

FYI Stanley plane dating/typing is a mostly American thing - & the identifying features/nuances used to date US made tools aren't applicable to their UK made tools, which often retained features of older US types. Stanley didn't start making tools in the UK until the late 1930s - so either the blade in your 'early' #7 is a replacement (perhaps on an older US plane body) or the plane isn't from circa pre 1902. From my limited experience, WWII era UK made Stanley planes are all over the place when it comes to what details and features are present/missing.

Thank you for this. As you are aware both the Stanley planes in this video are both US made and Stanley used to supply a huge amount of planes to the UK before they started making them here. The family business where these both came from was well established in the mid 1800s, so I believe these to be not 'messed around' but more likely we'll worked, and understand that irons could have needed to be changed at any point during their lifetime. Thank you. Jamie

For me it depends what you want to do with the plane. If you want to use them, the type 8 needs to go. Small adjustment wheel and no frog adjustment. The other two are more practical. BUT, if you follow that thinking .... then two need to go! If I was only thinking practically I'd only need one number 7 and the one to keep is the newer Stanley. BUT (again) who thinks like that. If you get most pleasure from using special tools, it the newer Stanley 7 that need to go. It is the boring one of the three. If it were me .... I'd keep them all - and yes I have too many planes!

Which ones the latest Andrew? The oldest? Or newest?

Well, if the two were given to you, you should also pass them on to someone deserving.

I do that with quite a few tools. But I also spend time on these tools to get them into working order and unfortunately I have to make a living too. And where I meet a younger person with passion I sometimes give them tools or timber if I feel it suits them. You are right in the right circumstances. So I agree with you.

Hi Jamie, why is Preston planes so expensive? I'd personally sell the early stanley.

I would say two or three things about Preston. Firstly they were great pattern makers and decorated their top quality tools. 2nd they were in the plane making business a good while before Stanley. And the 3rd reason.. If you compare, less play in components, slightly thicker irons. Better balance and then there's the Paul Sellers thing. He had a few Preston routers and it pushed the prices up. Just like his use of Sorby (Bailey type) Preston were the Best of British plane making.

Keep the Preston, (I've actually never heard of it before) Part with the Stanley, it looks no different than my 1970s version.

Good call. Preston were Birmingham makers who were bought out to eventually become Record. So all those Record planes have lineage going back to Preston Birmingham. The No17 is a unicorn plane.

@@twcmakerI've only seen two Preston 17s in the wild one that was absolutely immaculate and one in fair condition like yours and a no18 that was boxed in perfect condition which sold for £550 Forgot to add the earlier Stanley was a newer blade , wasn't the original which was in it .
