How do you set control curves? Why should you use them?

Oh my god, thank you. I can actually slow down for landing now.

Extremely helpful. I've got a tiny little thumbstick on my gamepad and was struggling to get things feeling right. This has already been a huge improvement for me, not just for landing, but also more control in combat and lowflying

Glad it was helpful. I started playing with curves because of the little analog stick on my throttle that I use for strafing up/down, left/right. Wasn't very good for fine control till I'd spent some time playing with the control curves, but works much better after some tweaking.

Thanks, just what I was looking for.

This is great but keep in mind that for any PvP, having a higher curve on (especially) up/down strafe will have you more of a sitting duck.

Would it though? 100% stick deflection is still 100% control input so you should be able to strafe just as fast. This just gives you more precision for small control movements. That might not be an issue if you're using a full size stick for strafing, but I'm using a tiny controller size stick with my middle finger on my throttle so small strafe motions to thread between obstacles or lightly touch down when landing can be tricky. That's the main use for curves; small sticks or flying with a game controller.

Which one is the throttle and how can you tell what number your HOTAS is?
@the_omg3242
@the_omg3242 Год назад
That part is admittedly a pain in the ass ato figure out. On my setup (T16000) the throttle is hotas 2 in the options. (the stick is hotas 1) If you use a different stick and throttle and see multiple entries in Star Citizen, the easiest way to figure out which is which is to go to the invert settings and try and invert your pitch. You start by inverting it for hotas 1 then see if it changed while flying. If not, put the setting back in hotas 1 and try the same thing with hotas 2 and see if that inverts your pitch. If it does, then you know your joystick is hotas 2. Once you know which your joystick is, if there's only hotas 1 or 2, the throttle should be the other. If there's 3 hotas entries, then do the same thing to try and invert your throttle axis. (or do that to confirm which your throttle is. Once you know which entry is for the stick, which is the throttle, and which is the pedals, you start to set your control curves to tune them for better operation. You should make a point of taking off and getting some altitude before starting your tuning so you can immediately test settings till you're happy with everything. Hopefully in an armistice zone.

In the advanced keybindings, you look at what input is mapped to the input you want to change. For example, if i wanted to change the curve on strafe up/down, i would go into advanced keybindings > flight movement > strafe up / down. Then i would see what input is mapped, and change the curve on that input. I would definitely not recommend a curve on pitch/yaw. Roll and strafes is fine though.

@@etogreen Actually I would advise doing pitch and yaw. If you're trying to line up a shot you need precision with small adjustments that you can get by playing with the curves and if you need full control deflection to come around for another pass then full movements of the controls still give you that. You just get more precision when you move your control little bits without overshooting. But of course personal preference is key. The idea is to play with it till you find something that works well for you. That's why I'd recommend doing this in space where you can immediately test your settings till you're happy with everything.

@@the_omg3242 I’m glad you brought that up, so i can point out why myself, and experts would disagree. And that using a curve on your pitch and yaw is never good, unless all you do is joust at high speeds, in which case you have zero fundamentals. The curve increases your sticks precision as it approaches zero. Beyond 50 percent it becomes less accurate. When you are dogfighting you are pitching and yawing at varying degrees. In a close range turning fight you will be pitching and yawing well beyond 50 percent stock deflection. Not only will your aim be less precise with a curve in this situation, but you can’t build proper muscle memory because the amount you need to move your stick to adjust your aim is always changing depending on how far it’s deflected. More precision comes with using your strafes to assist your aim, and practice. Also decent quality sticks make a difference. Hope that helps.

@@etogreen Whether the experts agree with me or not, it is as I said a matter of personal preference. If I'm trying to fly at high speed and low altitude, strafe a ground target, (more often in DCS) thead my ship between a couple of buildings, or place my prograde marker on the center of a pad for a decoupled landing, I'd rather have the control precision at small deflections. Other people may prefer linear control, but non-linear is my preference.
