Peppy's sacrifice scene hits me to this day. Even after finding out that he survives it, it's a scene so awesome that it makes grown men cry about a cartoon rabbit.
I feel it could’ve made the story that much better if Pepper and Peppy had actually died. Would’ve made it that much more tragic and desperate and make the final fight and defeat of the aparoids that much more satisfying. They definitely didn’t hesitate to kill off pigma, so might as well have gotten a couple other significant figures right? I kinda expected Wolf to die as well, but it was also at the same time reasonable for him to get away with the rest of his team as well, but there might have been a little bit of a missed opportunity by not pulling the plug on Pepper and Peppy. Would be like the closing off of a chapter I guess and entering into a new era for new stories. The story of Andross and his forces being defeated has concluded, and so the aparoids could have been a good transition point, because they would be defeated at the cost of the characters of that previous era, so it all would come full circle that much more and open the way for new characters to replace them all and open up new stories. Just my thoughts anyway.
Soul Alpha reporting for duty, Peppy doesn't die, he just goes to the afterlife to regroup. Peppy was truly a black ops dude his age just shows how fit he was
25:23 If you look closely Fox and Krystal's ears twitch at the noise Tricky makes just before they turn around. Attention to detail. Slowing down the video helps
It'll be really really cool if this game was remastered in HD...and have some online multiplayer...up to 16 player match...and new modes. it'll be a hit
Lowkey think this is still the best OST Nintendo ever produced. Sweeping score, strong percussion, and that synthy undertone - beautiful stuff even all these years later.
I love the Aparoids concept: they are so otherworldly, menacing and mysterious, totally different from the usual goofy, cartoonish character design of the series. A breath of fresh air, compared to the Andross storyline retelling Nintendo constantly brings up on every other game.
In reality, those things are scary. They can parasite machines and people... even planets, like they homeworld. Just put yourself in Pigma or Pepper's shoes.
@@NoctiTheBiologist theyre alot more menacing than the Flood from Halo since they can infect things that arent organic and transform them. Imagine if SF Assault was a high budget game.
@@upy0ur5 funny that you mentioned the Flood from Halo, I personally think that the Aparoids are Star Fox's version of the Flood from Halo as they both infect both living organic life forms and machines and uses them to it's advantage and spread further, only differently. Whether the Aparoids return or not is up in the air, despite knowing the Aparoids got destroyed along with their homeworld.
The Aparoids are actually a homage to the insect-like enemies from Galaxian and Galaga. Since Namco was the company that created the game, it’s kind of a crossover of starfox vs those type of enemies.
1:17 The Opening cutscene will always be my all time favorite in the Star Fox games. The Cornerian Fleet actually being competent in battle compared to their lackluster performance in Sector Y, as well as it being a full scale fleet battle instead of Star Fox's single squadron vs Andross' armada. Even down to the coms signalling. The high tech chirping of Corneria's fleet vs the fax machine sound of Oikonny's
Jesus, the Aparoid Queen legit should be in any top Nintendo villains lists; she's legit on Gygas and dark matter levels of creepiness, also a literal universe level threat. God I love this game.
The transformation and assimilation of Pigma disturbed the hell out of me. Seeing him fused to this satellite, partially skeletal in the vacuum of space made it real and serious for me. I can remember being progressively more afraid and disturbed the closer I got to the center of the Aparoid home world. The Queen still scares me and can spook me at night when there's no lights, you're headed to bed, etc, you know what I'm talking about.
64 and Adventures were better. This game overhypes anything. "We're so cool we're wearing brightly colored spacesuits like we're hip young superheroes" Plus this game was TOO Japanese. It had too much of an anime influence on it. 64 may have had some Gundam inspired stuff in it, but it was actually cool and not overdone. 64 had influence from a variety of space movies and shows like Star Wars, Star Trek, etc. I mean for christsakes, the Arwing stuff in Adventures was cooler than this shit. The only thing good about this game is Krystal's sexy blue spacesuit and SOME of the music(like Wolf's theme)
Ron Johnson dude... stop reposting. This game doesn't overhype anything, and the fact you have to compare 64 to gundam actually degrades the game. The game itself can't be compared. It's great in its own way. I love 64 but this assault actually tops it. If they remade this series or the switch, or continued the story, it'd be so much better.
This game was great. I get it, starfox is normally in Arwing, but this feels RIGHT. The starfox team obviously has ground missions too, it wouldn't make sense to never see that. The story was much better than the generic "stop andross". Seeing Saria ravaged, Corneria obliterated, and having to seemingly kill pepper... the stakes in this game felt much higher. By the end of the game, you can really see the effects of the war. It doesn't just feel like starfox only fighting. The moment with wolf, wolfs sacrifice, the diverse missions (Ground/tank/plane/wing riding) and the fact they brought back tricky was nice too. The voice acting is okay, the dialogue is iffy. Not the worst dialogue ever, but a lot of it isn't needed. The music is top-notch too. Assault had the best Starwolf music hands down until Zero added a damn choir to it. It's not the best starfox game, but it easily has the best story and it FEELS like how it should be. If you're going from the game's story, not the fact that previous games were arwing/land master only, this game feels like a good balance of grounded and aerial fighting.
@@Jenninja17 This seems to be the Mario 2 and Zelda 2 of the 2000's. A sequel that is a bit too different from fan's love of the previous title that got a rather mixed response on arrival but sold fine.
I know right? This game had such an awesome look to it. And the concept behind the gameplay was amazing for the time. Imagine if they tried making a game just like this, but with today's standards?
This is my favourite Star Fox game because it's different from the other ones and so much more happens. Plus, the Aparoids were more menacing then Andross.
A short game but greatly story based with a good plot, great looking designs for the ships and characters, and great orchestrated music of favourite tunes of gamers past. Still gets my vote and support, always. The ARWINGS in this title still look both deadly and beautiful for me.
I'll never get tired of this game and it's story. For how short of time they had to make it, it's all so professionally done. That voice acting still blows me away.
48:10 Falco: Fox, tell me it ain’t so buddy... You knew about this? Slippy: So that’s why you were so calm! You sneaky dog! Fox actually didn’t know that they survived. This speaks to Fox’s ability as a leader. While thinking his comrade died, he was still able to make the quick decision to pursue the aparoid queen before the shield came back up. He wasn’t going to let Peppy’s sacrifice in vain. It takes an amazing leader to make decision on the fly like that while still sound cool and calm to his team mates. Fox defines what a leader should be.
StarFox really needs to try an Elite style open-space game some time I really appreciate how Namco not only established Krystal as a new full-time character (maybe Nintendo was the one who wanted it), but even brought back Sauria/Dinosaur Planet and Tricky. Acknowledging past one-off characters and events like that is always a welcome sight, when you have something like modern Mario games often ignoring many past games/characters in any shape or form.

Adventures had way better expressions. Assault only makes use of that kind of motion for CGI cutscenes and mission briefings, so everyone looks stiff outside of them (as they only open their mouths and blink during gameplay portions).
Even though Star Fox 64 was one of my all time favorites, Assault tops it easy. You get a badass story, and an even better multiplayer. Some say that the third-person shooting segments shouldn't have been in the game, but I disagree. It was like a great blend of 64 and Adventure. Many times while in muiltiplayer a buddy and I would destroy our enemies by having myself ride on his wing with a homing rocket. Star Fox Assault is a great game, and I really hope that the Nintendo Switch gets the entire library for the Gamecube. That would make me buy it instantly.
"We can't fly our Arwings in this weather." I call bull. You flew those bastards fifty feet above the surface of the SUN in 64. That's an excuse for more ground combat.
@@antoniobrice And the strong winds are a very big problem, because any fliying ship, no matter if is in space or anything, can't stand a strong air current, because if any flies into that strong air, he will doesn't get alive so easily because it will get no stable and the ship will be like out of control
I played this just last week. It took me 6hrs on silver difficulty, and now I know it was about 85% playtime vs the hours and hours of playtime of some other games. And I knew where I was going and what to do. That's value.
Underrated gem of a game. This franchise could be so much more. I love it, and I love Command as well.. they should keep going with the lore, maybe remaster it all with a 《Zero》 remaster like they did with 64, but giving up those gimmicks
Probably the biggest highlight of this is the fact that Wolf got a bit of development for his character and the fact that he's now become an independent crimelord whose trying to break away from his time working for Andross. The fact that he went out of his way to save his rival, even if he did threaten him in the process, shows that there's at least some compassion in him. Oh, how I wish they would expand more on the Star Wolf team, particularly the trio (Wolf, Leon and Panther) and continue the anti-hero sides of their characters.
AuraChannelerChris Honestly, words cannot describe how much I LOATHE how Wolf was treated in StarLink. A galactic conqueror who wants to take over Corneria? Miss me with that bullshit. This is not Wolf, this is Andrew or even Pigma. Wolf being forced into the "big, bad villain" role is something I never want to see because Wolf works better as an antagonistic, but moral crimelord doing his own thing, not being reverted right back to Square One, but worse. I really hope that if a new Star Fox game is made, Wolf is given better treatment and hopefully his personality from Assault is expanded upon.
AuraChannelerChris Still, Ubisoft has a lot to make up for if they're gonna make another SF game. Not just with Wolf, but making a Star Fox game that doesn’t have the SF characters thrown in as a gimmick. Nintendo has been sitting on this series for far too long now and they should really consider making a new game that isn't another 64 rehash.
yeah it's a good thing star fox and star wolf got rid of the queen and it's better to coexist sorta like fox and wolf i think both of them have a great brotherly rivalry even though they're completely different kind of canines
@@john34261 its just a matter of respect and skill beetween those 2, fox wont kill wolf as wolf never seems to want to kill fox, while fox seems like hes serious against wolf, it always seems hes having fun against him. They both seem to just want someone who can give them a true challenge, not holding back.
@@eduardojara6955 so you're saying both of them want to challenge eachother to see who's the best pilot while not holding anything back except killing eachother?
Whilst the Gameplay of Assault always went under fire, everyone seems to overlook the work they put into the story, whilst it's not the best story it's certainly much more compelling and interesting then starfox 64's. As much as Starfox 64 had better game play due to the focus being on ship combat as opposed to assault which had too much gameplay centered around ground combat I think assault did much better with story and characters and I am honestly very disappointing that Star Fox Zero is dropping the storyline.
Medachod I liked Command. Command's storyline is a brilliant way to end a storyline. It has a whole bunch of different endings, giving players choices on how they want the storyline to end.
This is the very first game that ever made me cry. I remember fighting Pepper being hard, but he survived. When Peppy sacrificed himself after saving Pepper, that made me cry. Made that final tunnel run so much scarier, and the Aparoid queen still scares the crap out of me. I cried again when I saw they'd all survived.
I would like to be extremely honest here. I liked this Star Fox game out of all of the other in the series. Hell, it's way better than Zero in my opinion.
Roberto Rodriguez I thought it was more a tribute to the Nintendo president that died and really just to test the waters on how they could develop later games rather than a full on reboot and restart of the series for a new time line anyway. As far as I’ve read and seen, it’s just expanding more on 64 rather than completely trashing and overhauling everything. I pray that’s the case because if it is a complete restart, God I will NOT be happy. It would be sad too because since the game wasn’t received all that greatly, it could cause the same fate as to what happened with Metroid. A real major drought where maybe a spin-off or two may appear but nothing mainstream. (Star Fox Racing game rumor... I’m looking at you...) And especially with Star Fox Command previously being deemed as not cannon as of right now (thank god)... the story we have right now is still really on a cliff hanger. So hopefully Zero is just an equivalent of say Zero Mission and Samus returns, which instead was meant to expand and improve the original story rather than completely restart the whole thing, and hopefully eventually there will be an actual canonically sequel to assault.
This game is the spirit of StarFox, everything was so well done in this game, it's a shame it was never brought into the new generations. Sorry, but I'll take this over StarFox Zero anyday
this was my first game to play on my gamecube when I was a Kid, my parents gave me the console and the game as a gift because it looked like a cute game with animals... Little did they know that it actually had a heavy story, dark scenes and some amazing emotional moments, I cried like a baby when Peppy "sacrificed" himself, I was so sad when he threw the Great Fox into the planet, I cried because I couldn't fight general Pepper and the Queen freaked me so much... Overall an Incredible game, truly a masterpiece, I wish they remake this game someday and follow this story with sequels, I love the art style and character personalities of this Star Fox
Such an amazing ending, just love how the queen imitates all the voices of the original star fox team. From General pepper, to pigma, peppy and even James McCloud. It almost feels like old star fox vs new star fox, it's so well done.
A serious leader. Outside of that facade, he's rather sexist, hot-blooded, and doesn't quite think things through when they will keep affecting him in the long term. It leads me to think his father was rather lousy in raising him right.
I don't think it was because of the way James raised Fox. Of course, there is no possible way to be a perfect parent of course, but let's not forget, Fox's dad died when Fox was still a teenager, a time in your life when your still going through puberty. Also, don't forget Fox also had a mother, who died when Fox was still a kid, leaving James a single father. Anyways, Fox was an only child that went through so many years without his mother and father in his life, and the only thing that kept him going in life was his goal to avenge his father by killing Andross, who was responsible for all of Fox's pain. Sure, he had Peppy to look after him but it probably wasn't the same for Fox (and I bet that might be the reason Peppy keeps bringing up the memory of James to Fox and being all "what would your father think?" If he did something wrong.) Anyways, I think much of Fox's personality stems from all the losses he's had in his life. This pretty much also applies to how he treats Krystal in the later games. I don't think he was being sexist, he was just simply worried he would lose Krystal like he lost his father, which is understandable in a way especially since Krystal doesn't seem to have as much piloting experience as the rest of the Star Fox team. Fox, meanwhile, is not sexist. He certainly didn't display any sexism whenever Katt would help them out during the Lylat Wars, I know that for a fact. Though I do agree in the fact that Fox has flaws. From what I see of him, he tends to get cocky, and trigger happy, and seems to always be concerned about how much he's being paid for doing his job. He also seems rather overprotective of Krystal in a way, and I don't blame him, though I wouldn't be surprised if his son Marcus ever got annoyed at him for this, if Fox and Krystal were to get married of course. (P.S. Sorry for the overly long explanation. I get carried away sometimes. Lol)
He's sexist, except the way he shows that is by saying the wroooooooong things to Krystal of all people. She's a much better pilot than Slippy, for one, and many can attest to that. Command shows that his worry for Krystal is a biiiiiiiiiiiit too much. I may be wrong on the hot-blooded part, but it's implied this happens between him and Falco. The comics expand on that.
Man I love these characters so damn much! My favorite franchise ever! I cant wait for another StarFox ! I loved Starfox Zero besides the co trols and i hope Starlink will be a great game
Assault Slippy: We can’t fly our Arwings in this weather! 64 Slippy: This baby could take temperatures up to 9000 degrees! If they could take temperatures up to 9000 degrees, how can’t they fly in cold weather?
I love how Tricky calls Fox out for his relationship with Krystal. Even someone as “dumb” as a dinosaur knows that Fox and Krystal like each other! I also like how Fox and Wolf put each other’s differences aside to take down the Aparoids. It just goes to show that even sworn rivals can get along with each other. I mean, just take a look at Kirby and Dedede.
"I love how Tricky calls Fox out for his relationship with Krystal. Even someone as “dumb” as a dinosaur knows that Fox and Krystal like each other!" Admittedly he was far more diplomatic than how I would have done it: "Would y'all just shut your faces, quit yapping, and fuck already!?"
I really wish Zero was a sequel to Assault storywise. Zero being another remake of 64 made all my excitment fly out the window. But at least we're getting another game.Edit: considering that Zero was a failure in terms of sales. that really isn't saying much. don't get me wrong there are good things about Zero. but... why did it have to be a reimagining of 64? we're probably not going to see another Star Fox game for a very long time because of it. if there is going to be another one on the Switch, please don't be another remake/reimagining. Assault 2 is probably the only way that Star Fox will be able to survive these days.
+Jeremy Knight Unfortunately, it seems they really don't want to continue the stuff that happened in Adventures. And somehow, I think they just want to make people forget about this series.
+AuraChannelerChris who knows, they could be just testing the waters with Zero. If that does well, then they could make another game with Krystal and Panther coming back. last time I checked, Zero wasn't a reboot of the cannon, just a retelling of 64. plus it doesn't seem like they want people to forget about Adventures and Assault since there's trophies of both Krystal and Panther in Smash 4. but at the same time, it does feel like Nintendo acts like those games never happend due to 64 being so popular, while the games after that either were overshadowed for trying something diffrent or just being OK.
+Jeremy Knight Actually from what I've heard Zero isn't a remake/reboot but rather a direct sequel to 64, meaning it takes place after 64 and before Adventures, but given that's just a rumor I'm taking it with a grain of salt.
+Jeremy Knight I think the fact that Adventures and Assault had 3rd party co-developers might also be a factor why they're not promoting those as much as they used to. Why I'm not sure but I think it might be a factor nonetheless.
+ilikethecokev2 It's probably because Adventures and Assault are generally OK games, nothing to really write home about other than the story and new characters like Krystal and Panther. while they didn't add much, their at least likeable.
Okay, I'm confused. How come when this game does the radio communication and the duo head cutscenes, it doesn't bother me, but when Sonic Forces does it, I'm annoyed? =/
I guess because for one its a staple of both Star Fox and the Sci-fi genre and because all the dialog is important be it because it comes from others on the Battle field with you or from Characters that give important information to enemies, mission goals and story while all coming off as very professional.
Well because the characters in in Sonic Forces arent taking the situation very seriously like at all as they all make jokes about thier kind dying. Now Fox and his team take the Aparoids very seriously as they almost never joke around about it. To SF it just feels like another day to them with Eggman being an idiot as usual
Same thing with this game and sonic 06 but with motion capture. The motion capture in this game was tolerable but for some reason the motion capture in sonic 06 felt very off. My best guess is because the design of Sonic characters are way more exaggerated than Star Fox characters.
The plot may be a bit basic and the gameplay subjective, I've really grown to appreciate the character interaction reflecting their growth in the series. They really managed to play off of each other in a way that feels pretty natural. For the most part, at least. I think one of the more subtle moments is Peppy warning Fox not to get too trigger happy on the shield generators on Fichina, followed by the latter's almost immediate response. Very telling for how long they've worked together.
34:00 this whole cutscene is super satisfying! Finally you can face the enemy head on, after 8 missions with so much interruption to the goal. It was also here it dawned on me the serioussnes of the situation
The sound design in this game is incredible, and if the in-game voices matched how they sounded in the CGI cutscenes (instead of the strange tinny compression that is applied to them), then it would be one of the most impressive sounding Nintendo games to date, let alone video games in general.
This was actually the first Star Fox game I've ever played, AND I LOVED IT SO DAMN MUCH!!. At the time I owned a Gamecube and I wanted to get a Nintendo 64 and get Star Fox 64 but I didn't have enough money.
I'm guessing the Queen got James' data during that first encounter with Corneria 17 years ago, like Beltino said. The reason they survived the attack was likely because they called Star Fox, then led by James, for help
@@AuraChannelerChris Fox, Falco, wolf, and peppy are thr best. For me these are there definitive voices, more on wolf and Fox, Wolf sounds so Badass and Fox sounds mature, but still a little inexperienced
You know, thinking about it, this story is insanely fucked up. -A race of Borg-like beings can parasitically control technology and organic life and fuse the two together. -After assimilation, it takes all their memories and melds with the queen. -Dinosaur Planet gets fucked, Corneria almost gets entirely overrun. -General Pepper literally asks you to kill him, looking like Captain Keyes towards the end of Halo. -Hundreds, if not thousands, of Cornerian troops die in the invasion of the Aparoid homeworld, Including the destruction of the Great Fox, your home for every game. -The game makes you think Pepper, ROB, and Star Wolf also die in the invasion. Star Fox: Assault is probably the darkest the series could go before going into Metroid territory, but even those games don't have your boss horribly mutated asking you to kill him.
This game was so fckin good when I was young. So many memories playing multiplayer with my little cousins crowded around a small box TV. Star fox adventures was amazing as well
Man, I remember playing this game on release and watching the first cutscene where they take off in the Arwings. I was so excited! This, F-Zero GX and SSBM were part of my daily entertainment back then... the Gamecube era was magical for me.
"I'm sensing cries of agony!" Palutena: And I thought telepathy was my style. Pit: What would you expect from people, lady Palutena? Dark Pit: Well, at least there's other people out there with the same ability.
Now, if Nintendo could make a Star Fox game with the multiple paths single player mode of 64, but with the multiplayer design of Assault (with all the remaining kinks worked out, like how exiting your ship would instantly despawn any pursuing Predator rockets; that was such a _stupid_ exploit), that would be about as close to a 'perfect' Star Fox game as we could ever get. That's just what I think, anyway...
There’s some hope, Wolf got back in Smash, Krystal is an assist trophy in Smash, and they added Star Fox DLC to Starlink, so they may make a game like assault in the future. Hopefully!
10:30 I remember that there was an alternate cutscene in this level I managed to find, but I have no idea how It was not big, just a small difference, maybe just slightly different dialog, and it was not very hidden. It's basically something like "Kill all aparoids, don't leave any of them", could be something else. It would not be rewarding
So the queen absorbed James as he was flying around in space meaning James is still alive.....somewhere slippy said the queen is using information from things she's absorbed....mind blown yet?
I don't care what anyone says, but this is perhaps my favorite Star Fox game. Sure there's parts I hate, like those stupid turret parts, but overall, the game is really fun and the story is really great. Star Fox 64 was good too, but the storyline in Assault was just so much better.
I do like Wolfs rivalry with Fox actually. Wolf won't admit it but he likes Fox as an ally and a rival and he knows if he kills him then theirs no rivalry anymore. Hell Wolf just saved his life if that dosent tell us secret ally to Fox then I don't know what does honestly.
One of those special relationships where you respect your opponent so much that you grow to actually NEED them as a “frenemy” because otherwise you just lose your purpose really and life is no longer fun for you. So ironic. Your goal is to take down your opponent, but you know that if you kill them, then what do you do then? And then when it comes to a time to put aside your differences and fight for the common good, you wouldn’t really have that powerful counterpart to tag up with then. So basically you have to purposely not kill each other even though that’s your goal, and if it comes to it, even save each others’ lives and fight together instead. Lol
@@VulpseiusFox But see thats what I like about Wolf. He acts all tough but being around Fox and his team has softened him up. Its like u said they have a frenemy rivalry going on here.
